On a night when Kevin Durant had 30 and 16, and Texas won a classic ... the fact that Acie Law's name is even being brought is up is a testament to how special a player he is. The things he did at the end of regulation and the first overtime were the stuff of legend. I don't mean to short Durant, he deserves every accolade he's getting, but ... Law has a chance to be a special player, too. Stat of the night: Three of Texas's starting five (James, Augustin, and Durant) had 22 or more points.

Maryland 85, (14) Duke 77. The fact that Duke was ranked 14th and Maryland was unranked seems a bit ridiculous now, doesn't it? Maryland went into Cameron and put away the Blue Devils, getting 25 from Mike Jones in the process. If Maryland keeps their confidence up, and keeps things rolling ... they're going to make some high-seeded tournaments team's draw much rougher than it should be.

Texas Tech 85, Baylor 74. I've gotta think that Texas Tech's tournament resume is looking pretty good. Not that a win over Baylor is anything special (a win they had to struggle to get), but they're over .500 in a very tough conference, and they've got three wins against top ten teams. That should do it, right?

Penn State 74, Iowa 72. Meanwhile, Iowa's bubble wasn't just popped ... it was obliterated with the force of a thousand sledgehammers. Penn State ... really, Penn State? You want the world to believe you're a tournament team, and you're losing to Penn State? I'm chuckling right now. I am audibly chuckling at the Iowa Hawkeyes.

UMass 102, La Salle 63. UMass pushes their record to 22-7, violating LaSalle and strengthening their cause for a tournament bid. I have a nagging feeling that the relative lack of strength in the A-10 is going to be held against them ... I'd still recommend winning the tournament.
The Peach Basket Brief: 03.01.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 08:50:00 EST . You'd have expected a little more from the Gators after their coach outright accused them of not caring about winning their last game ... of course, I suppose it's hard to compete with any team that's getting a pregame peptalk from Peyton Manning and a cheerleading performance from Pat Summitt. By the way, I guess I have to be the one to say it, so fine ... for a 55-year-old woman, Pat Summitt's got a decent pair of legs. Chris Lofton led Tennessee with 21.

Pitt 80, (12) West Virginia 66. That could just about finish off West Virginia's tournament hopes. Now, they're going to probably need a couple of wins in the Big East tournament to get in, because lately, they've been in strugglesville. WVU can point to their poor shooting if they want to, but they gave up 51 points to Pitt in the second half. It takes their best defensive effort to keep Pitt from lighting it up. In the first half, they gave that. In the second half, they didn't.

Brigham Young 62, (20) Air Force 58. Air Force is another team bottoming out at the wrong time. The loss to BYU is their third straight, it ends their 30-game home winning streak, leaving BYU as the team with the nation's longest home winning streak ... at 30 games. BYU now clinches the Mountain West title with a loss from UNLV in either of its last two games.

Winthrop 74, Charleston Southern 42. Winthrop advances with ease in the Big South Conference tournament quarterfinals. They're at the quarterfinals already? Well, yeah, but it doesn't take much work to get there in an 8-team conference. Winthrop could be a troublesome team in the tournament, too, with the right draw.

Oklahoma State 84, Kansas State 70. It was senior night in Stillwater ... might as well go out with a bang, eh, Mario Boggan? Boggan got ejected on his senior night after headbutting K-State forward Cartier Martin. Well done, Mario. Mom will be so proud.

Michigan 67, Michigan State 56. A contest between two Big Ten bubble teams try to convince the world that the Big Ten is not, in fact, a soft and overrated conference (it is) ... and Michigan gets the win at home behind 24 points from Dion Harris.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.28.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 28 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . Oklahoma led by fourteen at the half, before the Sooners stormed back to make it close ... I tend to think that the first twenty minutes of the game are more indicative of the real Jayhawks than the last twenty. They've been blowing everyone out recently. They jumped out to the lead against Oklahoma, and let their foot of the gas pedal a little bit. It happens.

Syracuse 72, (10) Georgetown. You've gotta give Jim Boeheim a ton of credit for what's happening at Syracuse. They started out the season looking like they'd be a Big East bottom feeder, and they're rolling along now like a well-oiled machine. They had to first play their way on to the bubble, and now they're off ... on the good side of it. They shot well and they defended all night long.

Texas-Pan American 70, New Jersey Institute of Technology 58. The official adopted team of the Peach Basket Brief continues to struggle. NJIT dropped a heartbreaker to fellow independent Texas Pan-American. Kraig Peters led the NJIT Highlanders with 15 in a losing effort, and Marc Milbourne Swan had 14.

Long Beach State 82, Pacific 76. Player on the night: Long Beach's Aaron Nixon, who set the stat sheet on fire with 32 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. The win gets Long Beach to 20 wins, with a two game lead for the conference title.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.27.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 27 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . If they weren't already in the tournament (and I'd think they'd have to be), this should seal the deal for Oregon. They came back from a massive first-half deficit, got it rolling in the second half, and Aaron Brooks put the Ducks ahead by three with 12.9 seconds left. Tajuan Porter had 21 big points for Oregon on just 9 shots.

Loyola-IL 75, (15) Butler 71. Rough one for the Bulldogs, who have actually lost three of their last five. Blake Schilb, who might be the best player in the Horizon League, torched Butler for 28 ... and the loss leaves them a half game behind Wright State in the conference standings. Speaking of which ...

Youngstown State 72, Wright State 57. The Penguins came out of nowhere to pull the Horizon League shocker on Wright State. Fortunately for the Raiders, Loyola-IL also took care of Butler, so they end up clinging to their conference lead. Youngstown State's Quin Humphrey led all scorers with 35.

Duke 71, Clemson 66. Very nice win for Duke, beating a tough opponent on the road at a crucial point in their season. They led most of the game -- by 21 at halftime -- and kept the lead around the 10-point mark for most of the second half. On the road in the ACC, it doesn't get a lot more impressive than that. Clemson, meanwhile, might be sliding off the bubble completely with a 5-8 conference record.

Hofstra 68, UNC-Wilmington 65. The sad-sack UNCW Seahawks almost jumped up and bit Hofstra. The Colonial Athletic Association bottom feeders went back and forth with Hofstra all night, but Antoine Agudio's 30 were enough to get the Pride the win.

(4) UCLA 85, Cal 75. One night, Lorenzo Mata is like a dunk Ben Wallace at the free-throw line. The next, he's like Chauncey Billups. Mata's at 30% on the season from the charity stripe, but hit 8 of 9 last night to boost UCLA to victory. The Bruins trailed most of the first half, but imposed their will in the second.

Kennesaw State 67, Mercer 51. I've been waiting all year for things to come together for Kennesaw State ... and finally, they have. The 12-18 Owls pimpslapped the Mercer Bears all night long. Ten players scored for Kennesaw State, and Ronell Wooten led them with 19.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.23.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 23 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . A win's a win, I suppose, but ... beating Penn State by single digits at home is a cry for help. I guess I should congratulate Penn State for their incredible ability to drag other teams down to their level. Jamar Butler had 18, and Greg Oden had 17 and 14.

Mississippi State 83, (21) Vanderbilt 70. Jamont Gordon combines a lot of things. As evidenced by his triple-double, he combines the ability to score, distribute and rebound. As evidenced by his first name, he combines "Jamaal" and "Lamont." It's all about things coming together, and last night, they did, as the Bulldogs pulled the upset.

(14) Southern Illinois 58, Indiana State 50. That was very nearly a disaster for the Salukis ... Indiana State's the worst team in the MVC, but they almost tripped up Southern Illinois. Their reputation remains intact, though, as they came back in the second half. 15 each for Tony Young and Jamaal Tatum.

Miami (FL) 68, (19) Virginia 60. This is not the kind of loss that you like to have when you're trying to boost your tournament seeding. Virginia lost to one of the ACC's worst last night. Hurricane Jack McClinton hit a couple of clutch threes down the stretch to get the win.

Xavier 98, Rhode Island 72. Pretty significant game in the Atlantic 10 last night between a couple of teams that would like to argue that the A-10 is better than a one-bid conference. Xavier ghetto-stomped Rhode Island, pushing their record to 20-7 overall, and 10-3 in the conference. Rhode Island is 17-11 (10-4).

UMass 83, St. Bonaventure 44. Sticking with the A-10 for a second, it was also home to last night's most savage beating. The Bonnies, as you might expect from a team named so unfortunately, are bad.

Virginia Tech 79, Boston College 62. Virginia Tech pussed their conference record to 9-4, getting back to within a game of UNC for the top spot. Zabian Dowdell had 23.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.22.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . That's a pretty nice little resume builder, no? The bubble-bound Spartans might've done enough last night to get themselves on the good side of the bubble, knocking off the #2 (or #1, depending on who you believe) team in all of college basketball. Drew Neitzel was incredible all night long, making plays, willing the ball into the bucket, and willing his team to victory. Neitzel had 28, and it left Tom Izzo on the brink of tears. Which I didn't really need to see.

(20) Texas 80, Texas Tech 51. Texas Tech was another bubble team with a chance to make a statement against a highly-regarded opponent. And they did make a statement, but that statement was, "Yes, please ... go ahead and beat our ass." Texas just rolled. It wasn't close past the 4-minute mark in the first half. Stat of the night: Every Texas player was in double figures, while no Texas Tech player was in double figures. That has to be rare.

Providence 64, (18) West Virginia 61. You live by the three, you die by the three ... it's a cliche, but it's true. When your shot is falling, you're capable of beating teams that you have no business beating. When it's not, though, you can lose to teams who have no business beating you. West Virginia shot (State of the night #2) 9-of-41 on the evening from beyond the arc, and they still had a chance to win it at the end. Providence got 24 from Weyinmi Efejuku.

UNLV 60, (13) Air Force 50. Consider this all Stat of the night #3: Just one game seperates them in the standings. Both are 10-4 in the conference, Air Force is 23-5, while UNLV is 23-6. Air Force is 13th in the RPI, and UNLV is 14th. And yet, Air Force is ranked 13th in the country, while UNLV is still answering questions about their postseason resume. That's amazing... it's crazy how this all works. And, oh yeah, they knocked off Air Force last night, getting 14 points from Kevin Kruger.

Missouri State 71, Wichita State 65. That puts Wichita State's slide at three games, while Missouri State keeps itself in line for an at-large bid. The Shockers shot a much better percentage from the floor, but extra possessions (just 4 turnovers to Wichita State's 11) and three-point shooting earned them the road W.

Tennessee Tech 73, Austin Peay 72. And tonight's Player of the night: Ah, Neitzel will get enough attention, let's give it to Golden Eagle Anthony Fisher, who finished with 30 points. Austin Peay already has the regular season OVC title sewn up, so they probably won't lose a lot of sleep, but Anthony Fisher? You go ahead and party down in Cookeville, buddy.

Kentucky 70, LSU 63. If Kentucky had lost, it would've been their first four-game losing streak since John Pelphrey took the floor in a UK jersey. At least Tim Hardaway will be pleased.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.21.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . They might as well just go ahead and paint a big Jayhawk in the middle of K-State's home court. This one was a big deal for the Wildcats ... Huggy targeted it as the day they'd finally beat Kansas, and the fans collaborated to all wear black (it's slimming), but unfortunately, none of that means that the Wildcats can compete with the Jayhawks just yet. 17 for Mario Chalmers and 20 on 8-of-11 shooting from Sherron Collins.

(8) Pittsburgh 71, Seton Hall 68. Stat of the night: Pitt is 6-0 in conference road games. I don't care who you are, in what conference ... that is manly. It speaks to Pitt's veteran leadership, and their ability to play a number of different styles. As for Seton Hall, you wouldn't know it from their record, but it doesn't feel like they're the same train wreck they were last year. It's a long, slow process, but Bobby Gonzalez has things moving in the right direction.

(16) Marquette, Villanova 67. Coming off three straight losses, it was important for Marquette to get back in the win column, and they did, against a quality opponent. It was a night for the freshmen ... Lazar Hayward had 17 for the Golden Eagles, and Scottie Reynolds had 25 for Villanova. Reynolds is going to be special.

(15) Butler 68, Wisconsin-Green Bay 58. Despite only hitting 35% of his shots, A.J. Graves was still able to lead all scorers. People were interested to see how he'd respond after the flu and the Salukis bottled him up on Saturday. He did not hesitate to launch. 17 from Brandon Crone, too.

Gonzaga 87, Portland 67. This one got out of hand quickly. It really escalated. It jumped up a notch. Portland was down 15 just 10 minutes into the game, and never got closer. Derek Raivio had 20 in his final home game.

New Jersey Institute of Technology 78, Longwood 74. Longwood was shriveled by the Highlanders, as Nesho "The War Criminal" Milosevic had 21 and 10, while Marc Millbourne Swan had 19.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.20.00 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . "We were fortunate tonight, frankly, to get out of here with the win," UCLA coach Ben Howland said. "But we played well down the stretch and made free throws when we needed them." Translation: "Thank God Arizona State sucks that bad." UCLA needed to come back from 10 down with 11 minutes to play to beat the 0-14 in the conference Sun Devils.

Cal 63, (17) Oregon 61. The Oregon free fall continues. They've lost five of seven, this one a particularly egregious loss. Cal was in the midst of a pretty sorry streak themselves, having lost six straight. Cal fans rushed the court ... which I guess is tradition now when you beat the #17 team in the country and the win gets you one game above .500. Ryan Anderson led the Bears with 18.

Purdue 81, (19) Indiana 68. It was close for 3/4th of the game, but at about the 10:00 mark of the second half, Purdue got hot, and Indiana couldn't recover. Three balls started going down (Purdue was 8-of-17 on the night), and the Hoosiers couldn't keep pace. David Teague, who sat out all of last year with a torn ACL, put up 32 big points for Purdue.

(23) USC 80, (24) Arizona 75. Lodrick Stewart was pretty good for a guy who didn't practice all week. He came off the bench after fighting an illness for the past few days, and scored 36 points in 30 extremely efficient minutes. He was 11-of-15 from the floor. Nick Young also had 26 for the Trojans, who hadn't beaten Arizona at the McKale Center in 21 years.

Notre Dame 81, Providence 78. It's difficult to win close games when you go for six-minute stretches in the second half without getting a point. That's the lesson Providence learned last night. Colin Falls led Notre Dame with 16.

UMass 74, Fordham 59. Fordham, whose logo reminds me of the Dodge logo, was gutted like a fish in the second half. Stephane Lasme led the Minutement with 18 points and 10 boards, as UMass enjoyed a 44-point second half.

IUPUI 75, Southern Utah 74. There is never a night off the Mid-Continent conference. IUPUI and SUU played a classic on Thursday night, and Austin Montgomery's layup with under 2 seconds to play sealed it for the Jags.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.16.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 16 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . It would probably be excessively mean to call Duke the Boston Celtics of the NCAA, but ... much like the Celtics did last night, Duke also snapped a losing streak. They did it by beating the stuffing out of the ACC-leading Boston College Eagles. The final margin of victory was 8, but that's deceiving ... Duke led by as many as 24 in the second half.

DePaul 72, (13) Marquette 67. Tom Crean spent the post-game press conference complaining that the refs couldn't hear his plea for a timeout, but ... Marquette lost by five, and the shot that Marquette ended up getting sans timeout would've only closed the margin to two. It's not like it clearly cost them the game or anything. The officials didn't make Dominic James force a contested three-ball that hit nothing but air.

(1) Florida 76, Alabama 67. Alabama had them down 18 in the second half, but it was like Florida suddenly remembered they were Florida after the break. They started making shots, they started pushing the tempo ... they forced the Tide to do things they didn't want to do, and they couldn't handle it.

(2) Ohio State 64, Penn State 62. This was one of those games where the second half was the completely opposite of the first half. The Buckeyes led by 21 at the break, but relaxed in the second half (that will always cost you), and Ohio State just missed a three-ball at the buzzer that would've won it.

Drake 62, Wichita State 58. The Missouri Valley might be a three-bid conference, it might even get four ... but it almost assuredly won't get five, and this loss keeps Wichita State in that fifth place spot. The Shockers really couldn't afford this one.

Tulane 86, Central Florida 80. UCF suffered a big blow in their quest to finish second in Conference USA behind Memphis. This will hurt their NIT seeding. The Green Wave, meanwhile continues to fight for a .500 record, and are now one game above at 12-11.

La Salle 77, Temple 72. Rough night for The Cos. Bill Cosby's dog didn't win at Westminster, and his Owls couldn't get a road win over lowly La Salle. Then again, Temple's pretty lowly themselves, these days.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.15.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 15 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . It's always been Bob Knight's policy to not call timeouts and set up plays at the end of games. His thinking is that his team should be better prepared for that situation than the other team, so don't give the other guys a chance to stop, reset, and think about what they're going to do. He trusts that his guys will know what to do, and it will give them an advantage. With six seconds left to play, A&M's Acie Law came off a ball screen to bury a jumper at the top of the key, and Knight opted against the timeout. Jarius Jackson took it the length of the court and pulled up for a short jumper. Perfectly calm and composed, he stuck it. Tech wins a great game between two very good teams.

(25) Virginia Tech 81, (4) North Carolina 80. Has Frank Beamer taken over the basketball program or something? Noted basketball school Virginia Tech went on the road and won in Chapel Hill last night, edging the 'Heels 81-80 in overtime. It's the second time this year that the Hokies have beaten UNC, and it brings their conference record to 8-3. When VT joined the ACC, people were worried that they'd drag down the quality of the conference's basketball, but they didn't think it would be because they made the conference's best teams look like chumps.

Tennessee 89, (18) Kentucky 85. On a night when you retire Bernard King's jersey, you better come strong with it. Tennessee did, pulling off the mild upset of Kentucky. When King was a freshman at Tennessee, he lost to Tennessee, and then vowed that it would never happen again. It didn't. Not during the rest of his playing career, and not last night. 23 points for Chris Lofton.

Michigan State 59, Michigan 44. This was a close, hotly-contested game until there were about 6:00 to play in the game, and Drew Neitzel decided he longer wanted the game to be close. He and Raymar Morgan took over and won it going away. Both teams are bubblicious right now, with Michigan in worse shape at the moment.

Creighton 66, Northern Iowa 55. That should just about do it for UNI's tournament hopes. Creighton guard Nick Porter was dazzling all night, and Dane Watts had the outside stroke going to get the home win.

Iowa State 58, Oklahoma 51. The question has been plaguing college basketball for a long time, and still, no one has an answers: How do you stop Jiri Hubalek? Jiri had a career-high 26.

Stetson 88, Savannah State 74. That'll teach you to mess with the Hatters. The schedule gets tough for Stetson after this, though. They play the Scarfers, the Pantsers, and the Lingeriers.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.14.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 14 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . West Virginia may be good ... but consistent, they are not. And Georgetown is not a team to be trifled with. When they're on, they're one of the best teams out there. In the last six days, they've taken Louisville, Marquette, and now WVU out to the woodshed. Early in the second half, there was some beef between WVU's Joe Alexander and G'Town's Patrick Ewing Jr. Ewing Jr. is just lucky this guy wasn't there to open up a can on him.

Texas 83, (20) Oklahoma State 54. The last time they played, it was a classic; the game of the year. This time ... not so much. Texas brought the lumber. They layed a second-half beating on the Cowboys, outscoring them 52-30 after the break. They got 21 and 12 from Kevin Durant, and every starter was in double figures. Efficient night for DJ Augustin, too. 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting, 8 assists and 3 turnovers.

Louisville 66, (5) Pitt 53. It's the worst loss ever for Pitt at the Petersen Events Center, and it's Louisville's most impressive Big East win ever. Louisville hounded Pitt with their zone, and forced the tempo, getting Pitt to turn the ball over 15 times in the first half. Pretty big win, and a much-needed win, for Louisville's NCAA resume.

Portland 55, Saint Mary's 47. Saint Mary's, the other Gaels (I can't believe we have two of those), had a rough night on the road. This one must have been a beauty to watch. The Portland Pilots shot 37% from the floor, and they were the hot team. Saint Mary's shot 28%.

Bethune-Cookman 46, South Carolina State 44. There's nothing like a little hot MEAC overtime action. This barnbarner ((C)Charles Barkley) was tied at 42 after regulation, inflicting overtime on the poor souls in attendance. Just cruel.

Central Connecticut State 80, Sacret Heart 66. At least one Blue Devil team has it headed in the right direction. The Central Connecticut Blue Devils got 27 points from Tristan Blackwood, who absolutely should be a porn star. Meanwhile, I love the little crest thing in the Sacred Heart Logo.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.13.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 13 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . State of the night #1: Butler was 20-of-33 from three-point land. Holy thunder. I don't care who you are or where you're playing ... if Butler is stroking 20 three-balls against you, you're not going to win. Pete Campbell himself was 8-of-11 from beyond the arc. And you know what's sick about it? Cleveland State's coach was happy with the defense his team played. "I want to say it was embarrassing, but we contested most of those shots, and they went in," said Gary Waters.

(11) Nevada 81, Fresno State 68. Stat of the night #2: 25 offensive rebounds for Nevada against Fresno State. No other team mentioned this morning in the Peach Basket Brief had more than 12. Nick Fazekas was on fire, with 33 points and 15 boards (and he was responsible for 7 of the offensive ones). Fresno State was a sorry 10-of-25 from the charity stripe. Nevada leads the WAC by a game and a half over New Mexico State.

DePaul 67, (21) Notre Dame 66. Notre Dame's the 21st-ranked team in the country, and DePaul is less than an afterthought ... yet only one game separates them in the Big East. Notre Dame had a chance to win the game on a put-back at the buzzer, but 25-point scorer Wilson Chandler stepped in and rejected it. Chandler's line: 25 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks.

Wichita State 61, Indiana State 45. Stat of the night #3: Indiana State scored once form the floor in the final 14 minutes of the game. After the 14:09 mark, the Sycamores didn't score again until they hit a three with 6:32 remaining. Their only other points came on free throws with under 2:00 to play. Hockey teams had better 15-minute stretches last night.

New Jersey Institute of Technology 67, South Dakota State 62. For some reason, ESPN did not pick up the game between the #314 and #328 RPI teams in the country. The heavily favored jackrabbits of SDSU fell to the scrappy underdog NJIT Bon Jovi Mirror Designers. Clayton Barker had 19 for NJIT.

Virginia Commonwealth 63, George Mason 49. Check out the Commonwealth ... winners of 12 of their last 13, and now a Top 50 RPI team. They're 21-4, with a two game lead in the Colonial. George Mason was never in the game.

Gardner-Webb 69, Mercer 68. Congratulations go out to Chris "Mash the" Gash, who scored his 1,000th career point last night. G-Webb built a 39-11 first half lead, then almost managed to blow it. Shaddean Aaron had 23 for Mercer.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.09.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 09 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . The difference was depth. Duke led for most of the game, but by the halfway point of the second half, it seemed like they lost all desire to keep up with Carolina. Missing free throws didn't really help, either. Now, observe the Blue Devils ... losers of three straight, with just a .500 record in the conference. They are in Strugglesville. Brandan Wright with 19 points and 9 boards, Ty Lawson with 15 points and 8 assists, and Tyler Hansbrough with 16 points led the Tarheels.

(6) Pitt 60, West Virginia 47. Sam Young appears to have been on the planet Earth for the sole purpose of torturing Mountaineers. And even though the Mountaineers didn't really have anyone who could match up against Aaron Gray, they still found a way to play outstanding defense ... they just couldn't get a jumper to go down. Live by it, die by it. A well-earned road win for Pitt.

(2) UCLA 70, (21) USC 65. USC, if nothing else, at least has proven that they're nearly as good as one of the best teams in the country. There were in a great position to win the game, but a technical foul (rightfully called, by the way) on Lodrick Stewart seemed to suck all the momentum from them. UCLA scored the next seven points, and that was it.

Creighton 79, Evansville 74. Gut check time for the Jays ... down 14 at the half, to a conference foe that you should beat, you need the win to keep pace with the conference leader, who happens to be the next team on your schedule ... and Nate Funk and Nick Porter step up and find a way. Now, they've got to find the energy to scrap with the Salukis on Saturday.

Oklahoma 67, (17) Oklahoma State 60. With the exception of a brief push about halfway through the second half, this one belonged to the Sooners all the way. Nate Carter was fantastic, with 18 points, the most important ones helping to subdue the Cowboy rally. The Sooners actually have a better conference record now than Oklahoma State.

Duquesne 111, La Salle 105. Sixty-eight total free throws were shot in the game (with 54 made), and 141 shots were taken from the floor. I didn't know the Atlantic 10 had become the fashionable high-scoring conference. Twenty-three points for Mr. February, Reggie Jackson.

St. John's 66, South Florida 61. Normally, you outscore a team 43-26 in the second half, you expect to win ... not the case for South Florida. Might have something to do with that 40-19 hole they dug themselves.

Purdue 62, Michigan State 38. Thirty-eight points? Hello, rock bottom.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.08.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 08 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . Sometimes, it seems like you could have Mike Conley, Greg Oden, and three stuffed animals on the floor, and beat most of the teams in the country. It was Conley's show last night against Michigan, scoring 23 points with 6 assists to just 1 turnover. Though it's not like Oden didn't contribute ... he had six blocks, and changed any other shot that was taken near the paint when he was in the game.

San Diego State 62, (13) Air Force 41. The Aztecs had gone over five years without beating a ranked team ... that's a hell of a long time. That's gotta be pretty hard to do ... it's not like college football where big upsets are rare. You don't even have to be that good to knock off a Top 25 team every now and then ... it just sort of happens. I wouldn't worry about it if I was Air Force ... they just had a terrible shooting night. That'll happen.

Nebraska 61, Texas Tech 59. The Red Raiders led by 11 with under 7:00 to play, but couldn't bring it home. I'm sure Bob Knight will be a pleasant guy in practice tomorrow. Nebraska's Charles Richardson stuck a three with no time on the clock, after a Tech player "saved" the ball ... it ended up in Richardson's hands, and he ended it.

Tennessee 70, LSU 67. Tennessee fans chanted "NIT" at LSU as they walked off the court in defeat ... which seems generous. The Tigers are 13-10 and 2-7 in the conference ... they better hope the NIT selection committee is as generous.

Providence 71, Cincinnati 70. Cincy's conference record falls to 1-8 ... the worst in the league. Sharaud Curry's free throw late seals it for the Friars.

Tennessee-Martin 76, Tennessee State 74. The latest installment in this heated rivalry goes to the ... hold on, let me look this up ... the Skyhawks. The Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks. What are they, an ABA team?

Wake Forest 87, Winston-Salem 71. Sometimes ... sometimes, you just need to take a breather. Hello, Winston-Salem. I always thought it would make sense for power conference coaches to save a few of those early season scrub games for later in the season. Take some breathers. Build some confience.

Missouri 77, Iowa State 55. 15 points for Stefhon Hannah, 13 for Matt Lawrence, and 12 for Kalen Grimes.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.07.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 07 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . The Aggies have had just about enough of your Kevin Durant hype. Durant was, in fact, spectacular last night, with 28 and 15 ... but that happened and A&M still whomped Texas by 18 points. In fact, Durant didn't even have the most impressive line of the night. How about Acie Law's 21 points and 15 assists? That's a very smart basketball player running the A&M offense.

Connecticut 67, Syracuse 60. Just your average battle between a couple of middle-of-the-pack Big East squads. It was Jim Calhoun's 500th win at UConn, and while that's a nice little feather in the cap of Calhoun, I'm sure he'd have liked this joyous occasion to have been a little more meaningful than just getting UConn's conference record to 4-6. Syracuse battled foul trouble all game long in an extremely uninspiring contest.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.06.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . It was supposed to be an epic battle between Pac-10 powerhouses, going back and forth the whole game, one team getting a legendary performance or miracle moment to top their talented foe. But it wasn't. It just kind of sucked. Oregon never really got close. Arron Afflalo had 17 for the Bruins, Darren Collison had 12, and Josh Shipp had 11. That evens the season series, but on this night ... UCLA just looked like a superior team.

Siena 61, Iona 60. There's a special spot in hell reserved for Kenny Hasbrouk. The now 0-22 Iona Gaels had their sights set on their first victory of the season ... until Hasbrouk took it away from them by hitting a jumper with under a second to play. Iona still isn't last in the RPI, though ... in fact, they're #325 out of a possible 336, one spot ahead of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the world's finest institution for Camaro repair.

(17) Washington State 72, (22) Arizona 66. Cougar senior Ivory Clark told reporters after the game, "I know what kind of team we have in that locker room, and those guys don't like to lose anymore." Anymore? A month ago, did they enjoy the losing experience? Did they buy party hats and guzzle M&Ms after they were beaten? If so, I hope they passed that on to Arizona ... because if they don't enjoy losing, they're probably all on the brink of suicide. That makes six losses in their last eight games.

Virginia 68, (10) Duke 66. Poor Duke couldn't get any breaks from the clock operator last night ... Sean Singletary redefined clutch ... hitting a big key bucket with 25 seconds left in regulation, and then the coup de grace, a falling, horizontal, one-handed prayer with 1 second left in overtime. With that 1.0 on the clock, Greg Paulus got a very good look at a three, but couldn't hit it. If only they could've found a way to get more time on the clock.
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.02.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 02 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . And just like that, a 17-game winning streak has disappeared, enveloped in the denim tidal wave that is the coaching acumen of Kelvin Sampson. Sampson's Hoosiers got twenty bench points from AJ Ratliff and 16 more from stud forward DJ White, and that was enough to topple the Badgers. Alando Tucker led all scorers with 23, including a couple of big second half three-balls that tied it up for Wiscy. But Ratliff answered by rattling of a quick six points, and that sealed it for Indiana.

(23) Texas 76, Texas Tech 64. Texas Tech scored 42 points in the first half, to Texas's 38. But Texas Tech scored 22 points in the second half, to Kevin Durant's 24. Yes, he outscored the entire Red Raiders roster by himself in the second stanza ... and all of this on the way to a 37-point, 23-rebound effort. That's just mind-boggling. Texas Tech is a pretty good team, and you can't go on the road and beat them by double digits without getting a crazy effort by someone. Kevin Durant wants to be drafted #1 overall.

(4) Ohio State 78, Purdue 60. But here's the other side of that argument. Greg Oden last night had -- and these numbers won't blow your mind -- 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. But the impressive thing about Oden is that he had those numbers and still managed to get the opposing coach to call him the best player in college basketball. "... I've said from day one he's the best player in college basketball," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "Because you have to do so many things to really hold him down to stop his total affect on the game."
The Peach Basket Brief: 02.01.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 01 Feb 2007 08:50:00 EST . Syracuse started the game in their traditional 2-3 zone ... Notre Dame shot them out of it. They played man most of the way, and Notre Dame still shredded them. They're the first team to score 100 points in the Carrier Dome in 10 years, the last being West Virginia in 1996 (Damian Owens, holla). And by the way, those black Notre Dame jerseys with the green stripes are a travesty. That's a crime against basketball and Catholicism. The Pope needs to step in here.

(25) UNLV 76, Colorado State 59. UNLV was the only other Top 25 team in action, and they cudgeled the Colorado State Rams, by a score of 76-59. They got Kevin Kruger back from a three-week absence, and while he kicked in just six points in sixteen minutes, he felt good ... and that's what matters. Eleven players scored for UNLV ... everyone got on the board except Matt Shaw, who will probably not be a lottery pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.

Wichita State 67, Northern Iowa 61. The once-struggling Shockers are storming back in a big way, picking up a tough road conference win at Northern Iowa. The win brings them to 15-8 overall, 6-6 in the MVC, with road wins against Syracuse, LSU, and now, UNI. That sounds pretty close to a tournament resume to me. UNI, meanwhile, slides to 6-5 in the conference and 15-7 overall. As good as both these teams are, they're both just middle-of-the-pack MVC'ers.

Illinois 57, Michigan State 50. Illinois is capable of really clamping down defensively, when they want to. In their last three wins, they've given up 50, 43, and 52 points to conference foes. Tonight, they held Michigan to a 17-of-46 shooting performance, including a 2-of-12'er from Drew Neitzel. Sixth man Chester Frazier led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
The Peach Basket Brief: 01.31.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 31 Jan 2007 08:50:00 EST . Oh, boy. To most people, it's loathsome enough when Duke hits a buzzer shot to win a game. When some, well, fuzzy, clock operation comes in to play ... well, there are a lot of Clemson fans tonight calling the Blue Devils a bunch of clocksuckers. Without going into too much detail, Duke should've had 2.4 seconds to attempt a last second shot, but they ended up with 4.4. Check the video here. And with that 4.4, of course ... Duke's David McClure got himself a lay-up and won the game. You will likely hear more about this, and it will likely include profanity.

Washington 89, (7) Oregon 77. When you've lost six of your last seven, it's not a bad night when you can come out and beat the #7 team in the country. Washington, who looked to be going nowhere, now at least has a stepping stone. I mean, they're still probably not a tournament team with their 2-6 conference record, but ... this win over #7 Oregon, and their win over LSU ... that's not bad for a team in the Pac-10's bottom three. That conference is deeper than Barry White's voice.

(15) Nevada 84, Louisiana Tech 67. Tech made up their mind to limit Nick Fazekas and Marcellus Kemp, and they did ... they had 25 combined. They forgot about Ramon Sessions, though. Nevada's point guard filled the scoring void with 21 points, and chipped in 7 boards and 7 assists, too. I love stat lines like that.

Stanford 65, USC 50. And speaking of lovable stat lines ... Stanford's Brook Lopez: 18 points, 11 rebounds, 12 blocked shots. Who is this guy, Bill Russell? Not only is a college triple double pretty rare, but a college triple double with blocks as one of the categories? Ladies of the Stanford campus ... take care of Brook Lopez. He's earned it. No one's had a triple double at Stanford since 1985.
The Peach Basket Brief: 01.26.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 26 Jan 2007 08:50:00 EST . When you're growing up and playing in youth leagues, sometimes there's a kid who's just more developed than everyone else ... you know, he'll be in sixth grade, and he'll have a mustache, and he'll smoke two packs of Marlboro Reds every day, and he'll be divorced ... and they make him go play with older kids, because it's just not fair. That's sort of the situation with Greg Oden in the Big 10. His 17 rebounds were the biggest reason why Ohio State had a 19-19 edge on Northwestern on the boards, and his 17 and 17 output was probably the biggest reason the Buckeyes won, 59-50.

Georgia 78, (25) Kentucky 69 (OT). I'm starting to believe that a guy could make a pretty decent profit if all the did was bet on home teams in conference games. I might start tracking that. The 25th-ranked Wildcats lost at Georgia, as the Bulldogs won the overtime, 13-4. Takais Brown and Sundiata Gaines both have bad-ass names and combined for 39 points. Kentucky wasted Joe Crawford's 29 points, 17 of which came in the first half.

Texas Tech 70, (6) Texas A&M 68. It's the second straight victory over a Top-10 team for the Red Raiders. They beat Kansas over the weekend, and they just got a big win over A&M at, you guessed it, home. Tech made just 7 shots from the floor in the second half, but five of them were threes. "That doesn't make me feel any better about 3-point shots," Bob Knight said. "I don't like it, didn't like it, not going to like it. It was good tonight, though." I love it when Knight bubbles over with joy like that.

Vanderbilt 64, (22) LSU 53. Ross Neltner had just 2 points and 4 boards, but it had to be a pretty nice night for him. The Vanderbilt forward once transferred from LSU ... in fact, his girlfriend's still on LSU's dance team. But still, it had to be nice for his team to get the big win in Baton Rouge (sometimes, road teams do win), even if his girlfriend is probably cheating on him now.
The Peach Basket Brief: 01.25.07 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 25 Jan 2007 08:50:00 EST .
