No. 1 North Carolina and No. 13 Michigan State will meet in Detroit's Ford Field tonight. Since Michigan State is technically the home team and Ford Field needs to be turned from a football field into a basketball court, the Spartans are bringing in the lumber.
They are bringing the floor they won the 2000 National Championship on.
Typically the champions buy the floor they won the tournament on. They use it for all kinds of things: displays, boosters, just showing off. They have packed it up for the short drive east to Detroit and having it laid down for tonight's big game.
North Carolina has also played on this floor before. They were also in that 2000 Final Four, losing to Florida in the national semifinals. Michigan State beat Florida two nights later for the title.
Ford Field is the site for this year's Final Four where some school will be able to buy the new floor. Both Michigan State and UNC hope it is them.
