Pitt had good timing in ascending to the No. 1 spot in the rankings. A week off, and then a home game against the St. John's Red Storm. Yes, the Red Storm had upset Notre Dame the week before, but that was at home and St. John's was able to defend Notre Dame's guards. Pitt, by contrast, is much more of an interior team. It showed as Pitt overwhelmed St. John's, 90-67.The game was close for the first half. Pitt only held a five point lead, as St. John's D.J. Kennedy had a fantastic first half in his return to his hometown. The Red Storm shot very well, while Pitt struggled to get the baskets. Sam Young, especially, had a dismal first half shooting only 2-for-11. Still, Pitt had the lead because they forced a slew of St. John's turnovers and had more opportunities with DeJuan Blair inside.
The second half, had Pitt completely blitz St. John's. Pitt shot nearly 60 percent in the second half, and continued to force turnovers. St. John's just could not keep up with Pitt inside. The players were getting visibly tired and making sloppier passes.
The win almost guarantees that Pitt will remain the number one team in the polls for a second straight week. Continuing their first ever stay at the top of the polls. Hopefully there will not be any t-shirts to celebrate.
