Update: USC has confirmed Tim Floyd's resignation. "I accept Tim's decision and wish him well," USC athletic director Mike Garrett said in a statement.University of Southern California men's basketball coach Tim Floyd has reportedly resigned in the wake of an accusation that he gave $1,000 to a man who helped convince O.J. Mayo to enroll at USC.
The Clarion Ledger newspaper in Floyd's home state of Mississippi reports that Floyd sent USC athletic director Mike Garrett this letter:
"As of 1 p.m. today, I am resigning as head basketball coach at the University of Souithern California. I deeply appreciate the opportunity afforded me by the university, as well as the chance to know and work with some of the finest young men in college athletics. Unfortunately, I know longer feel I can offer the level of enthusiasm to my duties that is deserved by the university, my coaching staff, my players, their families, and the supporters of Southern Cal. I always promised my self and my family that if I ever felt I could no longer give my full enthusiasm to a job, that I should leave it to others who could. I intend to contact my coaching staff and my players in coming days and weeks to tell them how much each of them means to me. I wish the best to USC and to my successor."Floyd leaves USC with a four-year record of 85-50. He has previously coached at Iowa State, the University of New Orleans and the University of Idaho in the NCAA, and for the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Hornets in the NBA. Given the serious charges of misconduct at USC, it's likely that he's done coaching in the NCAA, and given his 93-235 record as a pro coach, it's likely that he'll never coach in the NBA again, either. Unless the accusations of improper conduct turn out to be completely unfounded, Floyd is probably out of coaching for good.
Floyd has not commented publicly, and neither has USC.

When you cheat, you pay the price. Floyd gave up a great job at a great university for what? A thousand dollars? He derserves what he gets.

He should have pulled a Calipari and gone to Arizona. I doubt very seriously Arizona would have canned him and he would have been away from the mess he created at USC and not unemployed. He evidently could learn a lot by hanging out with ole Cal at Kentucky. Maybe Cal has a spot on his staff.

More cheating at USC. These people think they are so much better than everyone else. I can't wait for their basketball and football programs to be put on probation.

This smells like sacrificial rack of lamb. Doesn't anyone think it strange that a coach with 3 decades of squeaky clean suddenly has this allegation when pressure builds to address the Reggie Bush investigation? Rodney Guillory himself said Floyd didn't give him a dime, and so does Floyd. Just this Johnson guy who is trying to promote a book says this, but admits he didn't witness it. So...the $1000 WILL go nowhere. And look at that story.....people have written that that is SO not how a payment would go down. It 1) wouldn't be done by Floyd himself 2) wouldn't be done in crowded Hollywood, by UCLA, where everyone would recognize Floyd 3) and it would be a hell of a lot more than $1000! That amount is laughable 4) It would have been BEFORE Mayo signed and not months AFTERWARDS?? It makes NO NO NO sense. I think Floyd is the fall guy for football. And, by the way, who is the NCAA's biggest client? USC FOOTBALL!! Hmmm....points to ponder.
