It's been sadly comical. Since almost noon today, the reports have been that Lute Olson was retiring. Arizona's Athletic Department, however, was stuck with denials and pretending that nothing out of the ordinary was going on. Meanwhile things are already being leaked by the parents of recruits and the players. Speculation was already underway as to who Arizona would pursue after this season. Finally, Arizona releases a statement.
Lute Olson announced today that he will retire as head coach of The University of Arizona men's basketball team, effective immediately. The statement makes no mention of health issues as the reason for his retirement. Health issues, however, were cited earlier today as the reason in the "unofficial" reports. Plus, as was later learned, part of the reason for Olson taking a leave from the team last year was also health related.
UA Athletics Director Jim Livengood announced that a national search will begin soon to find a permanent replacement.
"This was not a decision that was made lightly," Olson said. "I've had a wonderful run at The University of Arizona. I leave with a great sense of pride in what we have accomplished here."
"At this stage in my life, I want to devote my time to my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. I look forward to watching Wildcat basketball and visiting with my colleagues in the coaching profession. It is time to pass the program on to a younger staff, to transition the university to the next generation of basketball."
"To my family, all of the players who have put on our uniform, our fans in Tucson and all of the great supporters of this basketball program, I offer my heartfelt thanks for your support, and I look forward to reconnecting with each of you," Olson said. "The University of Arizona will always be a basketball school. It will continue to flourish."
As far as the Wildcat team, this looks like a lost season and definitely a lost year for recruiting. Lute Olson certainly didn't intend it, but he leaves Arizona mess. Two years of interim coaches. Recruiting has suffered -- Abdul Gaddy and Solomon Hill have all but said they are re-opening their recruitment. Talent has fled to Europe -- and after this year it is good-bye to Chase Budinger. Don't be surprised if Nic Wise and Jordan Hill also get out after their junior year.
