Sports writers have an uphill battle in winning these types of awards, measured against other writers who take on slightly more serious topics like education and climate change and war, but here's the citation for commentary:

Jason Whitlock of The Kansas City (Mo.) Star receives $10,000 and a trophy for his ability to seamlessly integrate sports commentary with social commentary and to challenge widely held assumptions along the racial divide.

Specific columns of Whitlock's weren't cited, but there was one story, more than any other, that Whitlock used as a springboard to his current position as the go-to guy for people seeking opinions on the intersection of race and sports: Don Imus calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos." Whitlock ripped both Imus for what he said and those who bashed Imus without likewise bashing the common use of the term "ho" in popular culture.

"It's a tremendous honor," Whitlock said. "I'm really humbled. Mike Royko, my idol, received one of these awards in 1981. He started things off by slamming the podium and saying, "That's how I feel."

He then screamed, "I'm so damn sick and tired of getting out-rebounded!" Over the course of the press conference it's pretty amazing that he didn't break his hand, the podium or his glasses, which he took on and off with growing frustration. More from the press conference:

"Twenty-five offensive rebounds!?!"

"The first time we block out, we get called for a damn block out?! For pushing people?! Meanwhile, they're on the other end of the court, they're grabbing rebounds, going over the top and grabbin' them! We get one offensive rebound and then get called for over the back!"

"We either can't block out damn well or we're not getting calls, one or the other. That's why I'm frustrated. ... The entire thing came down to offensive rebounds.
"They got every ...

Slam went the podium again.

Here's a look:

The focal point of today's Outside the Lines was former Fresno State women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson-Klein, who says she was fired because she demanded equal treatment for the women's basketball program.

But Fresno State says that's not why she was fired. The school says it fired her for several reasons, the most serious of which is that she used her players to obtain prescription pain medication for her. Johnson-Klein admits to doing that, and in my book, that's an offense for which a coach deserves to get fired.

That's not the whole story, though. There's also former volleyball coach Lindy Vivas, who was awarded $5.85 million for a similar lawsuit. And there's the fact that the school agreed to pay $3.5 million to Diane Milutinovich, a former associate athletic director, to settle her lawsuit.

And there's the fact that most of what Johnson-Klein says about the way women within the Fresno State athletic department were treated as second-class citizens is completely believable. Overall, the hostility to females in the Fresno athletic department was absolutely disgraceful, which is why the women who have taken the school on are three-for-three in winning.

The whole Outside the Lines piece is worth a look. Fresno State alumni and fans -- and the taxpayers who are ultimately on the hook for these multimillion-dollar payouts -- should be outraged.
Stacy Johnson-Klein Deserved to Get Fired, but Fresno State Athletics Still a Disgrace originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sun, 24 Feb 2008 12:45:00 EST . On Thursday night the Wildcats traveled to Oregon State with just six players available to play. The rest of their players sat out due to academics, injuries or "personal reasons." And as if having only six players available wasn't bad enough, the Wildcats got into foul trouble. Serious foul trouble. Such serious foul trouble that by the time the game got to double overtime, four players had fouled out, and Arizona finished the game with just two players on the floor. I haven't been able to locate video of the game, but here's Oregon State's coach talking about it afterward:

"I've just never seen a game like that either on television, in person or from the sideline in all my years of coaching," Oregon State head coach LaVonda Wagner said.

Added an Oregon State player of the way Arizona kept fighting despite a three-player disadvantage, "They deserved it more than us." That may be true, but the Wildcats lost, 94-88 in double overtime.

Via Deadspin.
Academics, Injuries, Fouls Force Arizona Women's Hoops Team to Play 5-on-2 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 04 Jan 2008 16:42:00 EST . Today Imus was back on the air, promising to change.

Imus now has two black cast members, and he said the two of them will join him in discussions of race relations on the air. And Imus said today, "I will never say anything in my lifetime that will make any of these young women at Rutgers regret or feel foolish that they accepted my apology and forgave me."

The problem is, comments like "nappy-headed hos" didn't come from nowhere. Those comments were integral to the Imus show and the Imus shtick. Maybe he can persuade the audience that liked his old show to also listen to his new show, minus the racial and sexual humor. I have my doubts.

In the meantime, I hope he invites the Rutgers women's basketball team to come on the show, and I hope they accept. That would make for some good radio.
Don Imus Is Back, Vows He 'Will Never Say Anything' Like 'Nappy-Headed Hos' originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Mon, 03 Dec 2007 14:02:00 EST . But since that infamous incident, she's become not just a basketball coach but also the go-to source for many in the media who want an opinion on the intersection of race, sex and sports.

ESPN's Doris Burke asked Stringer what she thought of Knicks coach Isiah Thomas saying that he isn't bothered as much by a black man calling a black woman a "bitch" as he is by a white man calling a black woman a "bitch," and Stringer expressed her views:

"It's disgusting. You know, I turned the dog-gone set off. I thought 'has he lost his mind,' honestly," Stringer told ESPN

Thomas responded by telling Stringer to "get the facts'' about what he said, but I'm not sure what leads him to believe that she doesn't have the facts. Thomas says it's always wrong for a man to call a woman a "bitch," but that if a man is going to call a black woman a "bitch," Thomas would prefer that it be a black man. Stringer disagrees -- she doesn't want to be called a "bitch" by anyone and wouldn't feel any better about being called a "bitch" by a black man than she would about being called a "bitch" by a white man.

That's an opinion she's entitled to, it's consistent with the things she said after the Imus incident, and it's absurd for Thomas to suggest that just because she disagrees with him, she needs to "get the facts."

UPDATE: Stringer has now apologized to Thomas.
Rutgers Coach Vivian Stringer Calls Isiah Thomas' Comments 'Disgusting' originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sat, 27 Oct 2007 15:59:00 EST . It has been the rivalry in women's college basketball for more than a decade.

And now it's over. UConn says Tennessee is to blame; Tennessee hasn't explained itself.

"We are disappointed for UConn fans, Tennessee fans and women's basketball fans in general who look forward to this annual event featuring the greatest women's basketball rivalry in the nation, as recently selected by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association," UConn athletic director Jeff Hathaway said in a written statement.

This would be like USC deciding it didn't want to play Notre Dame in football anymore. The decision deprives fans of a great matchup every year, and it weakens the sport. Let's hope someone convinces these schools to come to their senses and come to an agreement.
UConn, Tennessee End Women's Basketball Rivalry originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 08 Jun 2007 19:11:00 EST . Kentucky's softball, swimming, and golf teams are the ones that put the school over the top. Alabama came in second and Florida third. At the bottom of the list were Mississippi State in 11th place and Ole Miss in 12th.

Ashley Judd really has nothing to do with this story, other than, you know, she's hot and she's a Kentucky graduate. According to the report, some schools have written policies saying any student-athlete who becomes pregnant will lose her athletic scholarship, and that many athletes have abortions because they don't want to lose their scholarships.

At Clemson, seven athletes told ESPN they had abortions. There are apparently no firm rules governing how colleges or the NCAA deal with pregnant athletes, but many athletes say it's clear to them that if they want to continue to have a scholarship, they can't miss playing time because of a pregnancy. Syracuse forward Fantasia Goodwin played last season while she was seven months pregnant and hid that fact from the team.

The most surprising part of all this is that most schools seem to have given no thought at all to what to do when a scholarship athlete gets pregnant. I'm not sure I have the right answer for how schools should deal with this, but simply pretending it's an issue that doesn't exist isn't a wise policy.
Some Athletes Choose Abortion Over Losing a Scholarship originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sun, 13 May 2007 12:03:00 EST . And Garbus will argue that CBS owes Imus the $40 million remaining on his contract because the contract specifically urges him to be controversial and irreverent.

The contract also "stipulates that Imus be given a warning before being fired," a warning he apparently never received despite a long history of making jokes that poked fun at people based on their race, sex, religion or sexual orientation.

No matter the outcome of this case, there's no question that Imus's employers supported for years the same types of comments that led to his firing.
Don Imus Contract Encouraged Controversial Comments originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 03 May 2007 18:42:00 EST . But that didn't stop Syracuse forward Fantasia Goodwin. Goodwin had a baby last week, just two months after scoring 14 points in a basketball game.

"I had a baby Thursday evening at 7:34," Goodwin said. "She's healthy, I'm healthy. We're both doing great. I plan on returning back to Syracuse in the fall to continue my senior year and play basketball for Syracuse University. I will be taking online classes this summer, and in August she's going to be with family while I attend school."

When Goodwin finally told her coaches that she was pregnant, they made her sit out, but that came with just one game left in the season. There are apparently no rules about such things as whether or not a pregnant woman can compete in NCAA sports. And there are apparently no rules about whether a player can lose her scholarship if she has to miss playing time because she's pregnant.

If you're interested in the intersection of pregnancy and basketball, I highly recommend the documentary The Heart of the Game.
Syracuse Forward Played While Pregnant originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 26 Apr 2007 16:36:00 EST . But there were two big winners: Jason Whitlock (as we've noted before) and Rutgers coach Vivian Stringer. The latest example of Stringer's good fortune? She just received a raise from Rutgers that will pay her $450,000 a year, with incentives that could double that figure.

I don't want to suggest that Imus is the sole -- or even the main -- reason for this, as it's not uncommon for coaches who take their teams to the championship game to be handsomely rewarded. But make no mistake: Now that she's a household name, she's in a much better negotiating position than she would have been if Imus had kept his mouth shut.

It should be noted, however, that although the AP story about the raise says in the first sentence that Stringer's new contract "will pay her the same base salary as Scarlet Knights football coach Greg Schiano," that's misleading. The base salary is only one component of a college coach's compensation. Coaches have all kinds of side deals with local TV stations, shoe companies and summer camps. Schiano will still make significantly more money than Stringer.
Rutgers Coach Vivian Stringer Gets a Raise originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 08:27:00 EST . Apparently Whitlock didn't want to have to live the morning radio lifestyle (4 a.m. wakeup calls), and he didn't want to leave Kansas City for New York. However, the Newsday report says he has declined the job "for now," suggesting that it's still possible that he could take it.

Hat tip: Sports by Brooks.
Jason Whitlock Declines Offer for Don Imus Slot originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 18:11:00 EST . Jason Whitlock?

Newsday reports that it's possible.

Jason Whitlock, a columnist for aol.com and The Kansas City Star, said Friday that WFAN operations director Mark Chernoff interviewed him Wednesday about the open morning slot on the station.

Whitlock is believed to be one of a number of people whom Chernoff has talked to or will talk to about the slot vacated by the fired Don Imus, but he is the first whose name has become public.

I don't know if taking Imus's radio show would require Whitlock to leave his current gigs, but if so, I hope he'd turn it down. Whitlock is fine as a radio and TV guy, but he's at his best as a columnist.

Previously at FanHouse:
Rosie O'Donnell: I Want to Marry Jason Whitlock
Jason Whitlock to Talk Don Imus on Oprah
Jason Whitlock: Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton Are 'Terrorists'
Snoop Dogg: Don't Compare Me to Don Imus
Stuart Scott on 'Ho': 'I Didn't Say That It's a Good Thing'
Stuart Scott Says Calling a Woman a Ho Is 'Affectionate'
Jason Whitlock Could Replace Don Imus originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sat, 21 Apr 2007 15:12:00 EST .
