It is easy to get complacent and try to line up teams in a conference in a presumed pecking order and just know that things will shake out a certain way. The ACC has that this year. If you predict North Carolina, Duke and then some order of Wake Forest, Clemson and Miami; you probably won't be too far afield for the top 5 teams. The Big East is no where near that neat and tidy. Before the season started, it was anyone's guess between UConn, Pitt, Louisville and Notre Dame as to the top team. UConn and Louisville had the most talent and the top flight talent. Pitt and Notre Dame had fine young coaches with veteran players and great team chemistry. Choosing any of those teams to win the Big East were defensible. After that, picking a team like Marquette, Villanova, Syracuse, West Virginia or Georgetown seemed too speculative. There were too many questions on those teams.
Moving through the non-conference slate, it looked like UConn would be the class of the conference by a slight margin over Pitt. Notre Dame was very good. Louisville was struggling with what has become a typical December malaise. Syracuse, West Virginia, Villanova and Georgetown were much not too far behind.
Still, there are givens. A team is not going to Storrs (or in this case, Hartford) and take a game from the Huskies right from the opening tip to the end. The number 2 team in the country never had the lead and couldn't even tie after starting 0-0. Georgetown dominated UConn on their way to a 84-73 win.
The Hoyas completely packed it in against UConn. Playing a tight zone on defense, giving the Huskies no room to attack the basket or pass it inside to Thabeet. They completely kept UConn from getting out in transition. Not in what has been a typically slow tempo Georgetown game. It was simply a strong defense from end-to-end that did not let UConn leak out and get ahead of the defense. The Huskies, instead, found themselves settling for pull-up jumpers and not being able to get to the basket.
Hasheem Thabeet was a non-factor on offense with only four shot attempts in 34 minutes, and only seven rebounds. While he did have seven blocked shots, too many of them were followed by Georgetown getting another opportunity.
Georgetown actually displayed a lot more athleticism and willingness to attack the basket with Greg Monroe, DeJuan Summers and Chris Wright. While the Hoyas displayed some of the Princeton offense in spells, they were not afraid to use their natural athleticism, talent and speed to go right at the Huskies. Without Roy Hibbert and John Wallace, the team may not be as efficient on offense, but they are more dynamic and able to play at a pace that allows them to score in larger numbers.
While there was no doubt Georgetown had shown in the non-conference schedule that they were going to be better than expected. Dismantling Maryland, beating Memphis and only a loss to Tennessee in the Old Spice Classic showed that they were quite good.
Still, to not just win, but dominate UConn in Hartford. Well that was a vibrant flare being fired that even home court for a top-5 team hardly guarantees anything in the Big East this year. To say nothing of the fact that Georgetown now has to be considered to be in the mix for the top of the Big East.

This just in, the Hoyas still suck (or as one blogger says it, "Hoya Suxa) and that coach of their's last name is a word we do not speak of. Go Orange!

Or maybe UConn is just terribly underwhelming at this point in the season.
Thabeet gets 4 points and 7 boards with no signs of foul trouble and while playing decently tonight, AJ Price has not fully rebounded from his offseason surgery.
Right now UConn is the third best team in the Big East after Pitt and G'town with Syracuse arguably being better. Louisville is another fraud team as well.
The Big East is a very good conference but the preseason hype was WAAAAAY too much for it to live up to.

11-0 thats what jim wants to start at every year. he has a great team but if you play 11 fairfields they will never know what hits them come the real season. i don't know how many years he's been doing this but it's time to stop. play a good first schedule let your team see what they have and then coach!

I love how the preseason predictions are always wrong. I think that UConn, Pitt, Gonzaga, and Louisville are way overrated. I like the big east, but it's the same old crap.
Early prediction,I think that Georgetown, Syracuse and WVU will be the three teams remaining going into the sweet sixteen.
Actually, one of the three will go all the way to the Nationals against North Carolina. Probably another upset year for such a talented NC team. Big East will win the championship, but not with any of the biased teams that were picked early.
Let's Go WVU!!

No doubt the Big East is the best conference in the country this year. And it’s a distinct possibility that they’ll get nine teams in the dance (though I still think it will be eight after the meat grinder of conference play). The real question isn’t how many teams the Big East will get into the dance; it’s how they’ll do once they get there. The fact of the matter is that, since the Big East expanded in 2006, they have been tourney underperformers.
There’s a calculation called PASE (performance against seed expectations) that compares how many games that seeding suggests a conference, team or coach should’ve won to how many they actually did. Since 2006, the Big East is actually a -.123 PASE performer–meaning that their teams, on average, fall short of seed expectations by about an eighth of a game per tourney.
The best conference since 2006 is the SEC (not surprising since Florida’s two championships are included). Their PASE is +.442. And before Big East fans start to worry that they’re getting eclipsed by the ACC, you’ll be happy to know that they’re the worst of the Big Six power conferences, with a dreadful PASE of -.435.
Why has the Big East underperformed in the tourney since it expanded? Well, three tourneys isn’t exactly a big sample size, but my theory is that the conference is so competitive that the teams beat each other up before the dance–and might not be in the best shape to slog through the national tourney. Whatever the case, you can read more about this on my blog at http://www.bracketscience.com.

The team that will WIN the MENS NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNY will be from the BIG EAST. I can believe what Im seeing this is a perfect example why pre-season ranks are garbage. North Carolina belongs in the middle of the ACC they are overrated I mean we all know that Tyler Hansbourgh will not be a center in the NBA.. Leaves what PF...LOL I Like how Tyler brings intensity to the basketball court and plays with 100% emotion but see the thing is, is that they arent going to win ACC tourn and WILL NOT win NCAA TOURNY. But i will tell you has a shot since were asking about who has the best shot........ Welcome in The Big East Champs and the only school to win both mens and womens basketball championships............. The Uconnn Huskies ........... Say what you want about them. Champions aren't afraid of intense games UConn will make u run up and down of the court
thinking mabye lets try out our lucks next year
