BOZEMAN, Mont.(AP) Tyrone Shelley scored 19 points off the bench and Pepperdine held on to beat Texas Pan-American 86-84 Friday night.
Malcolm Thomas added 16 points and Jason Walberg 14 for the Waves (4-4), who trailed 40-39 at halftime before edging ahead over the final 20 minutes in the first round of the MSU GranTree Inn Classic.
Brian Burrell scored a game-high 23 points for Texas-Pan American (4-3). Zach Trader added 19 points and Paul Stoll had 13.
The teams were almost evenly matched. Pepperdine shot 34-of-59 from the field (57.6 percent) to 27-of-51 for Texas Pan-American (52.9 percent). But the Waves had a slight rebounding edge and forced the Broncs into 17 turnovers.
