Wet Ball Causes Morningstar's Comical Free Throw

Kansas' Brady Morningstar is a nice enough shooter. Between this season and last, he's shooting 78 percent (35-45) from the line.

That made this flailing, failing free throw effort in Monday's win against Texas all the more enjoyable. It also sent bloggers scrambling to Google for the correct spelling of schadenfreude.

After the game, Morningstar provided an explanation:

"The ball was wet. It slipped on the way up. I was so confused. I could have caught it and came down with it, but I'd have stepped on the line. I tried to shoot a little jump shot so I didn't cross the line."
Former Jayhawk Julian Wright feels Morningstar's pain.

Ironically, against Texas the Jayhawks reversed a recent dry spell from the free throw line, shooting 22-29 (76 percent). Kansas shot just 49 percent from the line in its previous two games (26-53).

In a Feb. 5 news conference, Bill Self said he's "a big believer that if you can't put yourself into game-type situations it doesn't do near as much good as a lot of people think to shoot a lot of free throws."

Hmm. He might want to rethink that. Or at least remind his players to dry off the basketball.
