No 16 seed has ever beaten a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and the chances of it happening this year are viewed as so remote that you can make this wager at Bodog:
In what round will the first #1 ranked seed (North Carolina, Memphis, UCLA, Kansas) be eliminated from the March Madness 2008 Tournament?

Even at 250-1 odds, doesn't picking Mount St. Mary's, Coppin State, Portland State, UT-Arlington or Mississippi Valley State to beat North Carolina, Kansas, Memphis or UCLA strike you as a terrible bet?

It sure does to me. There may be parity in college basketball to some extent, but not to such a great extent that the best team in the Pac-10 or ACC needs to be concerned about playing the best team in the Northeast or SWAC. The first two days of the NCAA Tournament are the best two days of the year in American sports, but those four games are going to be dull. Maybe making those games interesting is why some people are willing to put down some money on a 250-1 shot.

Predicted Pac-10 finish: Media: 1; FanHouse: 1

Last year: 30-6 overall, 15-3 in the Pac-10; lost in national semifinals of NCAA tournament.

Key returners/newcomers: Darren Collison; Josh Shipp; Luc Richard Mbah A Moute; this girl/Kevin Love; Chase Stanback

Key losses: Arron Afflalo

Why they might be good: Back-to-back Final Fours. Great point guard in Collison. Perhaps the best freshman in the country in Love. And all the other parts of the puzzle. Losing Afflalo will be tough, but his loss will go unnoticed when the Bruins keep winning -- and they'll do that with Collison's leadership and a formidable inside presence with Love and Mbah A Moute. Anything short of a third-straight Final Four would be a bit surprising.

Why they might suck: Unless Collison gets hurt, Love puts on a freshman 50 and coach Ben Howland gets caught with a transsexual hooker, the Bruins will be nowhere near sucking.
