It was curious behavior indeed, and Self addressed the exchange after Kansas topped Texas A&M last night.

"Basically, it's accurate," Self said after beating Texas A&M 73-53 Monday night. "I don't know if the exact quote is accurate. After the game was over, like I always do, like every coach always does, I had to catch a plane. So I went back to tell the coaches, 'Congratulations, good win.' I was approached and shook a hand and said, `I can't talk to you, but you played really well."'

"If that exchange, which is all it was, is a problem, then our administration will deal with it," Self said. "I certainly by no means am going to deny that basically that happened. But the reason I was back in the back was to say hi to the coaches after the game."

"Will deal with it," as I mentioned yesterday, probably means "self report it if it becomes an issue." Unfortunately. On one hand, Self didn't do anything so absurdly serious that we should freak out on him, I suppose, but the NCAA theoretically draws a line in the recruiting sand; at what point do we just stop going along with "infractions" that are "fuzzy"?

The blurriness of the issue brings about another point that I find more interesting: Self says, if I'm understanding this correctly, that he was approached by Wall after the game and not the other way around. Which seems very, very odd given the context of the quotations that Allen Vaughn described yesterday.

But the point of this is not to accuse Bill Self of being dishonest or even stretching the truth of the situation; my general beef, again, is with the NCAA for being so wishy-washy about recruiting, when it's blatantly clear that we have issues surrounding the courtship of amateur athletes. And frankly, looking the other way -- but only sometimes -- seems a bit disingenuous.
Bill Self Cops to Recruiting Violation But With Different Spin originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 15:45:00 EST . One of them is that we pay athletes millions of dollars to play sports. This has resulted in an increasingly powerful amount of pressure being placed on our culture's youth to succeed and be recognized for their athletic endeavors at an earlier age than ever before.

And that pressure just got stronger. Because the NCAA, bastion of all things good and wonderful and pure and true about amateur athletics, has lowered the legal age with which a younger player can be classified as a "prospect." That's right. It's not just ninth-graders that can be courted by college coaches, now it's seventh- and eighth-graders too!

The organization voted Thursday to change the definition of a prospect from ninth grade to seventh grade - for men's basketball only - to nip a trend in which some college coaches were working at private, elite camps and clinics for seventh- and eighth-graders. The NCAA couldn't regulate those camps because those youngsters fell below the current cutoff.

"It's a little scary only because - we talked about this - where does it stop?" said Joe D'Antonio, chairman of the 31-member Division I Legislative Council, which approved the change during a two-day meeting at the NCAA Convention. "The fact that we've got to this point is really just a sign of the times."

Indeed it is, Mr. D'Antonio, indeed it is. And those times are what we like to call "horribly sad." Of course, on the other hand, at least this move by the NCAA -- unlike refusing to adopt a playoff -- is designed to keep everything on the up and up, insomuch as no one wants college coaches holding private sessions with seventh-graders.

Via R at MPS
Recruiting Gets Younger; NCAA Now Classifies Seventh-Graders as 'Prospects' originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 13:45:00 EST . Well, okay, it was more like Carolina was somehow 0-2 in the ACC, reeling off of losses to Boston College and Wake Forest, and the faint possibility of an 0-3 nightmare existed for the Heels.

It wasn't the case. Obviously. Tyler Hansbrough, despite shooting poorly from the floor, still managed to pass Christian Laettner for sixth all-time in ACC scoring (please don't get me started on who's more awesome between the two of those guys).

What does this mean specifically? It means that we can all -- and by "all" I mean, again, "everyone who didn't pick Wake Forest to win the national championship" (Note: you will see that link no less than 4,000 times this season) -- get right back aboard the Chapel Hill bandwagon. It didn't take Jay Bilas long; he's already posted on the WWL that Hans-brah is his POY ... again. And you'll never believe this, but rumor has it that his "will exceeds his skill."

Of course, the smart thing is to realize that it's not all Psycho T for the Tar Heels; Ty Lawson protected the ball and was significantly better from the floor than he was in the Heels' two losses and, well, Virginia's not that good. At all.

Which, if you think about it, is kind of scary for Carolina. Yes, Marcus Ginyard is still out, but when Deon Thompson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green combine for 11-for-29 from the field against the Wahoos, it's probably a little too early for everyone to jump up and pronounce the baby blues completely cured.

The truth is that it behooves the national media to pump up Carolina, especially when 95 percent of the people screaming at you from the television picked the Heels to win it all. And maybe they are "back" ... but aside from Clemson, they've got a pretty cushy sked between now and a Feb. 11 showdown at Cameron. Just want to throw that out there.
Hansbrough, Tar Heels Roll UVA; People Need to Settle on Crowning Them originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 01:05:00 EST . He wears number three on his jersey. His last name is, obviously, Paul. His nickname is MP3. So when you see that his claim in the most recent Mizzou media booklet that he is the "first cousin of New Orleans Hornet Chris Paul", well, you don't blink twice.

But you probably should. Michael Kelly, a senior at Missouri traveled all the way to New Orleans to do a story about the two cousins and their success on the hardwood, and was met with a shocking little surprise.

As Matt Moore, Mizzou alum says, "the hits just keep on comin'!"
[...] Chris said he had no idea who Miguel was.

As he was walking out of the Alario Center after practice, Chris said he had never heard or met Miguel.

[...]"I'm shocked at the fact that this may not be true because Miguel said all of this stuff and you have all the comparisons at Missouri,'' Kelly said.

But that's not all! Miguel had previously done an interview -- in November of 2008 -- for the Columbia Missourian in which he talked about how he and CP3 met in Raleigh ... and how he didn't want to go to Wake Forest because "I wanted to create my own footsteps, go my own way ..."

Presuming that this is all false -- and it has to be, right? -- where does this stand on creepy/stalker/identity theft levels? I mean, he didn't pretend to be Chris Paul, but he certainly did pretend to be his relative. And while I would absolutely want to emulate CP3 in all facets of my life if I were a point guard playing college basketball ... well, this is just a little to Finkle-Marino-esque for my tastes.
Missouri's Miguel Paul Apparently Fibbed About Being Related to Chris Paul originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 18:00:00 EST . (I say "most" because, well, some smart people picked them to win the national title before the season.) But it really wasn't shocking to see them jump Duke in the AP poll and become the nation's new number two ranked team; Pittsburgh, naturally, stayed put at one.

The only shocking thing to see was that in the Coaches poll, the Deacs didn't jump the Devils. Quite odd, considering that, even as good as Duke is, Wake did just beat the unstoppable will of one Tyler Hansbrough. Perhaps it has something to do with Mike Krzyzewski's recent comments to the media about the lack of respect his Devils have been getting.

I don't even think it was mentioned in the newspapers here, that we were No. 2 in the polls. Fact, I know it wasn't mentioned, so I guess nobody really cares. It's interesting, always interesting to me in 29 years here, the subtleties of the local press is funny in some respects.

Yes, it does seem a bit excessive ... but he kind of has a point; the local media (and national to a degree) have been slobbering all over the Tar Heels this season. And when they haven't been busy massaging Psycho T's thighs, everyone's been surprised at just how good this Deacs team has played.

So maybe Duke deserves a little love. Or maybe we just wait until January 28 to see who walks out of LJVM in Winston with a win. Odds are pretty good that it'll be a matchup of the top two teams in the ACC at the time.

Snubbage via 850
Wake Forest Jumps Duke to Second Overall ... And few friends. The latter consists primarily of: your teammates and your fans. You do not want to anger your fans, even if they're giving you a hard time occasionally.

Greivis Vasquez does not seem to understand this. Despite averaging 17.9 points (sixth best in the ACC)and 6.2 boards (12th in the conference) per game, Vasquez caught some flak from a few students recently. The bigger problem is that he didn't exactly play through it, deciding instead to let loose a not-so-polite phrase in the direction of the group.

When Vasquez missed a shot or made a mistake, a cluster of Maryland students either booed the guard or yelled for Vasquez to shape up. And Vasquez responded at least three times by turning toward his classmates (once while dribbling the ball), putting his index finger over his lips and telling them to "Shut the [expletive] up!"

Yeeeeeah. That's not going to be good for anyone. And neither is Greivis' postgame statement.

The likes of which should do little to quiet the backlash from the College Park faithful.

"If they don't believe in us, they can get the hell out. We don't need them anyway. We need the people who will support us, who are with us. I know they are all happy now, but they didn't believe in us when we were down."

So, um, right. Vasquez apparently has no love lost for his fellow Terrapin students, which, as the gents at Mr. I point out, is not the best way to behave after coughing up a home loss to Morgan State.

It kind of makes you wonder, though, whether or not this will actually end on the basketball court. Is it really so inconceivable that Greivis could find himself at a frat party where some meathead tells him to "STFU" right back? Given some of the ridiculous athlete-related behavior we've seen recently, it certainly doesn't seem implausible.
Maryland Fans Boo Greivis Vasquez, Vasquez Tells Them to 'Shut the F*** Up' originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Mon, 12 Jan 2009 15:15:00 EST . Washington D.C. is juiced over all things related to President Elect Barack Obama. Everyone wants to see him, anywhere.

So, this Friday the Howard Bison have a home opener against the Oregon State Beavers. Considering the fact that Oregon State's head coach is Obama's brother-in-law, well the speculation has been brewing for a while, and considering how hard it can be for Howard to get sell-outs even in a 2700 seat gymnasium, they don't seem eager to dismiss the possibility.

"If they are in Washington, I don't know why they wouldn't come to the game," Howard Coach Gil Jackson said. "He likes basketball, and he and Craig are boys. They are supportive and would probably want to see Craig play as much as they could. My sister is coming to the game."

Datcher said 20-25 security personnel are usually on hand for home games, including those who man doors. An appearance by the Obamas would mean enhanced university security -- Datcher did not have specifics yesterday -- in addition to the Secret Service detail for the Obamas.

"How they handle security, they may not publicize that ahead of time," Jackson said. "They may just show up."

Depending upon who is in the gym, a ticket to watch two teams that won a combined 12 games last season could suddenly become coveted. A ticket-office official said tickets are still available ($15 and $20) but declined to say how many remained.

This game was scheduled before Oregon State Coach Craig Robinson took the job. The Howard Athletic Director indicated that he expected to find out sometime Wednesday. No word as to whether he'll be sharing the news with anyone else.
Toughest Ticket to Score on the Opening Week: Oregon State-Howard originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 21:36:00 EST . The transfer to Oklahoma City in the NAIA seemed like a lock. There was no way he'd transfer from Louisville to somewhere else in Division 1. He'd have to sit out a year, and given the lack of motivation he had when he had playing time, what would happen to him if he sat? Of course, this is Derrick Caracter, who seems to have no clue what he wants. So, why not transfer to Southern Mississippi.

Southern Miss has apparently received Caracter's release and transcript from Louisville to make the transfer happen. Caracter sitting out a year. Just working out and (maybe) going to class. That doesn't seem likely.

I'm not rooting against the kid. With the talent he has occasionally shown, I'd love to see it work. If I had to bet, though, the money would be flowing the other way.
Derrick Caracter to Southern Miss? Teams like Louisville, UConn, Pitt, and Memphis were recruiting him. Then, they started backing away. Pope had a disastrous summer AAU season in 2006. His effort was questioned. He fought with his AAU coach. There were increasing signs that he wasn't worth the risk.

Eventually he signed with Reggie Theus and New Mexico State. Pope was shot several times in March 2007 while at a party. New Mexico State stood by him, and even after Theus left for the NBA Pope decided to stick with the Aggies. Granted, it took a lot longer with some academic questions from the NCAA. NMSU stood by Pope even after a DUI arrest.

Pope had a bad family history as he bounced to family members and changed schools several times. He appeared to find some stability in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania (outside of Pittsburgh). Yet, just before the start of his junior and senior years he nearly transferred to a prep school in Florida -- only to change his mind back at the last minute.

So, really, should it have come as a shock that Pope would explore transferring from NMSU just as the new school year is about to get underway? Well, he looked into Seton Hall and possibly Duquesne. The problem was that Pope wanted to have the NCAA give him a hardship waiver to play this season -- before he actually transferred. They system doesn't work that way -- and it was hard to figure what family issues would excuse playing in New Jersey when his family is in Western Pennsylvania and Maryland.

So, after all of that, Pope decided to remain with the Aggies. If history is any indication, NMSU Coach Marvin Menzies can expect this to repeat itself at least one more season -- if Pope lasts that long.
It's Deja Vu for New Mexico State's Herb Pope originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sat, 30 Aug 2008 00:06:00 EST . After announcing a raise and one year extension for basketball coach John Pelphrey, Arkansas also announced the raising of ticket prices and the creation of 34 super-premium seats that cost $12,000 per year and are only available to those fans who donate at least $10,000 per year to the athletic department.

All well and good, but will there be anything worth watching at Bud Walton Arena? The team was already trying to rebuild and had lost four of its five leading scorers from the past year to graduation. Now the team's second leading scorer and leading rebounder is also gone for the upcoming season.

Late Friday afternoon the UA sports information department issued a two-sentence press release stating: "Junior guard Patrick Beverley will not compete for the Razorbacks in the 2008-2009 basketball season. The University of Arkansas, including its administration and coaches, will have no further comment due to student privacy laws."

By all reports, Beverley is academically ineligible. Not simply, one or two classes he has to make-up and could be ready by December academically ineligible. Apparently this is, worse. To the point, where it isn't even clear that Beverley will bother staying in Fayetteville. Instead he may be looking to go pro overseas.

The top returning scorers -- Stefan Walsh and Michael Washington -- didn't combine to average 10 points per game last season. The Razorbacks have only ten scholarship players including five true freshmen, a redshirt freshman and a junior college transfer. Not much of a doubt that Pelphrey will be earning his salary this coming season.
Will Arkansas Have Anyone Who Can Score? originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 23:58:00 EST . Arguably it is the sort of thing that puts a collective chip on the team's shoulder to carry them to March. Go ahead, choose your cliche. Or perhaps it is just best to prepare for 2009. The Pacific Tigers might as well.

A team expected to battle for the Big West title in the upcoming year, finds itself in a mess. A sexual assault investigation dating back to May apparently -- though not officially confirmed or denied -- led to the suspension of three players from the Pacific Tigers' squad for the 2008-09 season.

Pacific spokesman Richard Rojo said he could not disclose whether those players - senior point guards Steffan Johnson and Michael Kirby and senior center Michael Nunnally - were involved in an alleged sexual assault investigated by the school.

The school's investigation and judicial review process of the reported assault ended last week, but the school did not release the names of the students involved, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, a federal law protecting the privacy of student education records. No criminal complaint was filed, police said.

Sources said that the alleged assault involved three men's basketball players and a women's basketball player.

One of the players, Steffan Johnson, is apparently not going to be with the team. Instead, he will be transferring to Idaho -- maybe.

[Idaho Head Coach Don] Verlin wouldn't comment other than to confirm his interest in Johnson on Wednesday, a day after the first-year Idaho coach may have broken NCAA rules while discussing Johnson in an interview with the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. Verlin told the newspaper he has spoken to Johnson four or five times - most recently Friday - and hopes to add the first-team All-Big West Conference player to his team.

"As far as Steffan transferring to the University of Idaho, I would hope so," said Verlin, the twin brother of Pacific associate head coach Ron Verlin. "He's going through a situation where he's trying to figure out what he's going to do next. Has there been conversations between Steffan and us? Yes. But there's nothing official yet."
...
"There's nothing going on in the legal aspect of it," Verlin told the Daily News. "It's just like every kid that we recruit and will recruit during my time at the University of Idaho - we've checked his legal background, and he doesn't have a record. From what I've found out, and (Pacific is) not able to comment too much on it, there's nothing there."

Verlin said his brother gave Johnson a favorable recommendation.

Of course, Don Verlin has been recruiting at Idaho since March of this year. Not exactly a long stretch to judge his standards. Usually the punishment for this sort of premature public talking by a coach is an admonishment not to do it again. It's a secondary rules violation. This could be escalated given the fact that there could be a view of facilitating or extra influence with the fact that the associate head coach at Pacific is the twin brother of Idaho's head coach.

Of course the whole thing has become a complete mess. The victim did not file a criminal complaint, but the suspensions were issued by the school's judicial review board. The actual crime allege remains vaguely classified as "sexual assault." Something that Pacific classifies broadly as unwanted contact to sex without consent.

According to FoxSports.com's Jeff Goodman, Seffan Johnson is planning a lawsuit against Pacific for the one-year suspension that has him transferring. One of the suspended players is staying at Pacific, but let's just say he does not make himself entirely sympathetic when he talks about events.

"I definitely feel like my name has been hurt, but people know what type of person I am," [Michael] Nunnally said. "That's why I'm not trippin' about trying to plead my case. ... I have a lot of fans, and they know me. ... They already know what the deal is. I really don't care what the outsiders think."
...
Nunnally declined to specify whether he engaged in consensual or non-consensual sex with the alleged victim, but he insisted he had not committed one of the most egregious violations of the school's sexual assault policy. Under the school's policy, sexual assault can range from rape to consensual sex with someone under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"If it was forcible rape, do you think I would be at this school?" said Nunnally, who was named California community college co-player of the year at Delta in 2006-07. "Do you think they would want me to come back?"

After comments like that, probably not as eager to have him back as before. Nunnally may feel that he is as much of a victim in the decision by the judicial review board, but to be so casual about any aspect that involves allegations of sexual assault only suggests that he doesn't grasp the seriousness of what it entails.
Pacific's Season Over Before Summer Is originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sun, 10 Aug 2008 21:09:00 EST . Yes, it is real. Yes, it was a player's ring. No, no one will think you actually won it.
This is a UNC players NCAA National Championship Ring year 2005. Its in immaculate condition. Its made of 10 Karat yellow Gold and has a Genuine Diamond on both sides of the year 2005. It weights approx 32.28 grams.

The bidding is up to $3,500.

The fact that this ring has been up for auction has made many wonder "who needs the money?" The player's name has been blocked out of the pictures ... but it is still on the ring. Maybe it was one of the bench guys trying to cash in. Maybe one of the "stars" has a financial problem?

Well, the buzz is that it is David Noel's ring. Noel was a junior that season and has struggled with his young NBA career. The fact that this is some other person selling the ring suggests that Noel sold or pawned the ring at some point.

However, the ring is actually the NCAA-issued championship set which is bland. The University hooks them up with better rings with quite a bit more bling.

No word on if he sold that yet.

Hat tip to a buddy I work with (who is a Duke fan) on this story.
Tar Heels 2005 Championship Ring Is Being Auctioned on eBay originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 01:24:00 EST . Don't get me wrong, I'll still get together with friends to play basketball, football, or baseball once in a while, but the last team I belonged to was in high school. I remember playing football back then, and every Friday before a game we would basically have a walk-through of Saturday's game-plan.

At the end of every Friday practice, before the team would "break it down" our coach would give us a little speech about that week's game. When he came to the end of this weekly speech, he would always tell us the same thing.

"Boys, no sex tonight."

Now what in the hell kind of thing is that to tell a 16-year old kid who is going to a party that night? Why the hell am I going to the party if I'm not allowed to have sex? Still, it's an axiom that has existed in sports for quite a while. In the movie Rocky, Rocky's trainer Mickey tells him not to have sex with ADRIAN(!!!) before his fight because "women weaken legs."

Since Mickey said it, the entire world believed it. I mean, you try looking into those eyes of his and not melting. It's impossible not to believe him. Well, unless you're a cold-hearted scientist or a doctor who refuses to believe things without actual proof.

I'd like to introduce you to the newest American hero, University of Kansas team physician Sean Cupp. Cupp believes he can prove what I spent many a Friday afternoon trying to convince my football coach was a bunch of bull.

University of Kansas sports team physician Sean Cupp sure thinks so. Cupp, a sports medicine specialist, said no true scientific studies proved night-before sex impedes performance in any way. In fact, Cupp said if sex was part of an athlete's typical nighttime routine, the person shouldn't suddenly abandon lovemaking.

"Basically, the best way to continue positive performance outcomes would be to not change your pre-game ritual," Cupp said.

"You won't find a more superstitious bunch of people than coaches and athletes," Cupp said. "If they feel like they have a pretty good system, they're not going to stray from it."
The original theory behind the no sex rules weren't really that the act of sex weakens the legs-in reality, it strengthens them-but that it takes away an athlete's aggression. Since ejaculating draws testosterone away from the body, coaches were concerned that all that dopamine released in his defensive end's brain would cause him to hug the quarterback instead of breaking him in half.

In actuality, some recent experiments have shown that having sex the night before a game or match increases your testosterone levels, which means not only does having sex help the athlete break the quarterback in half, but he actually wants to go after the guy's family as well.

So if you have a big game tomorrow, or hell, even just a meeting at work, get yourself out there and get some tonight, fellas. You won't regret it. Well, at least not for a couple of weeks until you get the "I'm pregnant" call, but you'll cross that bridge when you come to it.
Don't Believe The Hype: Sex Does Not Weaken Legs originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 14:01:00 EST . Back in the day, that was either a sign that the kid would go into the NBA or head to a JUCO for two years, get his grades up, then head to a Division I program.

The problem now is that the NBA won't let high schoolers enter the draft and the NCAA is cracking down (a bit) on JUCO schools and grade point averages. This could be the best deal for a guy that can't get into an elite college program to show off his wares.

But is it really? Jennings is the anti-point guard in Europe. They like guys who facilitate a team, work the ball, play good defense and not be a scorer. While Jennings is an awesome passer, he is flashier than they tend to like and he's that scoring-type of lead guard.

Also, European teams aren't as down with playing youth that much. The Charlotte Bobcats just drafted Alexis Ajinca with the 20th pick in the draft a few nights ago ... and he doesn't get much playing time with his French team. NBA teams could be scared off by his lack of development and he plummets down the 2009 Draft.

It also reminds me of something else: Danny Ferry going to Italy in 1989.

Remember that Ferry was taken with the #2 pick in the NBA Draft by the LA Clippers. Ferry didn't want to be a Clipper, so he signed a contract in Italy to play for Il Messaggero. The Clips ended up dealing his draft rights to the Cleveland Cavaliers; Ferry came back over; and everyone went back about their business.

While Ferry got what he wanted (not being a Clipper) but the Clippers made out better in the deal (Ron Harper, two first-round picks). Ferry had a long career, but it wasn't a very distinguished one.

There was also "Rocket" Ishmail, who went to the Canadian Football League right out of Notre Dame and not into the NFL. He ended up coming back stateside, but never had a career worth writing about. There were also successful "alternatives" in the past ... but they mainly meant staying in the good ol' USofA (ABA, AFL, USFL).

Of course when Ferry went to Europe, clubs over there would break the bank for an American player. It isn't like that anymore. Leagues all over the world are filled with Americans now just as these leagues are developing their own stars. Euro leagues aren't going to bend over backwards for a one-and-done guy.

And if you think going off to college is a big adjustment, trying going to an entirely different country with language, cultural and basketball barriers. Will it be worth it to make a little bit of money now and give up on some a little bit later? If the next big high school star sees that it didn't work out for Jennings, may he be inclined to go the JUCO route instead?

As Sporting News' Mike DeCoursey also points out, it isn't like you get nothing from being a college player:
NCAA antagonists have convinced a generation of players their time in college basketball is uncompensated, but it's a lie. Beyond the education, living expenses and high-level training provided to all Division I basketball players, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony signed contracts with Nike worth a combined $81 million based on the reputations they gained in one college season each -- Durant as 2007 national player of the year, Anthony as 2003 NCAA Tournament most outstanding player. They became famous, and therefore their endorsements became valuable, because of college basketball. There would be precious little marketing appeal in a player who went from Oak Hill Academy to Europe.

He also points out that it may be better to just take the year off from basketball and work with an NBA-respected trainer and just get himself ready for the '09 draft.

No matter which way he leans, let this be a learning experience for all those that come after him. Sure, Europe is out there and it isn't completely dumb to play there. However, if you work a little harder in the classroom and practice taking entrance exams just as you do your jump shot, everything could end up working out as planned.
Brandon Jennings to Europe Will Be Ultimate Test Case For Future Prospects originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sat, 28 Jun 2008 11:25:00 EST . Mayo wanting to be a Wildcat, but then head coach Bob Huggins wouldn't take him.

Brad Underwood told the Konza Rotary Club this morning that Mayo was on the phone with Huggins, "begging to come here" around the time of national letter-of-intent signing day a year ago. Huggins told him no, Underwood said, because he thought Mayo would get in trouble because of money funneled to him and a friend prior to enrolling in college.
...
Mayo, originally from Huntington, W.Va., was among the top recruits in the nation at the time. Huggins, also originally from West Virginia, had been recruiting him for years and appeared to have a good shot at bringing him to K-State. Publicly, Mayo said he chose USC over K-State.

But Underwood today indicated that Mayo was saying up to the last minute that he wanted to come to K-State to be with Huggins because of their long ties. Huggins, though, said, "We're not going to take you. You'll never pass," in reference to NCAA amateur clearinghouse rules.

Who knows if this is true or not. The odds are Huggins won't admit one way or the other. Mayo will likely deny, just as he's denied everything else. Kind of hard to believe Huggins or any coach would turn down O.J. Mayo last year.
The popular story of how Mayo committed to USC involved and even told Coach Tim Floyd he would get some more players had some backing. Michael Beasley's mother told the story of O.J. Mayo seeking to get Beasley to switch his commitment to USC.

"He says, 'Ms. Beasley, I'm just calling to see if we can get Michael to come out to USC.' I say, 'Oh, no, sugar, no, sweetie pie, you need to come to Kansas State.' He's like, 'Ms. Beasley, we'll look out for Michael. I'll keep an eye out for him myself.'

"I say, 'O.J., you need someone to look out for you! Why don't you just come to Kansas State? It'll be a great team.' He says, 'We'll have a great team too.' I say, 'O.J., if you were having a great team you wouldn't be calling me at the 11th hour. Call Huggs. I'm sure he'll take you.' So I called Huggs and said, 'Hey, I just offered O.J. a scholarship. You got one? Dalonte [Hill], you got a scholarship?' They said, 'No, you're the one who offered him a scholarship!'"

Well, maybe Huggins did turn down Mayo. Or at least turned down Mrs. Smith's offer of a scholarship.

Really the whole thing is quite confusing. Mayo is very close friends with Bill Walker with whom he even roomed for a while in high school along with his AAU coach/guardian and possibly grandfather Dwaine Barnes.

It was Barnes who has a relationship with Huggins and not only steered Walker to Huggins and K-State, but wanted Mayo to go there as well. In another version of things, after Mayo followed Rodney Guillory's advice and chose USC, Barnes and Mayo had a falling out and did not speak (and in some great foreshadowing, Mayo's mother apparently had little trust for Guillory way before this year).

When it comes to trust, Mayo's mother says she doesn't have any for Guillory, her son's L.A. mentor. "Rodney kind of came in when O.J. was living in Cincinnati and I was back here," she says. "Lo and behold, there he was. I don't really know that much about him. I know what I hear, I know what I read and I know what O.J. tells me. But [Guillory] knows where I stand with him, too, because I've talked to him. You can't trust people you don't know. But if that's what O.J. wants to do, I don't want to put any extra stress on him."

With ties to Guillory and the Bill Duffy Associates severed at this point, though, it seems that Mayo has reunited with Barnes.

The Mayo camp really needs to issue a new scorecard to keep track of who is in and out of his posse these days.
What Did Bob Huggins Know About O.J. Currently, if the ball hits the backboard but is still going up (like on a layup), it can be touched and not ruled goaltending.

Doesn't seem like a major deal, but it will make those borderline calls much easier to make.

Also, the NCAA is looking at requiring making the home team wear white/light uniforms and the road team wearing dark uniforms ... or a switch if both teams agree. Currently, it was recommended but not required ... so you could have one team wearing orange and another wearing blue out on the court.

As of now, there are many proposals being discussed (including widening the free throw lane) but don't seem to have much support.

NCAA Looking at Goaltending Rule originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 13 May 2008 12:26:00 EST . Since this wasn't something the players had to attend and, well, unusual in nature, the NCAA says everything is cool.

Asked if the event had violated any NCAA rules, Erik Christianson, director of public and media relations for the NCAA, said in an e-mail: "This was a unique situation and not an NCAA issue. It certainly was a great opportunity for the student-athletes to interact with a presidential candidate."

Under NCAA rules, coaches are not allowed to watch pick-up games during the off-season. UNC spokesman Steve Kirschner said Williams knew that he wasn't supposed to be there under the letter of NCAA rules, but that these were "extraordinary circumstances," and with the number of secret service personnel on site, the coach wanted to be on hand to make sure that everything went OK."

Obama Scrimmages With UNC Tar Heels; But Did it Violate NCAA Rules? originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 30 Apr 2008 01:55:00 EST .
Aside from demonstrating that the University at Buffalo admits students who lack a grasp of basic grammar, the Facebook post has Robinson in hot water with the school, the Buffalo News reports.

Robinson, a shooting guard who was the team's leading scorer last season, has been suspended indefinitely from the team. The school's Office of the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education will determine whether there will be further discipline. The school also released the following statement from Robinson:

"I realize I made a mistake for which I take full responsibility and realize I must regain the trust of my teammates, fellow student-athletes and coaching staff. I have brought disappointment in myself and the university and for this I am truly sorry."
Somehow I think he had help writing that apology.
University at Buffalo Guard Suspended for 'Write My Paper' Facebook Ad originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 17:19:00 EST . Star of the basketball team about to make millions tends to have an intoxicating effect on the coeds.

Unless the coed has a boyfriend on the football team, that is. Playing second fiddle around school has to grate on the gridiron gang and when a guy like Rose comes sniffing around your girl, it's bound to raise your hackles. And, hackles raised, the football player is probably going to win if things escalate to a fight. Shame that it happened to Rose just before he was to go on camera and announce his move to the NBA.

Multiple sources close to the Memphis basketball and football programs have told CBSSports.com that Rose was recently involved in an altercation over a girl with Tiger football player Steven Black, an altercation that didn't go so well for Rose. Put another way, the possible No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft spent the early part of this week looking like a person who had just been in a scrap, making the way he announced his future plans -- through a release distributed by the Memphis Sports Information department -- convenient, if not necessary.

Black and Rose are both 6'3" but the footballer has about 30 pounds on him. A guy who dominates by pushing around smaller guards ain't gonna fare too well in that kind of fight. Even so, isn't Rose being a bit vain? As you can see above, we've seen him with a scrape or two before.

(H/T Sports by Brooks)
This Is Why Derrick Rose's Coaches Told Him To Keep His Hands Up on Defense originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST .
