Her name is on the athletic department's Wall of Fame, and on the basketball court at Reynolds Coliseum. Her photo still hangs in the women's basketball locker room.

"She was North Carolina State basketball, and you don't and you can't wipe that away with a new staff," said new N.C. State head coach Kellie Jolly Harper.

Harper is making one of the toughest transitions in college basketball this season. She is taking over the Wolfpack program, moving it in a new direction after the passing of Yow last January following a lengthy battle with breast cancer.

Yow fought bravely and publicly, her players and coaching staff rode the ups and downs of her treatment with her until her death. Stephanie Glance, Yow's assistant of 15 years took over the program until the end of the season and was the favorite of many who supported the program to take the job permanently.

But the administration was looking for a fresh start and Harper, who was a star guard at Tennessee under Pat Summitt and coached Western Carolina to two NCAA appearances in five seasons, was offered the job.

Harper said saying yes was not automatic.

"I made sure I did my homework," Harper said. "I had to talk to different people, to make sure I understood the landscape. Being a young coach, I did not want to jeopardize my future by putting myself in a bad situation. But after visiting the campus and talking to people and the players, I knew it was going to be a good situation."

Among those she talked to was her former coach, Summitt.

"It was important to me for her to have that confidence in me," Harper said. "Having her tell me that she thought it was a great fit for me and a great fit for N.C. State, that pushed it over the top for me."

Harper accepted the job and said she knew she had done the right thing when the North Carolina State coaches did their annual caravan around the state.

"I was 100 percent sure," Harper said.

Now comes the hard part, moving the program to a new place. Harper said her focus has been on the players.

"I can't imagine what those kids went through the last couple of years," Harper said. "Not only dealing with the loss of their head coach, but still trying to be student-athletes, with the uncertainty of the future of the program. There were so many things weighing on them."

The Wolfpack returns four starters and three seniors to the team that struggled to a 13-17 mark last season. Her starting lineup in Monday's exhibition game included junior Amber White, who missed last season with an Achilles tendon injury and sophomore Bonae Holston, who led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Harper, for her part, has worked hard to be visible and accessible, let the community in Raleigh get to know her better.

"I want to meet the fans, I want to get myself out in front of them," Harper said. "I want our program to be supported. I want them to step out and play in front of big crowds. I feel like they deserve that."

EXHIBITION FUN: The games that mean nothing have begun. Division I teams around the land playing an exhibition game or two before the real action begins next week.

That doesn't mean some of the scores aren't interesting.

For example, Tennessee defeated Cardinal Newman 124-34 a couple of days after Pat Summitt said her team has been overrated in the national polls. A 90-point win might not be a portend for the Final Four, but it certainly suggests that the Lady Vols have plenty of offensive game. Six players scored in double figures.

At one point in the first half, junior Angie Bjorklund had more points individually than Cardinal Newman had collectively as a team.

On the opposite coast, Oregon tried out its new fast-break offense under coach Paul Westhead and defeated Southern Oregon 109-47. Oregon got to triple digits without senior guard Taylor Lilley, who missed the game with an ankle injury.

Oregon hadn't hit double-digits on the scoreboard in any game -- exhibition or otherwise -- since 2005 and not at home since 1998.
Harper Filling Yow's Big Shoes at N.C. Aubry Boyd opened his eyes and welcomed the bright, 75-degree day with a wish he has repeated for the past 14 years.

"Every day I wake up hoping it's a better day than it was yesterday," Boyd told FanHouse. "I am not complaining because I am still here. I still want to be part of life."

Paralysis and a motorized wheelchair have not stolen Boyd's genuine love for vitality and people. He still talks hoops, politics, religion and women over cold suds and wings with the fellas. He still wants to make a difference.

Boyd's smile and personality -- continued sources of pleasure and inspiration -- were on display Tuesday night when the Florida State basketball program honored one of its own.

Boyd, 40, one of the most endearing basketball players ever to suit up for the Seminoles, was left a paraplegic after breaking the fourth vertebrate in his neck during a pickup tackle football game in his hometown of Macon, Ga., on Oct. 29, 1995.

Boyd was 26 years old.

It was a game among friends. There was a fumble on the fourth play. Boyd and another player dived simultaneously for the football. They collided and bumped heads. For a moment, Boyd thought he was fine despite a tingling sensation throughout his body. The other player got up, but Boyd remained on the ground.

Unable to move.

"I still don't ask why," Boyd said.

Boyd said it just happened. One day he could walk and run, the next day a steel halo used to immobilize a neck fracture was screwed into his skull.

He was alive and forever changed. Yet, it still beats the alternative.

"When you come to grips with it and realize you have to deal with it the rest of your life, you can't be afraid," Boyd said.

At 6-foot-6, Boyd was never afraid on the court, playing three positions during his career -- point guard, shooting guard and small forward.

Boyd was one of the first recruits in head coach Pat Kennedy's signing class at FSU in 1987. He appeared in 116 games during his four-year career and helped lead the Seminoles to the NCAA Tournament three of his four seasons.

Boyd loved to shoot the trey (55-of-178 his senior season in 1991) and hunker down on defense (he held USC guard Harold Miner to 16 points on 7-of-27 from the field in the NCAA tourney).

"We played against some good cats, too," Boyd smiled.

FSU was a member of the Metro Conference during Boyd's days, and he thoroughly enjoys reminiscing. There were the tussles against "Never Nervous" Pervis Ellison at Louisville, Wally Lancaster and Bimbo Coles at Virginia Tech, Clarence Weatherspoon at Southern Mississippi and Elliot Perry at Memphis.

The Seminoles could deal, too.

George McCloud was a first-round selection of the Indiana Pacers in 1989. Irving Thomas played a season with the L.A. Lakers. Charlie Ward made the game-winning shot in the Metro Conference Tournament Championship game over Louisville in 1991, and two years later led FSU's football program to its first national title and won the Heisman Trophy.

Boyd was team captain, team clown, and team rush chairman.

He was the life of any party and everyone's best friend, from the cooks at the dormitory that housed the basketball team to the students around him in class. Boyd was the player that FSU coaches designated to entertain visiting recruits. He was a role model, too, earning his bachelor's degree in child development in 1992.

Nobody wanted to leave when Boyd held court.

"Aubry's connection with people is just so unique," said Tom Carlson, a former FSU assistant coach during Boyd's career who is now a Senior Vice-President with Seminole Boosters, Inc.

That connection was evident Tuesday night, when Boyd received a warm ovation at halftime from fans who attended the Ninth Annual Aubry Boyd Charitable Foundation game at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

The Seminoles played an exhibition game against Delta State, and proceeds from the gate will be donated to the fund that helps with Boyd's living and medical expenses.

The foundation was started shortly after his accident in 1995 by Seminole supporters Bob and Mary O'Neil and is now monitored by FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton. The hope is that donations, which can be made to the Aubry Boyd Charitable Foundation, will continue to help ensure Boyd's future.

"Aubry's enthusiasm for life is something we try to teach to our players throughout their careers, " Hamilton said. "This gives us the opportunity to contribute to the quality of life of an individual who needs it."

Sure, there are days when Boyd is sad or depressed. Yet, he refuses to be a prisoner in that chair. He has a girlfriend. He watches youth and camp basketball games and would still love to coach one day. He travels to Macon, Ga., to visit his parents.

And the young man Boyd collided with on the playground that fateful afternoon? They've seen each other just twice -- the last time was many years ago -- but Boyd does not harbor any ill feelings.

"When I first saw him (after incident) I wasn't sure what to say; it was one of those surreal moments that's difficult to even describe how you feel," said former Seminole teammate Byron Wells, 39, a vice-president of operations for the Preferred Managing Agency Company in Tallahassee.

"But Aubry made it easy because of who he is and his personality. He's one of those guys who will talk you into the ground."

A disability can't measure the warmth and desire of a person's heart.

Boyd can be found at most FSU basketball games behind the bench or near the tunnel that leads into the Seminoles' locker room. He's not afraid to talk smack or show off the conference title bling he won at FSU.

The Seminoles are looking to produce an encore to last year's 25-win season and NCAA tournament appearance -- their first since 1998.

"He always reminds us to appreciate life, appreciate what you have and don't take anything for granted," said FSU senior forward Ryan Reid. "He tells us to make good use of our years here, and he's not afraid to throw in his two cents about how we need to play."

Monies raised over the years have helped purchase and modify a van and a Tallahassee apartment for Boyd's special needs. Through rehabilitation, Boyd has feeling back in his right leg, and limited movement in his arms, specifically his right arm, and hands.

"Like anyone put in that chair in his situation, he wants to be able to walk once again, especially when you see the technology that has come out," said William Lester, a former basketball player from Augusta, Ga., who befriended Boyd when the two met more than 20 years ago.

"But he understands that God has done this for a reason for him and he has learned to live with his disability. Now, he's comfortable with the rest of society. When you are around him, you quickly realize he's the same ol' Aubry."

The injury stole the movement from Boyd's body.

It did not steal his spirit.

And he continues to greet each day with a simple wish:

Hoping that today is better than yesterday.

The biggest issue: there is too much room left for the wrong interpretation.

"If you dunk on someone or whatever -- that's just someone's game. They take pride in it, "insisted Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney. "They don't mean to disrespect people, but that's sometimes how it comes out.

"I think they should have done a survey with the players, asked us for our input,'' he added. "We're the ones playing, and they wouldn't know how we feel about it unless they ask us. They wouldn't know how it affects how we play if they don't ask how we feel."

Said Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez -- formally voted by the media as preseason first-team all-ACC, and informally picked as the player most constrained by the new rule -- "What if you dunk on someone, and it's a crazy dunk, and you can't keep the emotions inside of you? I guess that's what they want us to do. But, that's why they have rules.''

Not even a coach's reputation as "old school'' kept him from being perplexed by the new rules, which call for a technical if an official -- at his discretion -- deems a player's actions as over the line.

"That's why college basketball is a great game, because of that exuberance,'' Maryland coach Gary Williams said, adding that there is a distinct difference between celebration and taunting. "These are 18-and-22-year-old kids who have grown up playing a certain way. It may not be the way I grew up playing it, but it's a great way to play.

"And I hope nobody gets penalized for making a great play and being penalized for it. You've seen it in football already,'' he added. "Hopefully, nobody loses a game over something like that.''

Williams was referring to the infamous "excessive celebration'' football penalty that essentially cost Georgia a victory over LSU earlier this month, a mistake the Southeastern Conference later had to admit to and for which the officiating crew was suspended. Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt also recalled that play, and laughed when asked about the new basketball rule.

"You always teach your players to respect the game, so I think it's important that you're serious about that -- but I'm smiling, because you're putting a lot on the officials,'' Hewitt said. "They're officiating the best athletes in college sports ... This is just another thing you're piling on their plates.''

The taunting rule is one of a handful of changes or areas of emphasis to be put into play this season. There now will be a specific blocking-charging area under the basket, but one that will not be marked by a line as in the NBA. Also, the use of replay will be expanded to determine whether certain fouls are called flagrant, intentional or technicals; three-seconds will be scrutinized more; excessively swinging elbows by a player with the ball will be subject to flagrant fouls; the choices coaches have in picking a replacement foul shooter when the fouled player is injured were narrowed, and distracting free-throw shooters once they are at the line was outlawed.

Even as he was explaining the new taunting rules, ACC officiating supervisor John Clougherty admitted that the Georgia-LSU situation "went too far.'' On the other hand, he said, the basketball officials would now have wide latitude on calling, for example, pointing at an opponent or standing over him after a dunk, flexing muscles, posing, speaking or gesturing to him.

The players would have to walk a fine line between celebrating with teammates and inspiring a home crowd, Clougherty said, and acting unsportsmanlike. As a guide, he said, "Act like you've been there, don't embarrass your opponent.''

Coaches and players don't mind the obvious unsportsmanlike acts being whistled, but they said there are too many that are being confused with normal expressions of excitement. With those, they said, there's no good reason to halt them anyway.

"You're not doing anything wrong, you're just showing the love of the game,'' Williams said. "It doesn't bother me. Obviously it bothers some people ... This is the 2009-2010 season. We're not playing in the 1960s, where everybody wears a crew cut.''

One of the few players who believed it would not alter how he plays was North Carolina forward Deon Thompson: "Not with our team. Our coaches don't like when our team dunks in a guy's face and taunts him -- he doesn't like that,'' meaning head coach Roy Williams.

Hewitt pointed out that with the way players grow up playing ball nowadays, traveling all over the country and building friendships in competition that continue as they move to differing college teams, what might look like trash-talk might be a completely innocent exchange between long-time acquaintances. "I don't think that was considered when they put this in,'' Hewitt said, adding that it would not have hurt for coaches as well as players to be "consulted'' on such a move.

Ironically, Thompson has such a bond with Clemson's Trevor Booker, a teammate on the United States' under-19 World University Games squad in Belgrade last summer; Booker, also a preseason all-ACC pick, boasted of what he and his team would do to Thompson's Tar Heels, and said of the rule, "That's a big one for me; I like showing my emotions ... They have to let you get your crowd into it.''

North Carolina, the defending regular-season and NCAA champs, and Duke, winners of last year's ACC tournament, tied for first in the preseason voting, the first time there has been a tie in 41 years of media voting. Duke's Kyle Singler was chosen player of the year and was joined on the all-conference first team by Vasquez, Booker, Delaney and North Carolina's Ed Davis. Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors was the overwhelming pick for rookie of the year.

The 2012 tournament, already awarded to Atlanta, will be played in Philips Arena rather than the Georgia Dome, the site the last two times the city hosted it, conference officials announced. The two preceding it and the three following it will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum.
ACC Players, Coaches Wag Finger at New Taunting Rule originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sun, 25 Oct 2009 22:30:00 EST . It wasn't hard to figure out where his inspiration came from.

"I'd like to thank all the fans who are here tonight, all across the country, who stayed with us last year,'' he said. "Last year was one of the great experiences I've ever had as a coach.''

Staying with the Terrapins in 2008-09 was a challenge, especially after a contentious midseason stretch that featured a surprise home loss to Morgan State, a 41-point humiliation at Duke, Williams' public feud with athletic department officials, and an impromptu appearance at a subsequent Williams press conference by athletic director Debbie Yow so she could give him a vote of confidence.

But the reward was great: Maryland reversed direction, defeated eventual national champion North Carolina, upset Wake Forest on the way to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament semifinals and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament to cap a 21-14 season that was more satisfying to Williams than the record would indicate.

Throughout the final weeks and the postseason run, Williams circled the wagons, instilled a us-versus-them mentality and pulled off a coaching job that ranks with his 2002 national championship, considering the hole his team climbed from.

As toned-down as the event was this year compared to past extravaganzas -- no Gary Williams look-a-like contests, no dance routines by players, no theatrical entrance by the coach, who once rode in on a motorcycle -- Friday was a night to celebrate that improbable turnaround and to acknowledge expectations for more. It was the debut in uniform for the Terps' two highly-touted freshman inside players, 6-8 James Padgett of Brooklyn and 6-10 Jordan Williams of Torrington, Conn.

Besides being blue-chippers who fill a major need and could potentially vault the Terps into the national rankings, they are the answers to the tough questions Gary Williams has faced in recent years, when critics of the team zeroed in on his recruiting as the reason it missed the NCAA tournament three times in four years before last season.

Padgett and Williams received loud welcomes from the fans on hand, although the biggest cheers were for senior all-ACC guard Greivis Vasquez, who spoke to the crowd and echoed his coach's promise that "nobody will work harder than us.''

Added Gary Williams -- who gave his customary fist-pump to the crowd that chanted his name as he took the floor -- "People ask us if the high expectations worry you. We want high expectations. Bring them on. We'll take those expectations and go play.''

Besides the additions of the two post players, Williams was also buoyed last month by an additional year added to his contract after he met performance and academic incentives, locking him in through the 2012-13 season -- when he would turn 68 and complete his 24th season coaching at his alma mater. He also pointed with pride, in his on-court remarks, to Maryland being ranked as the ninth-best program in college basketball in the past decade by Lindy's magazine.

Maryland's regular season opener is against Charleston Southern Nov. 13 at Comcast Center. The Terps play in the Maui Invitational the week of Thanksgiving and meet Indiana and Villanova in non-conference games before their ACC opener against Florida State at home Jan. 10.
Gary Williams Feels Vindicated as Maryland Tips Off originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sat, 17 Oct 2009 12:21:00 EST . Forget that their contract specified that it was and either/or situation at the discretion of the organizers, they were taking a stand against being "bullied." They were standing up for the "little guys" in college basketball.

Yeah. So much for that. It's now about the greater good of the Coaches vs. Cancer charity that the tournament supports.

"We are honored to play against North Carolina, the defending national champions," Thomas said. "We are happy to participate in the cause and we are proud to be invited and want to help promote the American Cancer Society in any way we can."

Right. More likely it was the realization that they were locked into the contract. To say nothing of the fact that if they pulled out, they would also lose the three home games in late November that also came with the deal. Games they would have no chance to replace at this point.
FIU Now Happy to Play UNC originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 23:34:00 EST . They are threatening to pull out of the 2K Sports Classic Tournament, which benefits the Coaches vs. Cancer charity, because they are no longer slated to be the road patsy for Ohio State. Instead they are getting sent to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina.

The Golden Panthers had agreed to play in the preseason tournament even before Isiah Thomas was hired as the head coach. It had been presumed that they would go to Columbus to play the Buckeyes. Ohio State had indicated on its Web site that FIU would be the opponent. FIU and Thomas referenced starting the season there.

Last week, though, the Gazelle Group which operates the tournament contacted FIU about being switched. FIU's athletic director Pete Garcia refused, but he really did not have a choice. The contract FIU signed stated that FIU would play either North Carolina or Ohio state at the sole discretion of the Gazelle Group. Somehow that does not seem fair to FIU.

"Would they do what they're doing to us to Duke, or to North Carolina? No," Garcia said. "But they'll do it to FIU and any other school out there like FIU."

Hello? You are the patsy school that has to go on the road in this tournament, and expected to lose to the bigger program. You get some nice national exposure on ESPN and a check for the beating -- something nearly "any other school out there like FIU" would love to get. You are FIU. You are one of the worst programs in the country. Most people cannot keep you straight with Florida Atlantic. Of course they would treat you this way and not like a prestigious, brand-name program.

There is no principle to this. They signed a contract that is clear. Maybe they were hoping for a lighter beating from Ohio State rather than North Carolina, but that is not principle. That is whining. Clearly FIU's athletic director (and probably the coach) does not understand that a glamor hire does not elevate FIU beyond novelty act until they actually win something.
FIU Upset Over Having to Play UNC originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Tue, 25 Aug 2009 22:40:00 EST . "He has all of the requirements as far as credits. He did real well on the entrance exams."

For Duke, which is returning just scholarship guards from a team plagued by point guard trouble last season, Dawkins can't get on campus fast enough.
Rising sophomore Elliot Williams, who emerged as one of the team's most dynamic players in the second half of the season, transferred out of the program in June, while guard-forward Gerald Henderson left behind a year of eligibility to enter the NBA. Seth Curry, brother of ex-Davdison star Stephen Curry transferred in from Liberty, but must sit out until the fall of 2010, leaving Duke with just Nolan Smith, Jon Scheyer to fill out the guard rotation. (In fact, after the departure of Williams, head coach Mike Krzyzewski had as many former scholarship guards coaching on his bench -- both assistants Steve Wojciechowski and Chris Collins played for the Blue Devils -- as he did playing in front of it.)

Dawkins could fill the athletic void left by Williams and, one of the best outside shooters in his class, should help shore up a thin perimeter that slumped badly against Villanova in the Blue Devils' Sweet 16 loss.

But getting him on campus this fall isn't guaranteed. Dawkins has already completed four years of high school -- he transferred from a public school to Atlantic Shores Christian Academy after his freshman year and repeated his freshman year for basketball reasons -- but remains one class short of graduation, according to the Daily Press.

Dawkins will still have to be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

If the shooting guard does enroll this fall, Dawkins will join an already solid recruiting class for the Blue Devils, that includes McDonald's All-Americans Ryan Kelly, a 6-foot-10 face-up threat, and Mason Plumlee (6-11, 220), an athletic, if not physically dominant, forward.
Duke May Add Star Guard Andre Dawkins 1 Year Ahead of Schedule originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 13:05:00 EST . Spears.

Krzyzewski, a former captain in the U.S. Army and coach at West Point, called the job the "ultimate honor" when he was originally named to the position in October, 2005, and quickly set about revamping Team USA's image, following disappointing finishes at the world championships in 2002 and the Olympics in 2004. Krzyzewski finished the Olympic cycle with a 36-1 record in international competition and a host of gold medals draped around his neck after Team USA defeated Spain in the final game in Beijing.

Team USA chariman Jerry Colangelo had expected to name a coach in the fall, but is now expected to officially name Krzyzewski at a press conference July 20 or 21.

"With the success that we had, I would do everything in my power to keep everything intact," Colangelo told The Associated Press.

"I'm a strong believer in not upsetting the apple cart."

Krzyzewski's return may also help retain the USA's top players for the London Games, including Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. (Can a Krzyzewski puppet be far behind?)

"[Krzyzewski] is everything I thought he would be and more," Bryant said in an interview with Duke Sports Information in 2007. "I have been excited and waiting for this opportunity for a long time. Playing for him now, you realize why he is such a great coach."

For Krzyzewski, who has won three national titles and is on pace to break former mentor Bob Knight's all-time men's Division I coaching victories mark, the commitment will require more time away from the Blue Devils, a program that's lost some of its postseason luster during Krzyzewski's commitment to the Olympic program. Since Krzyzewski was named coach before the 2006 college basketball season, Duke is just 5-4 in the NCAA tournament, and hasn't advanced past the Sweet 16.

Krzyzewski would be the first to lead Team USA in successive Olympics since Henry Iba in 1964, 1968 and 1972 and could match Iba as the only coach to win two gold medals.
London Calling Mike Krzyzewski in 2012 originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 08 Jul 2009 10:00:00 EST . Plenty of underclassmen had already made decisions to not even test the waters (Willie Warren, Oklahoma) or previously decided to return (Patrick Patterson, Kentucky). Still, plenty of others never looked back by hiring an agent right away (Earl Clark, Louisville).

The focus is strictly on the players that took it up until this weekend or even right under the wire Monday afternoon. Before getting to the programs that "won" and "lost" with the decisions to stay or go there are two teams that have counter-intuitive situations.

LOSER THAT ACTUALLY WINS

Kentucky. Losing a Jodie Meeks-caliber player is not a good thing for most teams. It does, however free up shots, which is something the Wildcats will need. While Meeks took a huge leap in productivity last season and was reportedly a great teammate, he also averaged over 15 shots per game. Patrick Patterson returning to join a class that includes DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton, John Wall, Eric Bledsoe and Jon Hood gives the Wildcats' offense huge potential. The additional bonus is that it takes a smidgen of pressure off of preseason hype for Kentucky and coach John Calipari.

WINNER THAT ACTUALLY LOSES

UConn. The Huskies are facing an NCAA investigation into the recruitment of Nate Miles and Ator Majok along with the UConn coaches' relationship with a former student manager, former personal assistant to Rip Hamilton and wannabe agent in Josh Nochisom. Miles never played a minute for UConn and has hired an agent to pursue his career far away from NCAA investigators. Majok, though, is remaining a student-athlete and will be required to answer questions from the NCAA (assuming they get around to asking before he declares once more). The potential is there for Majok never to get a minute with the Huskies plus the harm to UConn's program is very real.

WINNERS

Notre Dame -- Luke Harangody returns for his senior year with a great chance to finish as the program's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. This is good news for a team that will be in need of giving fans a reason to watch in a rebuilding season following a season of disappointment.

Maryland -- The decision by Greivis Vasquez to come back was mildly surprising. Not that he was likely to be drafted, but the rumors were swirling that Vasquez just wanted to go pro, whether it was in the NBA, Europe or in South America.

South Carolina -- Second-year coach Darrin Horn gets a nice present as Devan Downey decides to return for his final year. He had to sit out a year after transferring from Cincinnati, so this is a bonus. Dominique Archie returning was less of a surprise, but important to the Gamecocks hopes in 2009.

LSU -- The return of Tasmin Mitchell should not have been a surprise, but he took his time coming to his senses.

Tennessee -- The SEC seems to be jumping from joke back to power in just one season. It's not just Calipari to Kentucky, the conference has now has some depth. Tyler Smith's return will help keep Tennessee from slipping further.

Villanova -- The return of Scottie Reynolds does not make the team more of a threat in terms of talent. There is plenty of that in the Wildcats backcourt. Reynolds, though, provides serious leadership and a guy you want to take the last shot in a game.

Arizona -- This was quite the turnaround from the end of the season, when the coaching search seemed to be a mess. No recruits coming in, and plenty of early departures. Nic Wise deciding he would return, though, provides a senior leader for coach Sean Miller.

Texas -- Damion James' return was a real surprise. He seemed determined to go pro after seeing D.J. Augustin leave early and A.J. Abrams graduate. James provides stability on the wing and should benefit from Florida transfer Jai Lucas running the point with McDonald's All-American shooting guard, Avery Bradley helping to spread the floor.

Georgia Tech -- Paul Hewitt is well respected. He has a Final Four appearance. He is a tremendous recruiter. But he also has had little success the last few years. That could change. Gani Lawal could not get a first-round guarantee, so the sophomore returns.

LOSERS

St. Mary's -- Patty Mills' decision to stay in the draft should not have been a surprise. If he had not missed a good chunk of the season injured, there would have been no doubt. The longer he took to decide, though, created hope that he might come back and lead the Gaels to dethroning Gonzaga.

Gonzaga -- Every scout and GM, armchair and real, has been aware at how soft and thin Austin Daye is. They practically marvel over it. He is the personification of the terms "project" and "potential upside." He will get drafted somewhere at the end of the first round or the beginning of the second and disappear for a few years maybe to re-emerge down the road. Gonzaga, meanwhile loses a big plug in the middle, and may actually be vulnerable in the WCC.

USC -- No one expected DeMar DeRozan, Daniel Hackett or Taj Gibson to return, it only became more obvious after Tim Floyd's sudden loss of energy to coach.

Wake Forest -- Not really a surprise Jeff Teague decided to make it official. He and James Johnson had started looking to the NBA Draft sometime in February.

Texas A&M -- As nice, and unsurprising, as it was to get Donald Sloan and Bryan Davis back for their senior year, it was a big blow to lose the blossoming big man Chinemelu Elonu. Especially after sportswriters in Texas had finally learned to spell his name without double checking the Aggie media guide.
Draft Deadline Decisions: Team Winners and Losers originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 21:54:00 EST . We'll attempt to order the top 25 current coaches in the nation. This is about the present and the future, not the distant past. What a guy did in the mid-90s doesn't matter near as much as the direction his program is currently headed. Past pedigree also matters, to an extent. For the perfect mix of past accomplishments with present achievement and a paved road for future success, look no further than the man atop the list.

The Untouchables

1. Roy Williams, North Carolina -- There are plenty of guys who could out X-and-O him during a game. Of course, he pretty much always has incredibly superior talent on the court, rendering that part of the coaching skill-set less meaningful. Recruiting is part of the job in college basketball, and he's done it well enough to amass two NCAA championships, three Final Fours and four 30-plus win seasons in the past five years. Until someone starts outdoing him on the recruiting trail and keeping those guys in school for more than a year, he'll stay here for a while.

2. Tom Izzo, Michigan State -- He reached his fifth Final Four last season, finishing as the runner-up to Roy's Tar Heels. In 2010, Izzo's Spartans will be cutting down the nets (yes, an incredibly early prediction). He's mixing youth with experience every single year, and that's why this program won't leave the national spotlight as long as he's around.

3. Mike Krzyzewski, Duke -- If this was any year from 1990 to 2001, he'd be the obvious choice for the best coach in the entire nation. In the past eight seasons, however, he's been slightly mortal -- advancing past the Sweet 16 just once. Of course, when we're talking about a guy going to the Sweet 16 six times and the Final Four once in an eight-year span -- and talking about how it hurts his overall resume -- that shows you what kind of bar he set for himself. He's still a legend, he's just being outperformed on Tobacco Road right now.

4. John Calipari, Kentucky -- There will be plenty of naysayers for the foreseeable future when it comes to "Coach Cal" and his "recruiting practices" -- especially in light of recent events. There's a sort of stigma following him around because he's arguably the best recruiter in the nation, but he's never been personally charged with anything concrete. The bottom line is that he's getting the job done and now his national platform is even bigger at one of the NCAA's marquee basketball programs. He's still looking for that elusive first national championship, but the smart money is on that drought ending rather quickly in Lexington (assuming he keeps his nose clean).

5. Bill Self, Kansas -- He's taken three different schools (including Tulsa) to the Elite Eight. He did so in his first year at Kansas. After a decent 2004-2005 season, Self built the team as his own, steadily improving over the next four seasons. Things culminated in 2008 when he did what Williams couldn't do at Kansas, which is win the National Championship. After significant losses to graduation and the NBA, the Jayhawks were in rebuilding mode last season, but it turned out to be reloading. A three-seed and Sweet 16 berth later, and Kansas is set up for another Final Four run. Expect that to be an annual statement about Self's Kansas squad for the foreseeable future.

6. Jim Calhoun, Connecticut -- He's got plenty of longevity, but he's likely not going anywhere, if his health and a possible NCAA inquiry allow, and neither are his Huskies. Though they're only losing Hasheem Thabeet and A.J. Price from a Final Four team, they have enough to pick up the pieces and make another deep run in March (if they make it, it will be Calhoun's ninth trip to the Elite Eight). Calhoun always does.

7. Rick Pitino, Louisville -- A Final Four and two Elite Eights in the past five years for Pitino, but he doesn't seem to have the national championship magic in Louisville. Plus, the addition of Calipari to UK will greatly cramp Pitino's recruiting within the basketball rich State of Kentucky. Don't get me wrong, though, Pitino is still ranked seventh on this list and in the prestigious "untouchables" category. He belongs.

Quasi-Elite

8. Billy Donovan, Florida -- He's lost tons of ground in the past two years. In fact, had we built this list after the two consecutive championships, he probably would have been ranked as the top overall coach in the nation. That doesn't just go away after two NCAA tournament-less seasons, but he's got something to prove now. Can he actually sustain success, or is everything dependent on landing one special recruiting class?

9. Ben Howland, UCLA -- Three straight Final Four appearances for the Bruins didn't yield a championship, though, and he took a step backward in 2009. If you look at his resume, though, there's no reason to doubt the direction of college basketball's most championship-laden program. Howland made Pitt into a powerhouse by his third season and built UCLA back into one -- making the Final Four in his third season. They'll be back.

10. Jim Boeheim, Syracuse -- The 14 Sweet 16 appearances, three national championship games and the one championship are all part of his incredibly lofty standing among historical collegiate coaching greats. Presently, he did take his 2009 group to the Sweet 16 after back-to-back trips to the NIT. He's enduring massive losses to graduation and the draft, though, so he'll have yet another reloading task in front of him. His name is keeping him here and he's likely to continue falling down the list as some of the younger talent trumps him. See the next guy on the list ...

Solid As a Rock

11. Jay Wright, Villanova -- After taking Hofstra to two consecutive NCAA tournament berths, Wright took his talents to Philly at age 40. He built the program for three years and it's been coming to fruition for the past five seasons. He's taken the Wildcats to four Sweet 16s in the past five years, and made a Final Four trip last season. It was the first for 'Nova since the magical 1985 run. They won't have to wait long for another one, because they'll be there again in 2010.

12. Tubby Smith, Minnesota -- He's gone to the Sweet 16 with three different schools and it's soon to be four [edit: originally said four and five, we regret the error] when he completes his rescue of the Gophers from the abyss. Six Sweet 16 appearances and a national championship in 10 years at Kentucky wasn't good enough for the die-hards in Lexington, but I'm pretty sure they'd deal with it in the Twin Cities. It would be awfully tough to win it all from up there, but the Gophers are on track to becoming a team who can occasionally visit the Sweet 16 and perhaps more.

13. Rick Barnes, Texas -- Texas will always be a football school, but Barnes does a heck of a job keeping the Longhorn faithful interested in hoops as well. The 2003 Final Four was nice, and they've been in the Elite Eight twice in the past four years. Heading into this year, they have some serious horses. Look for them to linger around the top 10.

14. Matt Painter, Purdue -- In my view, he's the most likely to jump up a level from this group in the next few years. I also expect this pick to receive the most scrutiny. So, here goes: Purdue has Final Four talent as they head into the 2009-2010 season. Should they make it, his resume will be as impressive as almost anyone at such a young age (he's only 38). In just four years he's transformed Purdue from a Big Ten doormat (3-13 in conference play his first season) to a legitimate national power. Maybe people outside Indiana (the State) don't realize what a joke Purdue basketball had become until he came in and played the role of savior. As beloved as Gene Keady was in Purdue, he never made it past the Elite Eight. Painter will get there before the age of 40. He's the most underrated coach in college basketball. His only other head coaching experience? A single season of domination in the Missouri Valley Conference (17-1 in 2004 conference play for Southern Illinois). [Then again, maybe I'm trying some reverse-jinxing action -- being an Indiana grad.]

15. Gary Williams, Maryland -- It's tough to argue with his past accolades, but I'm seeing three NIT appearances and two second-round exits from the Big Dance in the last five years. This is a list of coaching in the present, not the past. He'll continue to slide from what was once probably a top-5 rank if he doesn't show more potential with the future of the Maryland program.

16. Thad Matta, Ohio State -- He's a much better recruiter than on-court coach, but, again, recruiting is part of coaching in college basketball. He took Ohio State to the national title game in only his third season, yet they've been a tad bit disappointing since. Next year's Buckeyes do look to be very dangerous, especially with the return of David Lighty from injury. His worst season in three different stops still netted 20 wins overall wins.

17. Jamie Dixon, Pittsburgh -- The big knock on Dixon has been his lack of tournament success. He did make the Elite Eight this year, but the Panthers never really got on track against inferior competition from their number one seed and eventually lost to a three seed. He's only 43, though, and has built a maintained a solid program after the departure of Howland. There's upward mobility here should he get over the hump in the next few years.

18. Bo Ryan, Wisconsin -- His regular season resume is impressive enough to land him higher on the list, but he hasn't had any serious tournament runs and it doesn't appear that's changing anytime soon. One thing I love hearing about him is how he gets so much out of limited talent. Well, first of all, he's had some talent. Secondly, recruiting talent is part of your job in collegiate sports. This isn't the NBA where he's saddled with an awful general manager. All that being said, he's a great coach and deserves a top-20 spot. He just seems a bit overrated to me at times in the eyes of the national media.

19. Bruce Weber, Illinois -- Built Southern Illinois' program into a regular Big Dance attendee before steering the Illini to a National Championship game appearance. After a drastic step-back (losing overall record in 2007-2008, which single-handedly knocked him down several ranking slots here), Weber coached an unheralded team to an impressive 24-10 campaign last season. The 2005 National Coach of the Year looks to continue building his reputation with a solid nucleus in place -- along with talented newcomers -- moving into the 2009-2010 season.

Rounding It Out

20. Bob Huggins, West Virginia -- We have to include him, because he wins games everywhere he goes -- and he wins immediately. He's not higher on the list, though, because there seems to be a glass ceiling in place at this point. His only trip to the Final Four was the last time Bob Knight made a trip and he doesn't appear to be in position to crack the top 5 in the Big East anytime soon. Still, he's going to win 20 and visit the NCAAs. That's clockwork.

21. Mark Few, Gonzaga -- He absolutely owns the WCC -- nine straight conference titles -- and has had decent-to-good success in the NCAA Tournament. At some point, though, the four Sweet 16s in 10 seasons need to turn into something more. Otherwise Few's just a very good coach dominating a sub-par conference. He actually may need to take his show elsewhere to shed that label, but the question is: Why would he? He's set up nicely there and won't get fired.

22. Bruce Pearl, Tennessee -- After making UW-Milwaukee relevant, Pearl took the Tennessee job and immediately thrust them into national prominence. The Vols took a step backward in 2009 after a 31-win season and two straight Sweet 16 appearances. Should Tyler Smith decide to come back -- he's filed paperwork for the NBA draft but not hired an agent and will also consider playing overseas -- they'll be headed back that way in 2010. If not, they still return everyone else and will still be in the NCAA Tourney mix as usual.

23. John Beilein, Michigan -- Talking about working your way through the ranks. He's been to Erie Community College, Nazareth College, Le Moyne College, Canisius, Richmond, West Virginia and now Michigan. After just one bad season in Ann Arbor, Beilein gave Wolverines hope they could once again cheer for a respectable basketball program. Considering DeShawn Sims and Manny Harris are coming back, the Wolverines have a nice shot at a Sweet 16 this year, which would be the third in the past six seasons for the late-blooming Beilein.

24. Lon Kruger, UNLV -- While Kruger's successors have had more success than he has (Donovan at Florida, Self and Weber at Illinois), he's still pretty adept at building winning programs. He took UNLV to the Sweet 16 in his third season and has been to the NCAA Tournament two of the past three years with the Runnin' Rebels. If he wants one, he'll probably get a crack at another major job soon.

25. Al Skinner, Boston College -- It's gotta be awfully tough to keep Boston College competitive in ACC basketball when measuring up against Duke, North Carolina, Maryland and others. BC is a football school, after all. Skinner's had his Eagles in the NCAA Tourney seven of the last nine seasons. Despite the loss of Tyrese Rice to graduation, they'll look to improve next season with the rest of the young nucleus returning.

Up-and-Comers

Here are some guys who might possibly be better coaches than several currently on the list. Some of them will need to prove it for a few more years, and others have circumstances they'll need to fight through in order to stick (Crean's Indiana mess, Bennett moving to the ACC from Pac-10, Capel needing to show he can win without Griffin, etc.).

[ordered alphabetically]

Mike Anderson, Missouri -- After winning 20-plus games all four seasons at UAB, Anderson undertook the massive task of cleaning up the Quin Snyder fiasco for Mizzou. Last season, just his third at the helm for the Tigers, saw Anderson lead his team to the Elite Eight. If things continue on this path, they'll have themselves quite the program.

Tony Bennett, Virginia -- Moving from the Pac-10 to the ACC is no simple task. Plus, he's now going to be also competing with the Big East for regional recruits.

Jeff Capel, Oklahoma -- As mentioned above, it's entirely possible he's not a great coach and just was fortunate enough to land the beast that was Blake Griffin. It's also possible he keeps landing beasts due to great recruiting, which would qualify him for the above rankings. Time will tell, but it appears Oklahoma has a quality coach.

Tom Crean, Indiana -- Had he stayed at Marquette he'd easily qualify for the rankings above Skinner and Beilein (at least), but what he's able to carve out at Indiana from this point forward will make or break his legacy. Thus, it's not really fair to put him near the same level as Big Ten counterparts like Ryan or Weber just yet. It's possible he gets all the way up to the top of this list, but it's also possible he's never able to overcome the significant hole dug by Kelvin Sampson -- in which case he'd fall off this list completely.

Keno Davis, Providence -- One stellar year at Drake was followed by a pretty solid season at Providence in the uber-competitive Big East. At age 37, he's a true rising star in the coaching business.

Travis Ford, Oklahoma State -- From Campbellsville to Eastern Kentucky to UMass to Oklahoma State, the former Kentucky point guard has risen through the coaching ranks from the bottom up. His first season as head coach of the Cowboys yielded a 23-12 record and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tourney.

Anthony Grant, Alabama -- Two NCAA appearances in three years at Virginia Commonwealth got this rising star the exposure needed to land the head coaching job for the Crimson Tide.

Trent Johnson, LSU -- After making Nevada relevant, he built Stanford as his own team in four years -- making a Sweet 16 in Year 4 -- and won the SEC in his first year in Baton Rouge. If this is his destination job, the Tigers have a program on the rise.

Chris Lowery, Southern Illinois -- His first three seasons were a cakewalk. Three Big Dances, two times advancing past the first round and one Sweet 16. The Salukies regressed to the 18-15 next season and all the way down to 13-17 last season. Did Lowery simply enjoy success due to the foundation built by Bruce Weber and Matt Painter, or is he suffering through a simple down-cycle that will be reversed in the near-future?

Sean Miller, Arizona -- It's time for the 40-year-old coaching phenom to take the next step. In five seasons at Xavier, Miller put together a 120-47 record with two Sweet 16s and one Elite Eight trip. Now, he's moving to a "power" conference across the nation. Fans will expect he maintain a top-10 program, so we'll see if he can meet expectations.

Mike Montgomery, California -- Wait, what? He's like a thousand years old, so how is he here? Because he hadn't coached in the college ranks since 2004 until last season. He had a good re-entry into the coaching ranks, but we need to see it sustained. It's not like he had a John Wooden-like resume before getting back into the swing of things.

Brad Stevens, Butler -- The 32-year-old Stevens learned the Butler ropes under both Thad Matta and Todd Lickliter. Since grabbing the head job, he's gone 56-10 in two seasons -- qualifying for the NCAA tournament both times. The Bulldogs should be even better this season than they were in 2008-2009, too.

***

It's tough to really hammer out a list with specific criteria and stick with it. For example, you could argue Roy Williams isn't as good a coach as Self because he couldn't win in Kansas while Self could. Then you could follow that up with Weber going to the Final Four at the helm for Illinois when Self couldn't get past the Sweet 16 round for the Illini. Weber, though, went 16-19 in 2007-2008 and Huggins hasn't had a losing record since 1985. All in all, there will always be reasons to say one coach is better than another.

This was simply meant to be a summer topic for arguing about college hoops while we wait out the offseason. You should also be able to find my early early early Final Four picks for 2010, though that's a different topic for a different day.
College Basketball's Top 25 Coaches originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 03 Jun 2009 18:00:00 EST . He represents a segment of his profession that could squeeze inside a foul lane.

Duplicity and college basketball are now one. I mean, if you name a program that has acquired a bigger-than-life player in recent years (Memphis and Southern Cal come to mind), it's like this: The odds are greater than Dick Vitale screaming into a microphone that such a program is destined for the NCAA slammer.

Hewitt disagrees. For one, he is high profile as president of the Black Coaches and Administrators and as a veteran of the Atlantic Coast Conference. So if he decided to shove a few of his peers under the bus, others would roll the wheels back and forth across his tongue.

Still, he believes what he says regarding, not only this new SAT flap involving former Memphis star Derrick Rose and possible NCAA violations, but other silliness in his sport that keeps dribbling into view.

You have the O.J. Mayo mess at Southern Cal, where Trojans coach Tim Floyd allegedly was his star player's ATM machine. You have Kelvin Sampson's addiction to cell phones at Oklahoma and later at Indiana. You have that mysteriously high jump between test scores for Brandon Jennings during his attempt to attend Arizona. (That was before he ran a fast break from high school to the European League.) You have the allegations of UConn folks using illegal means to acquire a player who was so troubled that he attended five high schools in four states.

You also have Hewitt trying to put things into perspective.

"There are going to be more and more cases where we find out that a player was involved in something that broke an NCAA rule and that the person behind that probably doesn't work for that institution -- and probably has no interest in that young man getting an education, but yet the blame will be thrown at the feet of the coach," said Hewitt, over the phone Thursday from Indianapolis, where the BCA is holding its annual convention and expo. "There's going to be people out there robbing the banks. But there's also going to be people out there driving by and having somebody jump in their car and say, 'Go,' and it's going to be like, 'What's going on?,' and they all get arrested.

"If three out of 10 coaches are caught up in something, I'm going to suggest to you that one and a half of those are innocent bystanders who were just hit by crossfire and another one and a half intentionally went out and did things wrong."

Who's who? That's the problem.

Given the huge bucks involved when a team keeps advancing in March Madness, more than a few coaches are into cheating or looking the other way. It's called trying to keep from getting fired. Plus, their fans are modern-day Joe Hardys. Remember? Hardy was the primary guy in the play "Damn Yankees" who was so obsessed with short-term pleasure that he sold his soul to the devil, just for a chance to help his Washington Senators whip the Yankees in the World Series.

Hewitt isn't a Joe Hardy. Hewitt is just a solid combination of coach and person who once took one of his nine Georgia Tech teams to the Final Four title game. He also has recruited a slew of blue chippers, ranging from Chris Bosh to Jarrett Jack to Javaris Crittenton to Thaddeus Young to Derrick Favors.

Not a hint of scandal.

"I'm not sitting here telling you that I know that every player I brought to Georgia Tech was 'clean,' and I wouldn't dare tell you that," Hewitt said. "I'd be naive or lying, because I can't tell you that there isn't a kid out there who was identified at a very early age, and some guy grabbed him, and all of a sudden for the last three or four years, he was providing him with sneakers, and a burger from time to time, and money to attend his prom, or a plane ticket to go to an AAU tournament.

"No, I can't tell you that. Not in the climate that's out here now, and we [in the NCAA] don't do anything to combat that sort of thing."

What should the NCAA do?

Hewitt took a breath. Then he didn't take another one for a while, as he added with conviction, "The NCAA should sit down with the NBA Players Association and tell them, 'Hey, look. We have a problem with your agents contacting these kids at an early age. We have a problem with illegal recruiters and runners on campuses and things like that. We have no control of those people. You do.'

"Not only that, the people who govern our game have to do a better job of getting the truth out to the media, and they have to take an active role in helping us avoid these situations. We also have to win the hearts and souls of these kids. I tell my kids all the time, 'Don't ever let somebody do for you what you should be doing for yourself, because you'll always end up on the short end.' "

So will your school -- and your coach.

And, ultimately, your sport.
From the NCAA to the athletic departments at Texas and Ohio State, they can reap the revenue and not pay taxes because they are part of educational systems.

With the country in a recession, the national deficits rising and tax revenue declining, the U.S. Government has to find other revenue streams. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), in a report, suggested looking into the commercial activities of collegiate athletic departments.

Senator Chuck Grassely (R-Iowa), who initially called for the CBO to investigate, at the very least would like to get some more transparency from the athletic departments around the country.

"The fact that congressional analysts had to rely on information collected by a major newspaper for source data highlights how little information is available about how these programs work. Given all the tax benefits involved, tight state budgets, and rising tuition despite the recession, it's pretty clear that Congress needs to engage and policymakers need to know more in order to act as responsible stewards of the tax policy that drives this fundraising and commercial activity. This report shows colleges receive tax benefits that aren't available to private businesses that engage in the same commercial activities. Colleges should explain how they use their commercial revenue to get the biggest bang for the buck in fulfillment of their educational mission."

The CBO used a database compiled by the Indianapolis Star in its report.

This will ultimately come to nothing. Congress will not, in any way, change the tax exempt status of colleges and their athletic departments. There will be, at best, a public hearing where Senators and/or Representatives can sanctimoniously berate some college presidents and athletic directors.

The college presidents and athletic directors will feebly counter with claims of how the athletic departments and programs support non-revenue sports, give back to the universities, and how athletic activities further the character and development of students. Nothing will come out of it, though, after a few brief moments in the news cycle.

Why? Because there is no way fans and alumni -- specifically voters in each state -- would be willing to see anything hurt their own school's athletic programs.

Do you think a member of Congress from Alabama, Florida or Texas would support legislation that would remove the tax-exempt status of corporate sponsorships, royalties and other revenue streams for the football programs? What are the odds of support to tax that revenue from an Ohio or Michigan Congressman? Do you think an Indiana or Kentucky Congressman would do anything that could be perceived as hurting the basketball programs in their states?

Royalties from licensing, corporate sponsorship programs and the like are huge income producers for programs like the Crimson Tide, Gators, Seminoles, Longhorns, Buckeyes, Wolverines and many other programs.

Fans of major programs are savvy enough to know that the money advantages translates into being able to have higher budgets for paying coaches, facilities and recruiting. They are not going to support losing that advantage. The BCS conference schools are in 35 states. There is simply no way that there would be political support in Congress for minimal tax revenue gains.
Useless Talk of Taxing College Sports originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Thu, 21 May 2009 10:44:00 EST . Fans of the snubbed schools will doubtlessly claim that they are happy that a "thug" and "criminal" like Wall is not going to sully their program.

Please.

Wall was cited -- not even arrested -- for misdemeanor breaking and entering (North Carolina GS Sec. 14-54(b)) last week. It was into an empty house, with no sign of forced entry (not a bad house, judging by the listing).

Essentially, Wall and a couple friends were stupid enough to decide to walk into an empty house. They did not take anything. Essentially, the police wrote him a ticket.

The officer saw Wall leaving from the rear door of the residence and detained him without incident, [Raleigh police spokesman Jim] Sughrue said.

A few minutes later, a second teenager, Bria Renea Draughn, 16, was detained while walking on a nearby street. A third, Reginald Leonard Jackson II, 17, was detained when he returned to the Laurel Glen Drive house, Sughrue said.

Each of the three was issued a citation on a misdemeanor charge of breaking and entering, said Wake County chief magistrate Gary Wills.

The citation is similar to one issued for a traffic violation, Wills said. "You can be cited for a misdemeanor breaking and entering," he said. No warrant was executed.

This is not to minimize what he did, but sneaking into an empty, abandoned house is not exactly an unheard-of action for teenagers, even an 18-year-old under plenty of scrutiny for his basketball prowess. When even a county magistrate is comparing it to a traffic violation, it is hard to draw real outrage.

The choice was never really in doubt.

The junior guards both are likely to go in the first round of the NBA Draft. Both nearly went pro as sophomores last season so the chances that they would stick around after winning the NCAA championship seemed slim at best.

Lawson is expected to be a lottery pick while Ellington will be a late first-round choice. The departure of both thins the UNC backcourt. Right now it would be sophomore Larry Drew running the point while incoming shooting guard Dexter Strickland would slide into Ellington's spot.

Of course, the departure of Lawson may also mean North Carolina could make a full run at uber-point guard recruit John Wall. Coach Roy Williams has been keeping in touch with him since the NCAA tornament ended. Despite some in Wall's entourage rumored to be against Williams, it is hard to say Roy Williams and UNC would have no shot.

C.J. was already on the Memphis squad following a failed professional baseball career, but that meant little. Ultimately Xavier Henry has opted to go to Kansas, and his older brother will be joining him.

The addition of Henry to a recruiting class that includes power forward Thomas Robinson and point guard Elijah Johnson -- both top-50 recruits -- means that a likely top-10 recruiting class will join a Kansas team that finished in the top-10 and will be returning everyone. Kansas now joins North Carolina and Michigan State as the presumed favorites for 2010.

For the second straight year, Bill Self and Kansas are the beneficiary of a major coaching change. Last year it was Tom Crean leaving Marquette for Indiana that had Tyshawn Taylor getting out of his Marquette letter of intent and heading to Kansas.

The decision by Henry also impacts one other McDonald's All-American and two other programs. Lance Stephenson was expected to commit to Kansas but was waiting to see what Henry did.

With Henry choosing Kansas, the Brooklyn native is expected to decide between St. John's or Maryland. Both programs have coaches that are bordering on desperate to land a big-time player.
Kansas Now Fully Loaded With Xavier Henry originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Wed, 22 Apr 2009 21:54:00 EST . Having a collegiate basketball player become a football player isn't a new thing. Antonio Gates is an All-Pro tight end who didn't play a snap of college football, for example.

Still, the movement from football to basketball seems to be increasing in recent weeks. It makes sense, considering the speed, quickness and agility needed in both. For post players in basketball, they've become accustomed to a physical game anyway, and have the necessary strength-athleticism combo for a position like tight end. Here are four currently considering the shift:

Greg Paulus - Duke's former point guard is supposedly considering entering the NFL draft -- where the Packers are interested -- tranferring to Michigan to play football, or staying at Duke to play football. That's probably not all he's considering, but the high school All-American quarterback definitely has options. Holding a clipboard for the Packers, playing quarterback in the Big House, or playing wide receiver on a famiilar campus all seem appealing to varying degrees, so we'll see how he chooses. Of course, you could argue picking basketball over football was the wrong move in the first place, so there is precedent for a sub-par decision.

Jamelle Cornley - Here's a guy who played basketball like it was football at times. At 6-foot-4, 248-pounds, he definitely has the frame to take on the more physical sport. Apparently, he never got the chance to try his hand at the gridiron because his father didn't allow it when Jamelle was growing up. Now, after leading the Penn State Nittany Lions to an NIT Championship as a senior, Cornely is reportedly considering a go-round in pads. In fact, he would have a year of collegiate football eligibility, so it's possible he's added to the fray at Penn State for next season. He's also considering his NBA, NFL and overseas basketball options.

Jon Brockman - Friday night during his on-air visit with the Seattle Mariners broadcast team, Brockman mentioned the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had contacted him and were very interested in the big man. He hasn't even been on a football field competitively since junior high. He said he played some receiver and some lineman. So that narrows it down, I guess? Standing 6-foot-7 and weighing in at 255, though, makes Brockman yet another perfect tight end candidate, should he answer the Bucs' call. For what it's worth, he said he wanted to keep pursuing basketball, but if that didn't work out he'd certainly give football a try. Can't say I blame him.

Fendi Onobun - The former Arizona forward has never played football, but he's got the body for it (6-foot-6, 250 pounds). Onobun played basketball like a football player as well, but he had much less grace than Cornley. Unlike Cornley, he has no chance of playing in the NBA, so the NFL would be his only route, should he wish to make money in America playing a sport. He's currently learning the game, and has worked out for the Patroits, Panthers and Bills. His potential position? You guessed it: Tight end.
Transition to Football Gaining Popularity originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sat, 18 Apr 2009 14:30:00 EST . Even with Aaron Rodgers doing whatever he can in Green Bay to win people over, rumors are flying around that the Packers have worked out Duke basketball player Greg Paulus. Yes, that was "Duke basketball player" you just read.

According to PFT ...

Paulus is a former high school Gatorade Football Player of the Year selection who was offered football scholarships to Notre Dame and the University of Miami, but chose to play basketball at Duke.

Paulus was a three-year starter for the Blue Devils at point guard who was once named second-team All-ACC. He was a third-team Academic All-American selection.

Unless Jerry Jones made it clear that he was interested in Roger Clemens backing up Tony Romo this year, Paulus could be the most obscure and random person to contact about a position in the NFL. He was a great football player in high school, but that was four years ago, and barring any A++++ intramural team championship Paulus lead his team to, the Packers have gone a little insane.

Right now Green Bay has Matt Flynn, who actually played football at LSU, and Brian Brohm, who was a pigskin member at Louisville, behind Rodgers.

If Paulus works out, I guess that will be one professional sport that Mike Krzyzewski produces good talent to. On a night North Carolina coach Roy Williams tried to start seven seniors, it turned out to be another reminder that all the Tar Heels really need is one junior.

No. 2 North Carolina 79, No. 7 Duke 71: Recap | Box Score | RPI | Scores

After all, for two days, North Carolina point guard Tywon Lawson had the most famous foot in sports this side of Tom Brady's protective boot.

Lawson, who injured his toe in practice Friday, was rumored to be on crutches leading up to Sunday's game against rival Duke. So when the ball went up at the Dean E. Smith Center, it was a bit of a surprise to see him in the starting lineup.

But to see him finish the Blue Devils was just downright predictable.

As predictable as the roar of the hometown crowd for departing senior Tyler Hansbrough. As predictable as Mike Krzyzewski's frequent umbrage with the refs. As dadgum predictable as Williams lacing his post-game press conference with a sugar bowl full of dadgums, frickins and doggones.

On a night dedicated to Hansbrough, Lawson would again remind everyone that he is the most important player in the nation. Even with a bad wheel.

"He wasn't the Ty we've seen all year long, but nine assists is pretty doggone good," Williams said after North Carolina's 79-71 win over rival Duke. "He's been so big in close games and he's played so well since the first two games [of the ACC season, both North Carolina losses]."

If this Lawson wasn't as good as it gets, the rest of the NCAA tournament field should just start spring break early, bone up for exams or do anything except try to survive a Bracketville brawl with these 'Heels. If Lawson gets better than he was Sunday, then the engraving has already been done on North Carolina's fifth national championship plaque.

The junior nearly put a triple-double on the Blue Devils. He grabbed eight rebounds, handed out nine assists and scored 13 points, including the five points that all but put the game out of reach, turning a four-point edge with 1:50 left into a nine-point edge 58 seconds later. He turned Duke's defense into a blue-and-white bag of pretzels and twisted through the lane with moves that made you think his joints were made of Play-Doh.

And for the fifth time in five career tries, Lawson beat Duke.

And somewhere along the way he proved what should be as obvious as the Alexander Julian trim on North Carolina's uniforms: Ty Lawson is the true leader of the Heels.

"He has been so big in close games," Williams said of Lawson, when asked about the ACC Player of the Year race. "And I'll say this too. I've never coached anybody that's had to face as much on the court as (Hansbrough) has faced, and he has been awfully impressive. To do the things he has done with two and three guys going at him, as physical as he has played ... I don't know who is player of the year, but you go past those two and I find it hard to believe."

But all you had to do was listen to Mike Krzyzewski to figure out who, exactly, won that game. His post-game autopsy singled out three plays that made the difference.

"I thought that three-point play by [Deon] Thompson, the 3-point shot by [Danny] Green and the 3-point play by Lawson," Krzyzewski said, "those three exchanges were what won the game."

Pour a bottle of luminol over those and you'll see Lawson's fingerprints everywhere. The Thompson bucket, which came after a Gerald Henderson dunk cut the lead to two with just over five minutes to play, came because Lawson's entry pass moved quicker than Duke's Lance Thomas, who was doubling down.

When a Jon Scheyer 3-pointer again trimmed the lead to two with 3:24 left, it was Lawson again who drove the lane so effectively you'd be excused for thinking he had a GPS chip somewhere in his head, and kicked it out for Green's wide-open 3-pointer.

And if there was any doubt left, Lawson took a nail-gun to Duke's coffin on the last of Krzyzewski's three plays. After the Blue Devils rebounded a Lawson miss with 1:18 left, Singler turned the ball over as he stumbled out of bounds with the ball. The Tar Heels got a new 35-second clock to protect their four-point edge. Lawson needed just 14 seconds to blow by Scheyer, sink a layup and head to the charity stripe for another point.

Lawson five. Duke zero.

"Ty Lawson," his coach added succinctly, "was awesome."

He'll never get the publicity of his teammate Hansbrough. Then again, the Tar Heel center couldn't get more fawning press coverage if his first name was Barack and his last name was Tebow. Look hard enough and the Florida quarterback and the president probably have their own Facebook group protesting his coverage.

But what makes North Carolina so dangerous isn't the halfcourt game that Hansbrough excels in, and it sure as heck isn't its defense -- there are kids that go to the dentist with more enthusiasm than the Heels man up -- it's the Lawson-led transition game. Watch the speedy point guard go about his business and it'll look like defenders are wearing Army boots and running in sand. Watch him fly up the court for an and-1 layup, and you have to double-check that he isn't wearing ice skates.

Take Hansbrough out of that lineup, and you've still got what Williams would undoubtedly refer to as a heckuva frickin' team. Behind him, there's Deon Thompson, who scored 14 points, just three fewer than the team star in six fewer minutes. There's freshman Ed Davis, who would likely start on any other ACC team except perhaps Wake Forest. And on, and on, until your realize there's enough height on that team to clean Williams' gutters without fetching a ladder.

But there is no replacement for Lawson anywhere in college basketball.

When he went down a season ago, the Heels lost to an almost exact copy of this Duke team by 11. Backup Quentin Thomas filled in well enough that the Heels, with huge games from Hansbrough, didn't lose again in his six-game absence. But the only thing that was the same about those teams was the uniforms. And as good as Hansbrough has been this year, Lawson has been better. According to Ken Pomeroy's offensive ratings, Lawson is the single most efficient player in the nation, regardless of possessions used. Hansbrough is 21st.

When Lawson has been slowed, the Heels have lost. In North Carolina's three defeats, he's averaging just 3.7 assists per game, almost half of his season average of 6.4 assists. Keep him at five assists and under and you've got a shot of winning. Let Ty drop more than six dimes and you may as well hit Expedia.com for travel arrangements home.

Lawson did get a share of criticism earlier in the year when Jeff Teague and Tyrese Rice torched North Carolina in back-to-back losses to start the season and more than a few wondered if his heart was in college hoops. It was, after all, understandable criticism for a player who thought he'd be cashing paychecks in the NBA this season. (Lawson declared for the NBA Draft last year, but, after an inability to guarantee a top-20 selection returned to campus for a junior season. Some would say it was due to an alcohol charge just before the draft, but the oft-troubled NBA turning its back on a player for a minor arrest seems about as likely as a homeless man sending back a meal because the foie gras was paired with the wrong wine.).

Lawson's one-toe tribute to Willis Reed puts North Carolina almost exactly where it was before the start of ACC play, the favorite to cut down the nets in April.

That is, assuming his bum toe doesn't keep him from playing at full speed. These Heels have seen more injuries than a sweeps-week episode of ER this season; lose Lawson, and Williams may as well as start handing out more Kansas stickers, because North Carolina will need someone else to root for.

"It's just tough for me to move on it or pivot off it right now," Lawson said. "It felt numb. I felt like I was running on four toes. I was able to do everything I could, but now I'm coming down off it and it's real painful right now."

And if those words send a shiver colder than that ice pack on Lawson's foot up the spine of North Carolina fans everywhere, it's likely because they've long known what should be obvious to everyone.

There is no replacing Ty Lawson. And when he's healthy, there's no stopping him either.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this story.
Sorry T, Lawson Is True Top Heel originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sun, 08 Mar 2009 22:00:00 EST . "We had an opportunity to win the game. You put yourself in this environment with the caliber of team that they are. They're a terrific team."

And like usual, the three-time national champion coach is exactly right.

Duke didn't win, but the Blue Devils have more to feel good about than just that they'll likely never see departing North Carolina senior Tyler Hansbrough again.

Call it glass half full with a slice of lime.

"We played better defense. I thought we had better shots. I thought we competed better. I just think we are a better basketball team than we were a month ago. But they're really good. Ya know, if they're not the top team, they have to be one of top two or three. I'm good with where my team is at.

"I mean that's a hell of a game, that's a real good basketball game."

Sure, Duke didn't stop Ty Lawson, but that just means the Blue Devils joined a club of about 340 other teams. Heck, the Hair Club for Men doesn't have this many members. Blaming Duke for not stopping Lawson is like blaming your pediatrician for not curing the common cold.

And sure, Duke gave up 17 to Hansbrough, but it seems like the longtime senior has been dropping double-digit games on opponents since uniforms still had belts. North Carolina gave Duke trouble on the boards too, but second chance points were an even nine to nine, and when you miss as many shots as the Blue Devils did in the second half, defensive rebounds are plentiful.

So, while there's no need to start TiVoing over your old Jason Williams highlights, Duke fans would probably be wise to take the lead from their leader.

Even with the loss, Duke should feel pretty good about itself. And when was the last time you could say that about a Blue Devil team heading into the postseason, a team that's crashed so badly in the postseason that even Sully Sullenberger himself couldn't have safely landed those teams.

The Blue Devils should feel good because Gerald Henderson is still a force on the court unlike last year's injury-induced slump, and, despite his best efforts has yet to crack the Earth's mantle with the force from a particularly angry dunk. Sure, he still struggles going to his left and finished with just 14 points, but he's still the biggest matchup problem this team has, unless the league lets the Devil play with pitchfork in hand.

"G can play better," Krzyzewski said, dismissing concerns about the only Duke player that could change the lights in the shot clock without a ladder. "We're fine with G."

The Blue Devils should feel good because Elliot Williams is still causing matchup problems and is slipping through defenses like he's wearing a jersey made of Crisco. The freshman had eight points, including a mix of whirls through the lane and played a solid defensive game in 38 minutes of work, ignoring his tendency to foul when the ball is so far away from the basket that the twine is barely visible over the curve of the Earth.

The Blue Devils should feel good because the Jon Scheyer experiment is working. In his six games at the point he's shooting 46 percent from the floor and 46 percent from 3-point range. Against North Carolina he scored 24 points on 7-for-7 shooting, with five assists, no turnovers and four steals. Scheyer could've handcuffed Tyler Hansbrough to a radiator in the second half and done only slight more to lead Duke to victory than he did.

"Jon had a great game," Krzyzewski said, "not a big game, a great game."

The Blue Devils should feel good because they simply missed a lot of shots and still kept North Carolina within seven points for all but the final 52 seconds of the game. Stars Kyle Singler and Henderson went 3-for-14 in the second half and yet the Blue Devils kept a tow-rope firmly attached to North Carolina's bumper.

The Blue Devils should feel good because Nolan Smith is on his way back, and, despite lacking their top perimeter defender, forced North Carolina to play at a pace of the Devils' choosing. And Smith should go a long way toward erasing that zero Duke put up in bench points.

And the Blue Devils should feel good because it's March and, instead of entering like a lamb and leaving like a sacrifice, these Blue Devils are actually starting to get better.

So to Duke, here's a toast. Mike Krzyzewski, please raise your half-full glass.
For Blue Devils, a Loss in Name Only originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sun, 08 Mar 2009 21:45:00 EST . That did not cut it last year and it will not work this year.

No. 24 Florida State 63, Virginia Tech 53: Box Score | RPI | Scores

Florida State finished off Virginia Tech's NCAA Tournament hopes by beating the Hokies. Toney Douglas was the best player on the court, and led the defensive effort to shut down the Hokies.

The frustration by Virginia Tech players was palpable as they could not get clean looks. A.D. Vassallo and Malcolm Delaney may have led the Hokies with 27 points, but shot only 8-for-27 to do that. Frequently, they lagged on getting back on defense because they were too busy complaining to the refs that they were fouled when they went inside.

The Hokies lost four games in the non-conference schedule by a total of five points. Three of their conference losses were by a combined seven points. The flip side is that they won two non-conference games by five points or less. They also won five conference games by five points or less. So, that's seven close wins and seven close losses. All of which suggests that the Hokies are just where they belong.

A good team, but not quite good enough. Sitting just off of the bubble and looking for another NIT bid.
Seminoles Dash Hokies' Hopes originally appeared on NCAA Basketball FanHouse on Sun, 08 Mar 2009 16:23:00 EST .
