Ohio University basketball player Maurice Pearson was suspended from the team indefinitely after he was found guilty of aggravated menacing and assault. Pearson was charged after shooting two Delta Gamma Sorority members with an Airsoft gun. (Somewhere, members of the Uzi-toting, Switzer-era Sooners are laughing. An Airsoft rifle? Those boys were packing real heat.)
For those of you not familiar with Airsoft rifles, they fall somewhere between paintball guns and the BB gun Chevy Chase used to kidnap John Candy in Vacation in terms of chance of injury. Breaking the skin with these guns is very hard, though you could damage an eye.
Pearson, 18, was found guilty of aggravated menacing (which sounds kind of cool) and assault last Thursday. Pearson was fined and will serve four days of house arrest.
Ohio's athletic department has seen a lot of crimes recently, including underage drinking, gambling, and athletes filming a sex tape or, in other words, my sophomore year. But the Airsoft thing is kind of a new twist.
