NEW BRITAIN, Conn.(AP) Tristan Blackwood scored 17 points and Central Connecticut held off UMBC 58-54 on Tuesday.

David Simmons had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils (3-7).

Ray Barbosa led UMBC (7-3) with 16, and the Retrievers used a late 20-7 run to pull within one point of the Blue Devils at 53-52. But Blackwood hit three free throws with 1:45 left to give Central Connecticut a four-point lead.

Two free throws by Darryl Porter and a turnover by Blackwood gave the Retrievers one more chance with 34 seconds left. But Barbosa missed a shot inside and a tie-up gave Central the ball back with 19.4 to go.

One free throw each by Ken Horton and Simmons sealed the win.

Central jumped to an early 32-18 lead, making its first seven shots from the floor, while UMBC was 1-for-8 early.

A 3-pointer by Barbosa came at the end of the half, during a cold streak by the Devils, and cut the lead to 33-23 at halftime.
