Duke Most Consistent in Crazy ACC

By Jim Henry 2/07/2010 8:15 PM ET

Gary Williams figured it would take 10 Atlantic Coast Conference games before a league favorite emerged.

Williams, part-time soothsayer and full-time head coach, and his Maryland Terrapins solidified their grip on second place in the ACC with Sunday's 92-71 home victory over toothless North Carolina. The Terps play host to fourth-place Virginia Wednesday before heading to first-place Duke Saturday.

Go ahead and count 'em: That will be 10 conference games for Maryland by week's end.

"Our team is interesting," Williams said following the UNC victory.

"We were just in the locker room with the players. [Winning] was a great feeling obviously, but we weren't getting carried away. We know what is ahead of us. We'll enjoy this and just go from there."

The ACC continues to be a jumbled, entertaining mess.

Jordan Williams TerpsThere is a lesson (or two, or more) to learn from Maryland's 92-71 dismantling of the program that, technically speaking, is the defending NCAA champion.

* Don't bet against the home team when a record-breaking blizzard hits town. As thoroughly as Georgetown handled Villanova the day before in Washington, Maryland handled North Carolina even easier Sunday afternoon -- and anecdotal evidence suggests that the D.C. suburbs, including the College Park area surrounding the on-campus Comcast Center, were in worse shape from the snowstorm than the city was.

* North Carolina resembles last year's national titlists less than it does the rock-bottom teams at the end of the Matt Doherty era.

* Every indication is that the post-championship malaise Maryland's program underwent, the one that got many loudly calling for Gary Williams' job, is over; the Terps are seriously in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship hunt.

* The unconscionable racism displayed at Florida State last week aside, it's not hard to understand why Maryland opponents would want Greivis Vasquez to go away.

Gary Williams SnowThe Terrapin men's basketball team returned to the Comcast Center on Friday afternoon, following a road win against Florida State. Gary Williams still hasn't left.

The Terps' coach slept in his office to avoid being snowed out of the arena for Sunday's game against North Carolina. Given the white doom that befell the Washington metro area, it was a smart choice.

So much snow fell that Maryland encouraged fans to stay home if they live beyond walking distance. The athletic department also eschewed the standard student ticket system, instead admitting any person with a valid student ID.

Greivis VasquezTALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Greivis Vasquez flashed a friendly grin. He knows Atlantic Coast Conference fans either love him or hate him.

Florida State's fans demonstrated their feelings Thursday night, booing Maryland's mercurial senior guard each time he touched the basketball in the Terrapins' 71-67 road victory. There were plenty of catcalls and name-calling, too, though Vasquez was quick to point out the home fans were wrong about an important fact.

"They were calling me Mexican when I am Venezuelan," Vasquez said.

This much is certain: Vasquez, who is known for his celebratory antics and tendency to focus too much on the crowd, displayed the maturity and resolve that Maryland will need as it soon enters the second half of the ACC season.

Vasquez had 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as Maryland overcame a late rally to win at FSU for the first time in five games.

With the victory the Terrapins (15-6, 5-2 ACC) moved into a tie for second-place in the ACC standings with Virginia, one-half game behind Duke. Five teams, including FSU (16-6, 4-4), are bunched together like five o'clock traffic, each two games behind the surging Blue Devils.

Parity Comes to Powerful ACC

By Jim Henry 1/26/2010 2:17 PM ET

Holy Schnikes! Are Atlantic Coast Conference head coaches having to defend their league?

It's not like Leonard Hamilton is preaching to the choir. Mike Krzyzewski either. Might as well include Gary Williams in the mix, too, though he believes there's still time for a team to distance itself from the others.

The ACC, long considered the country's premier men's basketball league, is much more balanced this season. Hamilton has gone as far as to say it's "new day in the ACC," believing the 12 teams are squeezed closer together in talent than ever before.

Jin Soo ChoiCOLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Jin Soo Choi, the first South Korean in Division I men's basketball, will leave the Maryland Terrapins to pursue a career in Korea, the school announced Tuesday.

"After speaking with my family, we decided it would be best to continue my basketball career in Korea," Choi said in a release sent by the Maryland athletics department . "I want to thank the coaches and especially Coach Williams for giving me an opportunity to play basketball at a high level."

That opportunity included sparse game action for Choi, who posted averages of 0.8 points and 1.1 rebounds in 4.9 minutes per game for the Terps. He has played in nine of the Terps' 13 games this season.

Towson Women School Maryland

By Milton Kent 12/11/2009 3:10 PM ET

Brenda Frese It was just a week ago that Maryland coach Brenda Frese pronounced she liked the direction her Terps were heading. They were coming off a 21-point win over Minnesota, a victory that propelled them into the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time this season.

Now, Frese is likely wondering what direction her team is headed next, after perhaps the most surprising loss in women's college basketball this year, a 67-55 setback to in-state rival Towson on Thursday.

The Terps, who had climbed to No. 18 in the coaches' poll and had snuck in at No.25 in the AP rankings, were stunned by a Tiger team that was picked to finish sixth in a preseason Colonial Athletic Association poll.

As the horn sounded, a throng of over 2,200 -- a Towson Center record crowd for women's basketball -- stormed the court, marking the first win for Towson over Maryland in 34 years.

Alexis RackTwo weeks ago, Pat Summitt surveyed the national scene and said this:

"A lot of people don't have Mississippi State on their radar screen and they should."

Never argue with Pat.

Mississippi State is climbing the rankings -- moving from No. 25 to No. 19 in this week's poll -- and the ladder of national recognition, particularly after Sunday's 84-55 win over No. 20 Maryland.

Granted, Maryland is remodeling after the graduation of Kristi Tolliver and Marisa Coleman and the transfer of Marah Strickland, and Brenda Frese's program will likely struggle with change most of the year, but the Bulldogs took it to the Terrapins on their home floor.

ACC referee Karl HessGREENSBORO, N.C. -- The talk of the Atlantic Coast Conference's basketball media day Sunday was the trouble a player could get into if he talked too much.

Or said the wrong thing, or gestured the wrong way, or celebrated excessively, or did anything else that might be considered "unsporting behavior,'' according to a new zero-tolerance policy approved for this season by the NCAA.

Many of the players and coaches gathered at Greensboro's Grandover Resort bluntly said they either did not like the change, didn't understand why it was necessary, or both. The biggest issue: there is too much room left for the wrong interpretation.

Gary WilliamsCOLLEGE PARK, Md. -- When he addressed the packed house at Comcast Center at Maryland's Midnight Madness festivities Friday night, Gary Williams said he didn't prepare his comments and spoke off the cuff. It wasn't hard to figure out where his inspiration came from.

"I'd like to thank all the fans who are here tonight, all across the country, who stayed with us last year,'' he said. "Last year was one of the great experiences I've ever had as a coach.''

Staying with the Terrapins in 2008-09 was a challenge, especially after a contentious midseason stretch that featured a surprise home loss to Morgan State, a 41-point humiliation at Duke, Williams' public feud with athletic department officials, and an impromptu appearance at a subsequent Williams press conference by athletic director Debbie Yow so she could give him a vote of confidence.
