Georgia basketball has struggled mightily over the past few years, and with the exception of a miracle SEC tournament run last year, Dennis Felton hasn't had a whole heck of a lot to hang his hat on. Which explains why, after his team's seventh consecutive loss Wednesday night, the Georgia coach was fired.
Felton's record while coaching the Bulldogs was 84-91, and despite winning the conference tournament last year, he never led any of his Georgia teams to winning records in the SEC.
"I'm disappointed that things have not worked out better," athletic director Damon Evans at a news conference. "I do think it is in the best interest of our men's basketball program that we move in a new direction. And while this may be unusual timing, I'm convinced it is the right time."
Assistant coach Pete Herrmann takes the reigns as the dreaded "interim" coach, and it's pretty hard to imagine that whatever he does the rest of the way could be more disappointing than Felton's tenure. Unless Herrmann leads the Dawgs to some sort of miraculous run again, though, expect a full coaching search in the offseason.
