Buckeyes basketball coach Thad Matta committed one of the most disgusting acts I've ever seen a coach commit (and I've watched lots of Bob Knight games) during Sunday's Ohio State-Wisconsin game. There's no visual evidence of it online yet (if you've got some, leave a link in the comments), but here's how FoxSports.com columnist Jeff Gordon describes it:Ohio State coach Thad Matta sent his chewing gum flying onto the court during one of his theatrical outbursts. Then he scooped up the gum and put it back in his mouth.(It seems the Big Ten has the five-second rule, too.)
Yes, Matta yelled something, his gum came out of his mouth and onto the floor, he picked his gum up, and he nonchalantly put it back into his mouth. I don't know if he thought no one would notice, but the CBS cameras caught it, and believe me, people noticed. MJD noticed at Deadspin. Tom Keegan noticed at KUSports.com. Memphis Bengal noticed at Sports Frog. Now Matta has to win the national championship. That's pretty much the only way his 2006-07 season will be remembered for anything other than gum-gate.

I saw it and was repulsed. Aren't there team managers to just take that from him?

Why can't Americans cross the border and drink the water, though local folks have no problems with it? Because our obsession with germs and fanatical cleanliness has turned us into such wimps we cant take it. And Moms are insisting that just leaving a standard bar of soap near the bathroom sink isn't enough for their kids these days. No, they have to use ever-strenghtening bacterial soap -- the unintended outcome, documented by numerous medical and biological experts, is setting in motion evolutionary processes that create stronger bacteria increased immunity. The bugs fight back, following inherent survival instincts to get bet more buff and tuff. We're making Super Germs. The gum didn't drop out of his mouth and land in dog poo or a spitty snotwad; Of course, only inconsiderte slobs don't wash their hands after going to the Can. But the coach just wanted his gum back and it was only on the floor for a few seconds. He had s game to worry about and the gum probably helps him focus. What's the big deal? Get tough, America!

When I watched the video, it kind of looked like he LOST the gum from his mouth rather than spitting it out. Although I would never put it back in my mouth, his 'reaction' serves to the intensity of the game.

People that find it so repulsive outta lighten up a bit. Coach Matta is showing his real character, laughing at himself and showing he's pretty doggone normal. Obviously a great guy and no wonder his players like him so. Workin' on my 3 pointer in hopes he knocks on my door some day.

It's funny that the news would highlight this and let it pass when a dhimmi congress was caught on camera not only picking his nose but eating the results. Na, no bias in reporting these days.

Big deal, babies do it all the time, not chewing gum, of course, they're not clever enough to keep it where it belongs. If he, the coach, gets sick, the school will take care of any charge old sawbones, might submit. This is a good example of not being able to do anything on the sly ... cameras, cameras, etc.

I'm sorry but we have all put worse things in our mouths. Truthfully the ball court is probablly cleaner than most of our kitchen floors.
Not to be gross or anything but to me it is worse to see someone pick their nose and eat it, you know the hairs serve as a filter to stop germs, dust, pollens etc. You are eating something that you have no idea where or what is caught in your filter. Atleast his went from his mouth to his mouth.
I had a 6th grade math teacher who would pick his nose sometimes with a pencil eraser and then proceded
to rub them (cook) on the steam raditator heater in the class room. With that being stated, cut the man a break, it was a knee jerk reaction, and he mind was were it was supposed to be ---on his job----.
Undoubtedly it is something he will have to laugh at all of the jokes till the day he dies and then some.
But don't we all have something that our friends and family can dog us on forever. His is just now basically world wide.
So those of us who are saying "disgusting" think all the way through your mental filing cabinet and I am sure you will find something just as gross in there.

The media must be really hard up. If his teeth fell out and he put them back in, would it be disgusting, or would it be on funniest home videos? Give the guy a break, he,s being exploited.

If you have nothing better to do than critisize that poor man for chewing gum that fell on the floor then I feel sorry for you. Honestly a little dirt doesnt hurt thats why there are so many flus and diseases today because we are all too clean. Did we use antibacterial hand cleaners when we were children, no thats why we are still here!!!
