ESPN commentator Dick Vitale and Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will get together Friday night to raise money for the "Dick Vitale Gala To Benefit The V Foundation For Cancer Research." I'm sure it's a fine cause, but I can't help but cringe when I see quotes like this from Vitale:"Coach Krzyzewski is an icon in the coaching fraternity," Vitale said. "His record is absolutely magnificent. To me, however, he is an even better humanitarian. He has a magical way of extending a hand to those in need."
Really? He's a better humanitarian than he is a coach? Krzyzewski is one of the five best coaches in the history of college basketball. Is he really one of the five best humanitarians in the history of humanity? He's been named Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (1991), The Sporting News (1992), and Basketball Times (1997). Why hasn't he also been named Time Magazine's Man of the Year or won the Nobel Peace Prize? Something is wrong here.

First of all, give dickie v the benefit of the doubt. He just meant Coach K's popularity and charisma make him an attractive candidate to attract donors for whatever the cause. Is he "mother teresa"? Heck no. But I will say he is successful coach, mentor, and ambassador for college hoops. Given the pressure to win nowdays for college coaches, his record, demeanor and graciousness, win or lose, should be commended. Plus his players graduate. GO DUKE!

I can't stand Coach K at all, but I do believe you are incorrect in your characterization - I'm pretty sure the a--hole is, in fact, TIME magazine's reigning man of the year.
Which is why you should never read magazines.
