Don Imus apologized again on his radio show this morning for calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos," and he agreed to appear on Al Sharpton's radio show to discuss the incident. Sharpton, meanwhile, denounced Imus's comments as "diabolical" and "racist."Imus also hinted that he plans changes for his radio show, indicating that he'll curtail his practice of making people the butts of his jokes based on their race, sex, sexual orientation and other traits:
"Because the climate on this program has been what it's been for 30 years doesn't mean it's going to be what it's been for the next five years or whatever," Imus said.
I find it hard to believe Imus can hold himself to that, though. Imus has been in the radio business for nearly four decades, and he's gotten to where he is in the business by bumping up against -- and sometimes crossing -- the bounds of good taste. As Pro Football Talk has noted, the listeners who have made Imus so successful will stop listening if he isn't the same Imus they've always enjoyed so much.
UPDATE: Watch Imus apologize on his own show and his appearance on Al Sharpton's show.

One would have to be an ardent listener of Don Imus over the years to know that his shtick is to be shocking and not to take him seriously; being boorish is part of his routine.
This is not an excuse for going over the line, spewing hate, provided we know that hate is the intent. Howard Stern made fun of the Blessed Virgin, and certain shock jocks encouraged simulated sex by listeners in St Patrick’s Cathedral, the latter I’m sure done to belittle religion by the non religious. There are times when the attempt to be outlandish goes too far, but we should assess the participant’s motivatation and ask if it’s really hate? In the case of Don Imus, he has done too much for all children to say that he hates some “types.” He was disappointed the Rutgers women’s basketball team lost the final, so he made fun of them the way school children make fun of one another, and did so by picking up on an antiquated stereotype, adding the girls were “ho’s” when we know this to be outrageous because he doesn’t even know them!
The humor is tiring and childish. I no longer listen to his program because it becomes mundane and monotonous, having to listen to “he looks like he’s dead,” “he can’t be bothered with anyone,” and “he’s self centered.” Unfortunately, due to his schizophrenic program, I miss out on fine interviews with many notable politicians and authors. It’s at a time when someone says “let’s get serious,” and they conduct serious conversation. That’s in us all.
What’s outrageous is the call for Imus’ economic execution by Al Sharpton, former drug mule for James Brown and convicted tax felon, who has had an open invitation to speak on Imus’ show these past two decades. Unlike Imus, Sharpton is in a position where what he says needs to be taken seriously. He has been an irritant, and has done more over the years to harm racial relations rather than cultivate our similarities. Jesse Jackson, in a moment of reconciliation, confessed to spitting in a white person’s food when he was younger, and we gladly accepted and forgave (even the people from hymietown!), noting the anger he felt, even though his reaction was just as wrong as the injustice he experienced. He did not resign his ministry or withdraw from his Presidential aspiration. Happily these days he is more focused on his marital fidelity, teaching African American teenagers the harm of using the “N” word, and learning not to judge (condemn) other people.
If one listens to Joan Rivers, or Don Rickles, we would come away with the feeling that they dislike everyone. Ms. Rivers goes as far as to make fun of her own daughter, Melissa. Various African American sitcoms on UPN-9 make light of “whites,” along with blacks, Asians et al; “you take it from where it comes.”
We need to segregate the words from the actions. This does not condone words which can be equally harmful, as long as we analyze the intent and motivation of the people talking. Imus, a comedian, was stupid and apologized for a joke in bad taste that went too far. Has Al Sharpton, one time Presidential candidate and not considered a comedian, ever apologized to Steven Bigones for the Tawana Brawley fraud? Repercussions there were real and serious.
Imus’ actions are to use his financial blessings and celebrity to work near miracles for parents who lost their children to SIDS, and for the terminally ill “Make a Wish” children, which is beyond words. It is also important to note that the one person that Imus berates and ridicules the most and the harshest, is he.
Now I will go back to viewing the movie “White Men Can’t Jump.” I’m told to tolerate this title and not be offended by it because it’s just humor.

While Mr Imus made some terrible remarks, he chose a terrible forum to make up for them. While Mr.Sharpton certainly is a charismatic fellow, his reputation proceeds. He won't give up this issue and will profit while he waits for the next issue or comment to come along.I remember the Tawana(possibly misspelled)Brawly incident quite well and never forgot my introduction to Mr.Sharpton.On a wholly seperate note does anyone remember the huge protest that occured after the so-called Duke rape case?I wonder if those people who were so visibly upset will come out in the same numbers to apologize if those boys get exonerated.....Highly unlikely.

imus, while often in questionable taste, has a heart of gold. anyone who would question his effort to help the downtrodden hasn't listened to him carefully enough. the man is a saint. and as long as the issue is firing, the one we need to get rid of is bush, not imus.

When I first listened to the Imus show, I too thought it racist. After really understanding the style of the show
(shock) I like it. His deeds should be considered before people make a judgement on him.
I'm tired of Al Sharpton and Jesse speaking for me, because to me, they are also "shock jocks"
I never thought I would find myself defending this man ( Imus) and he sounds like he can do that pretty
well himself. Leave this man alone. look inward for the true racists. Signed: Rock

Some of you may be old enough to remember uncle DON.
He was a famous radio personality who had a children audience.. Not realizing his mike was open,,he closed the show saying to his program director: "That should hold the little bastards." That was the LAST TIME he was heard on radio.. It's curious that he and Imus have the same first name!

AL Sharpton was the biggest drug mule to james Brown and on that alone he shut his big fat mouth. Not to mention we thank Al for the LA Riots and his efforts in the fictious rap case of the white officers that he fueled. He is a money hungery whore and should be locked up for Tax felonys. Imus made a mistake and apologized for it, there is no money to be made here Sharpton beat it.

Where's my copy of Ivory Magazine?
Oh that's right, that name would be offensive to some so therefore it does not exist.
What channel is the White Entertainment Network?

The double standard here is as obvious as it is pathetic.
The "Reverend" is once again grand-standing. Must be because his congregations collections are in the red and he wants to get that back into the black.
( oops! Can I type that? )

I have also watched Don Imus for years. I will agree that some of the comments of his crew are sexist. I have yet until last Wednesday to hear a racist remark. I was appalled at his remark. This is a new century and racism has to blotted out. Having said that, I think we have to balance his awful remark with the good work he and his wife have done with children who have cancer, and his help for the soldiers who have been maimed in this senseless war. Thank you for listening.

So Al wants Imus fired for raciest comments. This is the same person who led all the blacks in an uproar over the duke lacross players. Since then that case has completely fallen apart. It seems in this country we a a double standard, black people can say whatever they want about white people but white people have to walk on tip toes about everything. The naacp is constantly putting their nose in all the wrong places remember Rodney King. Sure lets show the police beating a black man and leave out the part where he led a high speed chase all whacked out on PCP. Hey America wake up, ignore these morans and eventually they will go away. The credantials of these black men should have been tarnished enough by now that we should smell crap every time they open their mouths. Jessie Jackson and his illegitamate children on down the line. WHAT CLOUT DO THEY HAVE ANYMORE. We bash the Bush and Chaney all the time because of them misleading us. So scew em all lets move on.

I do not agree ever with anything that Al Sharpton says. He's a racist and he should be admonished constantly for all the divisiveness he causes. He's nothing but an opportunist.HE CAUSES MORE PROBLEMS THAN HE'S WORTH!I really think Al Sharpton deserves no ones respect after all the bad he has done. If I had done the bad things he's done I would not be in the public eye. I would have felt too much remorse and embarrassment for ruining peoples lives and that's what Sharpton did! He's a nightmare. What Imus said was unkind, hurtful and racist, but I hardly think those accomplised women at Rutgers should or would take it to heart. The Imus show, of which I am a 30 minute a day listener on my way to work is a radio show based a their groups banter. I personally can't stand their politics but the banter is entertaining on the morning ride to work. Al Sharpton has yet again tried to make a mountain out of a molehill and by doing this he creates more bias and bad feelings than anything Imus said. At least Imus and his family bring joy and hope to very sick children. His humor may be offensive at times, but the good that he does is far greater, regardless of color or religion, than anything Al Sharpton has ever done!!!!!!!!!!

Imus apologized at length this morning and he did it with humility and grace. His show is one of a kind and Imus takes the kind of risks that few would dare. He and his AM guests push the freedom of speech envelope and it's a wonderful thing in this climate of political repression. He made a mistake and he has the courage to reach out to those he offended.
Where's the outrage toward some of the black Rap entertainers who routinely degrade black women in their songs and performances? Does it make it right because black men and women choose to represent 'themselves' in this manner?

Don Imus does not owe anybody an apology. He has no demeaned the basket ball team anymore than he has other groups. It is strange that every group on Earth can take it, except for Black folks. Al Sharpton and other civil rights leaders need to find regular jobs. They are making a mountain out of a mole hill, as this creates work for them to do.
