Duke beat Virginia Tech Thursday night, and the player of the game was Duke freshman Kyle Singler, who scored 10 of his 16 points during an 18-9 run that allowed the Blue Devils to pull away in the second half.
But the real story of the game was Virginia Tech's Deron Washington, who played dirty throughout, tripping Singler at one point, undercutting DeMarcus Nelson on a dunk at another, and intentionally bumping into a Duke huddle. Here are some YouTube highlights (UPDATE: Better video courtesy of Awful Announcing):
Washington got an intentional foul and eventually fouled out of the game, but he never got a technical, and I find it shocking that he wasn't ejected. Duke loses some sympathy because its players flop too much, but last night, Duke was in the right and Washington was in the wrong.

Washington is too good a player to revert to such behavior. Yes it is a physical game and emotions get the best of some players.
Duke showed a tough side without making it "basketbrawl". Deron.... please learn from this before you find yourself in the middle of an NBA arena chasing fans in their seats!

Deron Washington, dirty player? absolutley! I have watched this young man since he entered college b-ball. His style of play has never matured. I was extremly appalled with Len Elmore, who throughout the night kept trying to explain away Deron's obvious dirty game. Poor Len Elmore, He kept trying to compare Filet Mignon(Demarcus Nelson,Singlar,Henderson,Schyer,Thomas,Smith,King and the rest of the Duke players) to Top Round (Washington, and the rest of the Va Tech players). I know that sportscasters try to be objective, but last night was simply terrible. Len Elmore should have called out Deron Washington from the start of the game when Deron started his antics.

Nelson could have been hurt with that cheapshot play. Don't forget he deliberately stepped on a player's face last year. I agree that Len Elmore should have called him out instead of ignoring bad sportsmanship. Rivalry is one thing...Playing to hurt someone is bush league.

Not a dry eye in the house? Henderson's cheap shot, Laettner stepping on a player, yeah, what a clean bunch K coaches to play. Washington just gets out of control trying too hard and should be disciplined if he goes over the line, which he didn't. Call the game the same at both ends, oh that's right the Dookies don't want that, they want all the calls.

So because Laettner did something dumb 15 years ago it is ok do get out of control. Washington although making questionable decisions wasn't that bad. The intentional foul was a misunderstanding because all the refs saw was him being demonstrative and thought we was pushing Singler. But you really have to be careful taking a guys legs out. Trust me it is no fun when you jump and suddenly your feet are over your head and all you have is a wood floor to break your fall
