The story wasn't going to be about Kansas winning. Seriously. The Jayhawks never had a chance of grabbing the headlines. Even with Bill Self's crew closing out an impressive Big 12 road win, ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla was still discussing the lack of impact this game would have on Oklahoma's NCAA tournament resume. That's because Blake Griffin didn't play. And that's not to take away from Kansas' impressive 87- 78 win over the Sooners in Norman, Okla., but it would be completely unrealistic to think this is the same Oklahoma team with Griffin on the bench.
Still, Kansas looked good. Sherron Collins and Tyshawn Taylor blew up for 26 points each, and Cole Aldrich posted a monster 15-point, 20-rebound line. The Jayhawks, who led by seven at the half, managed to fight off a furious Oklahoma rally late in the second half and take first place in the Big 12.
But the bigger point is that regular season standings only matter through the Big 12 season. If Griffin isn't healthy by Selection Sunday, then it won't matter what kind of Big 12 banner the Sooners stick in their rafters, because his absence would turn a really good team into just a good team. As talented as Oklahoma's Willie Warren and Taylor Griffin are, they're not helping coach Jeff Capel cut down the nets in Detroit if the younger Griffin isn't back to help them.
On the other hand though, there's definitely something to be said about the effort that the Griffin-less Sooners put out tonight -- they stormed out to an early lead in front of a white-out crowd, watched that hot start turn into a sizable deficit and still stormed back against a good Kansas team.
While that kind of effort alone isn't enough to give them a No. 1 seed in either the NCAA or Big 12 tournament, it is the kind of game that screams "good loss" and might somehow propel the Sooners to greater heights.
Of course, those things depend on Blake Griffin coming back healthy. That was that the story all along.

it's a team sport. having a great star player is nice, but when that star has an off night (or has a collision with another very big star) the sky can suddenly darken. We'll see about the rematch.

I can't believe this is so news worthy he is part of a team and he doesn't play so his team loses that doesn't sound like a team to me.

You win as a team, you lose as a team. 5 against 5.

Smart move for him not to play. KU would have won anyway. He was cleared by the Doctors to play so why didn't he ??? so as not to hurt there standings after their lose to KU.

The Sooners really are a one man team. The other four occasionally show up offensively and defensively they are like the football team. Good at home and in conference. Should be ranked 14 or 15.

14th or 15th? And it's not about them being a one man team or anything, it's about their gameplan is work the post to free up the guards and that is taken away drastically when their best scorer in the post is taken away. Not to mention that we had no answer for aldrich's rebounding. Blake certainly would have neutralized that. We're a great team with blake an ok team without him. There are dosens of schools like that. maybe 14th or 15th without him, but top 4 with him

If OU can't win without Blake Griffin then they don't deserve to be #2. OU is a very good team even without Griffin which is a lot to say considering he is the best player in the NCAA and I'm a huge KU fan. Griffin is good, OU is good and they lost, stop making excuses just because a younger, smaller team played good enough to beat them. Plus something funny is going on with Griffin's "injury." The supposed "blows" that he took during the Texas game were bogus. I'm a girl and I can take hits like that

So many unanswered questions:
Who will be Coach of the Year: OU's Capel or KU's Self?
Who will be Player of the Year: NC's Hansbrough or Griffin?
Can KU beat OU with Griffin playing?
Will either KU or OU be a #1 (or) #2 seed?
