As a high school player, Diggins was among the best in the nation, averaging 20 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks a game. She also won many awards, including 'Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year' (twice), All American Honors (three times) and was named the '2009 Indiana Miss Basketball.' Michael McCarthy has a great article in Wednesday's USA Today about Kevin Laue, a 19-year-old who was born without his left hand and forearm but has nonetheless earned a Division I college basketball scholarship at Manhattan College.

The 6-foot-11 Laue, who cites former Major League Baseball pitcher Jim Abbott as a personal hero, told USA Today he hopes people who see him play become inspired by what he's overcome:
"Maybe me playing with one hand inspires others to try to work harder toward their goals. Or their dreams. I hope it does inspire them. I hope I can help them in any way I can."
But Laue isn't just a feel-good story. His teammate Rico Pickett says, "He's a good player just like any other players. I don't see him as any different."

The first time Laue takes the floor for Manhattan, it's likely that everyone watching will see him as different: It's not every day you see an NCAA player with one hand. But Laue, who averaged 10 points and five rebounds a game last year at Fork Union Military Academy, won't need much time on the floor before he shows everyone that Pickett is right: He's just like any other player.

Also, the best exchange of the entire interview was when Colbert suggested some sort of Flying V basketball play, only to get a mild smile from Krzyzewski, who admitted he might try the play at some point.

Bruce Pearl seems like a pretty intense dude. He's willing to paint himself orange and run around Knoxville, Tenn., shirtless, for one thing. For another, he yells a lot. Well, on Thursday night against South Carolina, he was rocking a blazer-white T-shirt combo. And at one point during the first half, he ripped said blazer off. Brent Musberger noticed, too. Enjoy.



I tend to like Pearl, even if he does embody everything about Tennessee that is so, well, Tennessean. But I'm pretty sure that unspoken coaching etiquette dictates that if you wear the T-shirt-blazer combo, you leave the blazer on for the entire game.

Digger Phelps is one of ESPN's most colorful characters. I mean that literally, too. The guy matches his highlighters to his ties. Above, Duke's John Scheyer takes approximately 147 steps and somehow doesn't get whistled for traveling late in Saturday's win over Virginia Tech. Duke led Virginia Tech by three with about 20 seconds left at the time, meaning the officials cost the Hokies the chance to get the ball back and send the game into overtime.

Here's how David Teel of The Daily Press describes it:
Scheyer caught an inbounds pass in backcourt from Kyle Singler and was swarmed immediately by Tech's J.T. Thompson and Terrell Bell.

In this morning's print column, also available online, I described Scheyer's subsequent tapdance as an "apparent walk." Well, there's no apparent about it.

Scheyer changed his pivot foot at least twice, maybe three times. But officials Gary Maxwell, Tony Greene and Bob Donato swallowed their whistles until Duke was able to call timeout.

Tech coach Seth Greenberg was quick to volunteer during his postgame news conference that there's no guarantee the Hokies would have made a 3 to tie the game, but he did say the officials missed it.

They sure did, leading Tech fan Burt Baker and others to dub it the "Scheyer Shuffle."
The refs let Duke get away with a blantant travel last week, too. Way to work the refs, Coach K.

Greg Paulus is always a bit of a goat in terms of national hatred (see: "Duke Sucks" having more entries at Mister I than "Greives Vasquez".) Of course, he's following a long line of Duke point guards who have experienced the same thing. Although I don't know if they all heard "Tea-Bag-Paul-Us!" as the announcers in the following clip seemed to imply while the Virginia Tech fans mocked the Duke point guard during some free throw attempts.

Last week, one of the top remaining unsigned recruits for 2009, Renardo Sidney made his choice of USC. It was something of an anticlimax since it was supposed to be down to UCLA and USC, but UCLA had made it known that they were no longer interested in him a few days prior. That alone would make the show of revealing his choice by donning a hat a little ridiculous.

Sidney took it to new heights with sealed boxes and well, much stronger ribbon than the 6-foot-11 big man expected.

George Mason University's basketball team is known mostly for getting to the Final Four in 2006, but now it will be getting some attention for something else. At a George Mason game last weekend, a drag queen was chosen as the school's homecoming queen.

The drag queen was Ryan Allen, a senior at George Mason who performs in drag at nightclubs in the region. He told the Associated Press he entered the homecoming court election as a joke, under the name Reann Ballslee. But enough people went along with his joke that he won:
"I was very touched by how Mason was so supportive through the whole process of allowing a boy in a dress to run for homecoming queen," Allen said in a phone interview. "It says a lot about the campus that not only do we have diversity but we celebrate it."
University spokesman Dan Walsch told the AP the school is "very comfortable" with Allen's selection. Although Allen's title is "Ms. Mason," the contest rules say nothing about the winner having to be female.

"It's just that if you're a man who runs for Ms., you've got to dress the part," Walsch added.

Tim Floyd obviously wasn't very happy with a particular call in USC's loss to Arizona State the other night. He was so angry, in fact, that he stormed on the court leading ASU's Jeff Pendergraph to say he thought Floyd "... was going to punch the ref." After the fact, Floyd bemoaned the officiating and his inability to discuss said officiating, stating at the end of the following video that, "We don't have freedom of speech as coaches ... I can't discuss it ... Maybe [Barack] Obama will change that rule ... and we can talk." Well played, Coach Floyd. Well played.

The most exciting matchup of the Connecticut-Pittsburgh fracas tonight was clearly DeJuan Blair vs. Hasheem Thabeet. Both big men, combined, have pulled down 23.1 rebounds and blocked 5.2 shots per game heading into the contest. It would likely be a battle. But I don't think anyone expected to see a Royal Rumble move (albeit an accidental one) busted out, when, just three minutes into the game, Blair accidentally (I think) flipped Thabeet to the floor.

FanHouse was on site for Duke - Carolina. And we have Notes from Cameron Indoor.

Herb Neubauer is a legend at Duke basketball games. You probably know him as "Crazy Towel Guy." (He got his own Wiki page, but it was deleted.) This is because Neubauer, an elderly gentleman and tremendous Duke fan, wildly swings his white towel at least once a game as the students cheer him on. He's so endearing, in fact, that he's basically one of them. So much so that he comes in the student entrance. Witness below, as he chugs a Monster energy drink, smashes it on the ground and freaks out.

This Youtubery of Blake Griffin getting absolutely unholy has been making the rounds all day but I give credit to Luke Winn (since I saw it there first, naturally) for pointing me towards the thunder. Tom Crean won his first Big Ten conference game Wednesday night (It's a Swingers moment, "Our little baby is all growsed up") and, understandably, the guy was a little excited. Although, perhaps tackling the leader of Indiana's band was a bit much, no? Seriously though, while I want to criticize him for being overly exuberant, as Ryan Corazza said, it's hard not to love the guy for being enthusiastic. And besides, he's not Kelvin Sampson. So that's an immediate plus.
