The reports all day have been that Michigan has been talking, then negotiating with John Beilein to leave West Virginia for Ann Arbor. It looks like it has finally happened. CBS Sportsline is reporting that Beilein has accepted the offer and a news conference will take place within 48 hours. This means that Michigan will be paying West Virginia about $2.5 million dollars for the Beilein buyout -- whether directly or via Beilein. That will be on top of whatever else Beilein will receive as an annual salary.
Looks like the Wolverines might be getting serious about basketball. You don't think that team to the south that is playing in the NCAA Tournament Championship tonight may have had added a little spur to upgrade?

Well now. U of M is spending $2.5M in penalties, just to hire a basketball coach! Next time I hear that the University needs more funding from us taxpayers, I think I will be a bit less sympathetic.

No Friggin-you must be joking!!! With the different schools trying to lure our coaches away, it only proves how great we really are in West Virginia. I don' know where you are from, but we have proven ourselves. It is about time that the rest of the nation realizes that!!!

Actually, The University of Michigan athletic department(and most major athletic departments) is self-sufficient, requiring no money from the State. As a citizen, you have a right through FOIA to read all financial documentation since the University is within public domain. (www.umich.edu) So while the athletic department does not receive state money, the university still receives royalties on any Michigan paraphernalia. You might want to read up on that before complaining about your tax "burden".

I have moved to WV about 3 years ago and really enjoyed watching WVU play basketball though I can not say they are my team. The coaches system works well in Morgantown, WV where he brings in players who pass under the scope of big programs. This allows him to find players and pick and choose the ones that fit his unselfish coaching style. I fear that Michigan will not be the same, it is a lot easier to convince a player to go to ann arbor than morgantown, WV.
This reminds me alot of the birmingham news reports. So we will wait to see what happens. 2.5 million dollar signing bonus could really bring in a good coach I think.

Gee, sounds like the second comment came from a Pitt or Maryland fan...those folks seem real sensitive about WVU lately.

Personally, I would have preferred Tom Lickliter to become Michigan's head coach. Beilein is a good coach, but all of his Division I jobs have been in the east. Lickliter, having been at Butler, is probably has a better perspective on recruiting in the Midwest.
It will be interestig to see which of the three Big 10 schools with new coaches has the most improvement.

Now, now .Look at Nick Saben... Michigan State to LSU to where? Different sport same situation. Perhaps the attention should go to Lloyd Carr. I'd replace Carr first! He will NEVER win all the marbles for Michigan!!!!

Yo Doug, Lloyd Carr WON all the marbles in 1997 with Michigan. So I guess you really don't know what your talking about.
Maybe you should only post accurate info.

ncaa needs to regulate the moneys and "spiffs" paid to coaches the way it does to players. coaches should not be sold to the highest bidder, after all this is collage and they are teachers of the sport. a big time school should not be able to BUY a coach from a smaller school.

Michigan is a football school. Any b-ball success is just a by-product of this. It will be difficult in this situation. Just ask the Steve Alfords and the various Penn St. coaches about this

Um, Doug DeVries, Carr already won a National Championship in Michigan in 1997, so that blows a big hole through your comment. Better luck next time retard.

Yo, Steve. Michigan had to SHARE all those marbles in 1997. They didn't win ALL the marbles, they won half of them. Please don't fire Lloyd, he's the best assistant coach we've had at tOSU.

Beilien is crazy if he thinks Michigan has the ability to win the National Campionship, the Wolverines lost in the second round of the NIT.WVU dominated the NIT. Michigan just isn't meant to have a basketball team. If anyone wants to leave the colliseum they are retared, I would live there if I could. John shouldn't of backed out after bringing in such a great freshman class. I guarantee if WVU played Michigan 50 times WVU would win them all. Michigan is so bad no one can help. We will just show Beilein when were National Champions and his team has been watching the whole tournament on TV. Our stars[Butler, Nichols, and Smalligan]versus there star [Ron Coleman?], if ron can even dribble he'll be the team star. If Beilein wants to go to Michigan then I hope they don't win a game[they probably won't unless they play a team like slppery rock.WVU killed slippery rock. WVU will have a tougher non- confrence schedule and will be ranked #1 in the NCAA Tournament.
P.S. Stick to football Michigan because WVU's girls could beat your basketball team.

What a trader. This man lets down the school, his players, and tarnishes his reputation to take a job with MICHIGAN? What are the true benefits of this move? The coaches, competition, and prestige of the Big East certainly outwieghs that of the Big Ten, a conference overrated on a yearly basis for performance from years ago. Example: Wisconsin and Ohio State ( Who sold out to take Greg Oden when they knew he would only stick around for 1 year. And he WILL stick around for only 1 year.) Wake up, Coach.

Thank you Michigan, and as usual West Virginia comes out on top again. When you guys fire Beilein send him to K-State. Michigan will soon notice that Beilein has no recruiting skills, he has no more sons to bring to Michigan, but any good Coach would have played Frank Young a lot more then Beilein son. Bye Beilein, don't let the outhouse door hit you where you think the best......

U of M got a good coach, but he'll get bored and leave again. He doesn't stay any place more than a handful of years - 5, 6, 8 - then depart. He really, really wanted to leave to go to either Indiana or NC State after last season, but both schools balked at the buy out. Don't worry, Wolverine fans, he'll break your hearts, too, and use you as a stepping stone for bigger and better places.
