Saint Louis University basketball coach Rick Majerus is supporting Hillary Clinton for president, and he made an appearance for her campaign on Saturday. Now Majerus could be in hot water with his employer. Saint Louis is a Catholic school, and Majerus said he is pro-choice on abortion and that he supports stem cell research. St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke says Majerus should be disciplined -- and maybe even fired:
During an interview with the Post-Dispatch today in Washington, where Burke is attending the March for Life, he said the coach should be disciplined.Burke has a long history of using his position in the Catholic church to criticize Democrats and Catholics who support Democrats, and Majerus is just the latest person to feel his wrath.
"It's not possible to be a Catholic and hold those positions," Burke said. "When you take a position in a Catholic university, you don't have to embrace everythign the Catholic church teaches. But you can't make statements which call into question the identity and mission of the Catholic church."
The archbishop declined to offer specifics of what discipline Majerus should face. "I'm confident it (the university) will deal with the question of a public representative making declarations that are inconsistent with the Catholic faith."

First, Pope Benedict was a Nazi. I have never heard either him or "Archbishop" Burke denounce his Nazi past (or present) status. How godly it is to be a Catholic.
Second, Coach Majerus has not renounced the Catholic Church; he has simply made his feelings known that happen to conflict with the unfortunate teachings of the Church which have held women and science back.
You see, Coach is not pro-abortion and killing; he is pro-choice and pro-life-saving as far as stem-cell research is concerned.
Since when can celibate men know better than a 14-year-old school-girl rape or incest victim that she MUST carry a child to term & make the gut-wrenching decision to be black-balled by her community and give that child up for adoption or raise her or him in poverty, when an abortion can be performed quietly with support from her loving church?
And since when must an embryo be thrown on the trash heap when scientists can positively use it to find cures for horrible death sentence diseases? Are you pro-life, Catholics, or still pro-torture and death from the Middle Ages?

In re the death penalty - The following is from http://www.americancatholic.org/News/DeathPenalty/BishopsDeath.asp: "Holy Week Campaign to End Death Penalty" by Patricia Zapor Catholic News Service
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Bolstered by trends in public policy and new polling data showing that Catholics increasingly oppose capital punishment, the U.S. bishops March 21 kicked off Holy Week by launching a Catholic Campaign to End the Use of the Death Penalty.
The U.S. bishops as a group have spoken out against the death penalty several times since the 1970s, including a comprehensive 1980 statement and a 1999 Good Friday appeal. Individual bishops and state or regional church organizations also have issued dozens of statements and pastoral letters on the topic.
"But this campaign is new," said Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington at the press conference where the campaign was announced. "It brings greater urgency and unity, increased energy and advocacy and a renewed call to our people and to our leaders to end the use of the death penalty in our nation."

He's a basketball coach, not a priest. If the Church banished all who did wrong in the eyes of the Church, it would be a pretty small constituency. The soul is not enough, evidently, they also need to usurp the mind...that would be the same mind that we were blessed with that allows us to think and reason as individuals

Florida --- Thanks for that biblical money update "you cannot serve God and money" Mathew 6:24
As a counselor, I get religious clients who are broke because of forgotten religious teachings held deep in the subconscious; that one is no acception. Along with about 76% of the Bible (stories created by men, not God, to control others) it's been a hard but rewarding task to deliver power back to my clients who live in fear of this so called evil God who can toss you in the pits of hell fire. Great idea to grab people by the balls and squeeze. The man created fear mongering has worked on many. Not so much any more thanks to intelligent people becoming informed about the many off beat fanatical statements in the Bible that can't be substantiated.
Hopefully Majerus will not be taunted by such snake oil manipulation the catholic church is advocating. Clergyman Burke needs to go, not Majerus. Majerus has the right to support any candidate or issue he wants.
Not to mention the last Pope advocating NOT WEARING CONDOMS IN AFRICA because it is against church teachings, a place the Pope aknowledged that AIDS is fully out of control. It stuns me that someone like the Pope who looks so studied and gifted, could be such a deaf dumb idiot with such facts at his feet.
I suggest clergy man Raymond Burke stick to business as usual, shutting his pie hole and helping the poor. That is if he is not possibly out molesting little boys, another crop of clients to rehabilitate after Catholic priests unzipped their pants in all the wrong places. Or better yet, maybe he could turn over some of the priests he may be hiding.
Regardless, the Catholic clergy and church in general are hardly the people I would take advice from regarding anything about sex or sexuality, abortion included. Like the death penalty, abortion in certain circumstances is VERY VERY applicable. Desiring sweeping laws about it are more frivilous attempts at control, AGAIN. Even if Huckabee were to get elected, like Bush, he would drop the ball on ammending the constitution. As with all politicians, he will say anything to get elected.
I am enjoying watching the religious right come fully dismantled as time progresses. It is self inflicted and imploding from within. God job! I meant good job!
People are finally getting smarter and waking up to the fear based control more commonly known as the devil's work to many, another stupid hollywood style freaky belief.
Religious people think the end times are about the end of the world, it's not, it's about the end of religion. This is as it should be.

I'd just like to point out one thing. It's a sad, sad day in the world today. Everyone want freedem of speach, but our socity is always ready to hop on anyone who doesn't share there views. It's like being ethnocintric. You don't look alike, not the same race, political belives different, and so on. If we are free to express ourselves. Why the ridicure? We may as well all give up and wait to be told what to think, how to live , what to buy, hell how to die. There is no freedem of speach if our goverment (which I don't trust)and I enlisted to protect my country during veitnam.I belive that until we the people learn to come together,(reguardless of race or religion) and we gang up on the elected to do what is good for all, and not just the rich.We will only continue to suffer. From Burk to the president will tell you ,you think what they want you to think and not use your own mine. So you don't know how to think uh?We will all have to deal with our lifes at judgement day before God.I'd really hate to miss out because I didn't think for myself, and was just lead around by the nose like I can't make choices for myself. If I;m going down I'd rather lead myself than to be lead.

The Hierarchy of the Catholic Church has a very long and hallowed history of being intolerant, stupid and just plain wrong on matters of morality and spirituality, from torturing people during the Inquisition to hiding pedophiles, the Church seldom, it seems, actually follows the teachings of Jesus. Why are we so concerned about such a growing irrelevancy as the Catholic hierarchy?

When a parent is paying Catholic School Tuition, they expect and deserve the teachings of the Catholic Church to be up-held. The coach is entitled to his own opinion. However, when you sign a contract with a Religous University, you are agreeing to show respect for their beliefs through your actions and words. This is what is lacking in our society today....RESPECT. God Bless the Bishop for standing up for his faith and shame on those who have become accepting of bad behavior and choices.

Maybe he should have checked with the Pope. The Catholic church has finally been uncovered and its secret litle ploys are being uncovered. Maybe they should have asked the coach about his personal beliefs before they hired him.

VERY GOOD REASONING:
9. Fun Fact: fact is you should check your facts before you make a non-factual comment. the Death Penalty is not against the teaching of the church. It is church teaching that the Death Penalty should be used only when absolutely necessary to protect society. This is a guideline, not a dogma, which means it is ultimately up to a society and individuals to follow their conscience on this issue. You should really take the time to know what you are talking about before you pronounce something as fact. Otherwise you look the fool!
NOW, WHY NOT USE THE SAME REASONING ON THE ABORTION ISSUE? OR IS THAT TOO CONFUSING FOR THE DOGMATIC CATHOLIC CHURCH TO FOLLOW????

The Catholic Church is tax-exempt. So, when victims of sexual abuse or assault by its clergy sue for compensation, the Church mounts a tax-free legal defense. When the Church is found liable, they pay with tax-free funds.
The Catholic Church in America should be prosecuted under RICO (the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act), as they act just like organized crime.

As a native St. Louisan and a graduate of St. Louis University, let me say that I am not a supporter of Archbishop Burke; HOWEVER, WHEN YOU ARE BEING PAID BY A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY you need to keep your anti-Catholic views to yourself unless you want to face retribution. The person who I pity is Father Biondi who is going to be faced with a very difficult decision. Biondi has been incredible for SLU and my thoughts and prayers go out to him at this difficult time. He's got to be ready to ring Majerus' neck for making his political views public. I also feel for the players and the parents of the Billiken basketball team. They don't need this negative attention. Majerus should have thought about this when he opened his mouth. Reminds me of the Dixie Chicks. Free speech, but there is definitely a price to pay.

As one other comment pointed out, he WORKS for the Catholic Church. HOw many of you have a different opinion than YOUR boss? It shouldn't matter what he does and supports on HIS FREE TIME. First Amendment rules in this country provide him the protection to voice his thoughts. IF they don't think he should be makeing statements on his own time, they should have to pay him for every minute of his day, then it will all be their time.

Good, I hope Majarus quits and goes to a school who wants a good man and a great basketball coach. We are not all bishops or cardinals or christians as far as that goes. THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED ON FREE SPEECH AND THE RIGHT TO WORSHOP THE WAY WE FEEL. There are plenty of heathen schools who would love to have Rick as their coach

Why did the catholic leader not speak up when the powerfull CEOs and the Bush adminstration are linning thier pockets with money and some of them are actually stealing from the next generation.
Thou shalt not steal is one of the commandment.
When when the catholic church takes care of its OWN mess inside the catholic church them it has the moral authority to speak. Now remember God gave us the freedom to choose.
