Radio talker Don Imus has been suspended two weeks for calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos." It's a joint suspension between CBS, which syndicates his show on the radio, and the cable network MSNBC, which televises the show. Imus has promised to knock off the racially-tinged humor on his show. An MSNBC statement said, "Our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word." Imus has said he would like to visit the Rutgers women's team to apologize to them in person, though it's not clear whether the players will take him up on the offer.
My only question about the suspension is this: What took so long? Imus initially made the "nappy-headed hos" comment last week, but he was still on the air this morning. Why did it take so long for the networks to realize the seriousness of Imus's comments?
Read all about Imus and watch video of his comments and subsequent apologies with our Don Imus tag.

I cannot understand why an insulting ignoramus like Don Imus is not fired outright. I appreciate the Constitution saying we are stuck with Bush until 2008, but we should be able to jettison Imus forthwith.

Don Imus is a cross between Saturday Night Live and real news. I understand he used the phrase in humor. Bernie (his producer), once did a bit in Harlem where he asked questions on the street and the prize for the correct answer was a 40 oz. bottle of beer. Nobody got upset about that because New Yorkers have a sense of humor, especially about themselves.
I fear for humor on T.V. What is next?

Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! He should not have said what he did. It is very apparent. I would suggest the following. There are so many inconsistencies in our vast community that really require some attention that I am confused as to why this is attracting so much attention. Please look at current lyrics to music and dialogue and decide if multiple offenses are not delivered on radio and CD on an hourly basis with regard to race and/or ethnic ideals. It is an outrage. What he said was wrong. His stage is minimal with respect to the millions and millions of dollars spent to produce, direct and deliver language and ideas which are far more offensive then anything he said. If you don't believe me please, listen to other radio stations or purchase the top ten music titles of our times and tell me that his "offense", as a comedian, come close to the "building blocks" of social undersatanding we would have our youth listen to today and seemingly grant immunity.

I think we all need to lighten up. If you watch Imus very much at all you can hear him say something ridiculos nearly everyday. Sometimes its against blacks, sometimes whites, sometimes Latino and few of his comments are to be taken litterly.
The problem comes in when he becomes a real news person and has famous political guests on his show and they come from both parties and that seems to be mostly for real.
I can remember when Imus was Master of Cermonies back in the Clinton years at a party or some function where the Clintons were present and most of his dialogue was about Whitewater, some laughed some sat stone faced and some were shocked that he would say such things in front of the President and First Lady, while it was still a big news item.
I just think that it shows that Mr. Imus is not the best judgement of off the cuff remarkss and thinks he is funny at times when he is dealing with too serious of a stiuation.
I would suggest that IF MSNBC decides to resume his show that it be on a delayed basis so when stupid comments are made that they can be deleted, and he will at some time in the future make other gaffes. But I do not feel that he should be banned for it and it should be taken in the spirit it was made.

This slap on the wrist means nothing yet.
Now that Imus has refused to resign, the ball is totally in the court of CBS (radio) and NBC (TV). If he comes back from a suspension, then it means that CBS and NBC are hiring a known racist.
If he does come back, the outcry will be twice as loud as anything you've heard so far (at least it will at http://www.beatvisitor.com )

To all the people whining about free speech-
Free Speech has no bearing in decisions made by privately owned and operated companies.
If it were some kind of governmental entity banning/removing him then there would be a huge problem, and I'd agree with you.
But CBS and MSNBC have the right to censor whatever they want on their own respective networks.
This is NOT a First Amendment issue. He has the right to say it, in fact he DID say it. He hasn't lost any of his rights, he's just lost respect.

Would his comments been excusable had he called the players of another universities team, consisting of primarily white females, "blow-job giving bithches!" ? If it isn't then his comment about these African-American athelets is not acceptable. All the prior comments about freedon of speech, just note that thousands of African-American females fight daily for his right to speak freely. He should show some respect for everyone if not for anything else for the fact that some so called nappy headed people are protecting him at this very moment! No one needs to lighten up, he needs to shut up! He lacks respect and the network needs to teach him a lesson and demonstrate that they do not agree wiht his comments. No American should have to accept being insulted. Would he refer to his wife in a similar manner?

Black mucicians, rappers, hip hoppers, whatever you want to call them refer to women as ho's, bitches, booties, more filth than I care to try to remember, so why does the African-American population go off the wall when I white man does basically the same thing. Take a look at the way you refer to your own race before you go demanding someone elses job. It's my opinion that Al Sharpton and "his people" need to step back and take a look....get the crack dealers and gangters off the streets, selling dope and shooting innocent people and then start worrying about in the moment comments made by "a white guy"

MDS.....Pretty sure they didn't suspend him because he's doing a charity show on Thursday and Friday this week. That's why the suspension starts on Monday.
Smooth move from CBS....but a pretty blatant PR trick.

I THINK I LIVE IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE. IMUS IS IMUS AND KNOCKS EVERYONE. LIKE HIM OR NOT--THAT IS WHAT HE DOES.. RACIST MY TOE. IF THEY WERE WHITE, HE WOULD HAVE SAID' DUMB BLOND HO. I WORKED FOR CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE DEEP SOUTH IN THE 50'S. FOR WHAT I WONDER TODAY. SO EVERY NONSENSICAL COMMENT WOULD BE CALLED RACISM. NONSENSE. AND WHO CARES WHAT THE SHARPTON CRIMINAL THINKS. TALKING TO HIM WAS CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT FOR IMUS OR ANYONE.

Let me sum it all up by saying this: he was wrong and he should be fired. It doesn't matter what race he is. It doesn't matter what race the women's basketball team is. Any racially tinged comment(be it from a white, pink, yellow, brown, black, orange or blue person) should not be tolerated. Racism is one of the ugly things that holds our country down.

The most sickening part of this was Jessie F-king Jackson picketing outside to have Imus fired. Hey Rev, at least Imus has a job. Near as I can tell, you make money by hate-breeding speeches and lawsuits. Why don't you just go away, you phony POS. And Rev Al is almost as bad, but at least he seems to try to make things better, most of the time.
If Imus gets fired, he'll just go to sat. radio anyway. I don't see the reason for all his apologies. Just apologize to the Rutgers team, everyone else can shut the hell up.

Why pick on Don Imus? Actions should speak louder than words. This is a great American whom I respect and admire for what he does, not what he says (although I enjoy what he says.) His humor has gotten me through many difficult times, by distracting me from reality. For that, I will be forever greatful. People who know me cannot believe that I am obsessed with IMUS IN THE MORNING, because I am so different than Don. I just wish I were more like him! Please don't take him away from the millions of people who appreciate him as a great humanitarian. I am a Realtor in Savannah, Georgia who will support Don Imus, the person, forever.

Just another prime example of the uneven playing field Whites have to deal with. Blacks call their women "Ho,s" at every jr high, high school and college campus in the land. Is (who does he work for) Al Sharpton object to the black males doing this? Perhaps Sharpton, if he can understand the words, listen to the black rap and bee-bop music. Sharpton has no personal platcorm from which to work so he does his best to imulate J Jackson by making a rather handsome income from someone else`s persieved woes. No big deal here.
