... and that's coming from a Gator fan.Oden was stunningly good in Ohio State's 84-75 loss to the defending national champions.
25 points? 12 rebounds? 4 blocks?
Against one of the greatest teams in the history of college basketball, that's a pretty damn fine exclamation point to a one-year college career which most believe just ended on Monday night.
Oden's individual plays were simply outstanding. The Big Fella's rejections were incredible: he cleanly took a two-handed dunk right out of Corey Brewer's hands. He was unstoppable in the post; Al Horford's hands flapped vainly around the air, just 2 inches below that treasured leather, unable to do anything to stop Oden's advance. Any one-on-one matchup with Oden usually resulted in giving the seven footer a good look at the basket, and more often than not, points for the Bucks. Clearly, standing alone among Florida's three talented bigs, Oden was the best post player on the court. And for once, I agreed with Billy Packer when he suggested that Oden be named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player despite being a member of the losing team. Corey Brewer won that honor, and deservedly so given his performance of the past few games, but Oden's broad shoulders brought Ohio State's young cast to the brink of greatness.
Of course, Oden alone couldn't carry this team. Oden's greatness wasn't mirrored by his accompanying cast in this particular game, but that had a lot to do with Florida's defense. In fact, I'd go so far as to say Florida was the most defensively dominating team in the tournament. At the end of the day, most post-mortem writeups of this game will probably chime in agreement that Florida was simply too good to beat. Their twin back-to-back national championships bookend a football BCS title, won just a few months ago, also at Ohio State's expense.
I think it's safe to say that after being swept, Ohio State has now had enough of the Gators. But this Gator can't get enough of Greg Oden's magnificent play, which was really the highlight of this game despite Florida's command of the match from the word go.
Congratulations to the Florida Gators and Greg Oden, both of whom made the 2007 college basketball season a memorable, special celebration of the sport we all love.

It is quite obvious to me that Ohio State is not in the same league as Florida. I mean they lost by 26 points to this same Gator team back in Dec. Hell they could not even beat the Gators in the BCS game back in Jan. Which means the Florida Gators have won not one not two but three national championships in a calender year. one football championship and two basketball championships pretty phenominal feat huh.

Anyway, regarding this post, as a Gators fan, I somewhat agree. He really did put on a performance against a really good team with 3-4 superb big guys. But I also have to acknowledge that Brewer deserves it because he did what he always does -- stuffed the stat sheet and helped his team to a win, a championship win, no less.

Oden is what, 7 ft 2 inches? He looks like he's 25. Yeah, his fake birth certificate his mom carries around makes him '18.' Whatever. If I were 7 2 I could have done the same.

It's about time he had a great game against some good frontcourt competition, but still not one of Florida's big guys is going to play any more than a power forward in the pros. When he did play agianst a taller man, in Hibbert, he was out-played when they were in the game together. The only reason he had a big game today is because Brewer and the Gators backourt denied Conley and company, the real MVP's of OSU this year. Beacause, they were denied the big guy for the first time in a long time, maybe all season, had to come up with a big game. But as his season and tournament stats indidcate, he is not ready to turn pro. He will get eaten up by NBA big guys, which he has hardly had to face all year. Durant is a much different story, at 6-9, he can play big guard/small forward and progress as his body develops. He already can play inside and out, and his shooting and athletic range is limitless. Oden on the other hand had one big game were he carried his team, and was able to dominate without getting into foul trouble. Did Patrick Ewing, Hakeme, Shaq, Kareem, Walton, Wilt, and Russell just have one dominating College game before they went to the pros. Centers are a different breed. He had a great game, and he FINALLY stepped up when his teamates couldn't and they still lost. Why did they lose? The same reason why Florida beat UCLA. Corey Brewer denied what was thought to be the best backcourt in the country in Collison and Affalo. And Corey Brewer did the same thing to Ohio State. That is why he got and deserved M.O.P. Oden had one great game and a so/so game against Georgetown. And he should stay in school. I hope he can turn down the millions and wait another year. If he does, Oden can look and see what 3 Gators did by turning down the big bucks. They became better players/persons, and got to cut down the nets again. Now, they are worth even more money. Hopefully, Oden has looked at this lesson and will WAIT ONE MORE YEAR.

Calling Florida "one of the greatest teams in the history of college basketball" is a joke. We are in an age where the best college players such as Oden rarely stay past their sophomore years. The years of "great" college teams is over.

one multi-million contract in the hand is worth hoping to get better in the future. Get it while you can Oden, you can get your doctorate in the pros with a mega million dollar contract.

How could you bash Oden in his play against Hibbert?
He got a couple of cheap quick fouls and played 3 minutes in the first half with no attempted shots. In the second half he had 13 points 9 rebounds 1 block 1 steal in a total of 20 mins in that game. I can assure you that if he hadn't been in foul trouble he would have been able to play a more aggresive defense against Hibbert but he was smart and was able to stay in the game the second half. As far as last night how can you even attempt to knock him? He played 38 mins against 4 very solid big guys that were fresh throughout the game and still managed the game he did. I dont care who you are you have to give him some praise and as an overall performance he deserved the MOP. Now I agree that he should most defineately stay at least one more year in the college and fine tune his post defense and conditioning. Especially considering hes only 18 turning 19 this year. Also I am from Massachusetts so dont pull the your from Ohio crap give me some real facts in a rebuttle.

Hell yeah he deserves MOP Oden played an outstanding game..He blocked shots, he got points he didn't get into foul trouble and he played a lot of mins. what more do you want!!!! No one player can win any game by themselves...His presence was valuable in any game he played even if he didn't get the points. I do think he should play at least one more year just to develop his skills more and really try to understand the game more. As far as someone saying the Florida players gave up the big money last year, well they should have cause they weren't NBA talent then and they aren't now. I will make a bet with anyone that neither one of those Florida players will be top players in the NBA. They are good on the college level and that's it. C'mon look at other players that people said were great in college and when they went to the NBA it was downhill. I didn't see anything GREAT that stood out last night with the Florida players. Yes they work well together at that level but now put them with faster and stronger men and see what happens. Let's talk about the forward, who can Noah or Florida's other fowards go against in the NBA? Ok now let's talk about the gaurds who will Corey or Green be competeive against? Humphrey may do well with a solid screen, the boy can shoot a 3.

Ferguson, nicely done. And classy to boot.
I agree Oden deserved the award because of the body of work for both FF games. He only played 20 minutes against G-Town but he dominated those 20 minutes. Last night he dominated for 38 minutes against the best front line assembled in years. If Ohio State won last night, we wouldn't be having this conversation, but they didn't. To the victors go the spoils, I guess. BTW, it's very curious to me how Brewer won it shooting 4-14. Goodness...
Man, I am glad we are done with college sports for awhile. I am tired of getting pounded by Florida! :)
Hope to you see you again next year Ferguson. Been fun.

i definitely do not agree...let's not forget that the mop goes to the most outstanding player for BOTH games in the final four. no way that goes to oden.
brewer was lights out against ucla and filled the stat sheet again in the final.
in fact, i don't think he's even next in line...i think that would be horford who had 18 and 12 in the final to go along with 17 rebounds in the game before. and, then , let's not forget about humphrey's amazing three point shots in those 2 games.
either way, i don't think he deserved it. did he play well? you bet. but let's not overlook the fact that he got an awful lot of help last night. yes, he stayed on the court but the calling was horrible. uf's bigs picked up like 15 total fouls with the majority going against oden and the majority of those being the ticky-tack variety--which oden was doing the EXACT same thing on the other end of the court and NOT being called for it.
maybe i'm a conspiracy theorist and didn't even know it but it seemed really strange to me that, before the game the big thing was, "could oden stay on the court?" well, him being the "next big thing" and all...of course, let's do our best to keep him on the floor and showcase his talents and then let's have the cbs announcers constantly talk about him (along with showing a graphic of his current stats EACH time he scored). you would have thought ohio state was leading the entire game if you had only listened to the announcers. pitiful job.

Gator Fan Here,
To start...Oden was frickin unbelievable. No one, in 2 yrs, has handled horford like he did last night. I do agree though that the refs were smoking crack before the game and at half time and cbs was their dealer. If you didn't see anything GREAT about florida, then you probably should have watched the National Frickin Championship last night!!!! And if you did, then you obviously don't know anything about college basketball. If Florida isn't great, then the rest of the teams in the country must completely suck and Oden was mediocre last night. Also, Brewer is a mismatch at any level of basketball and he will prove it...hopefully in two yrs. Believe Gator fans...dreams can come true....oh wait....they already have, but they can still keep coming true.
